The Pussification of America

No photos or art work today, just a straight up rant…..

Something has been irking me lately and it’s exactly what I coin “The Pussification of America.”
On the flip side, I’m sure this article will get me in a lot of heat, mainly by those who are contributing to the weakness.

There is a rare breed of people out there who are also ranting about this and will understand where I am coming from, regardless of being male or female. I have a funny feeling it’s on the minds of many and I do not stand alone.

Not sure what’s going on in other countries, but in the states we’ve got one too many strained hamstrings, too much “I’m tired”, too much “I just gotta get my mind into it” B.S. floating around.

Weak Bodies have become common place and the age range is REALLY starting to stretch. Did you ever think there would come a day when a 6 year old would say he / she doesn’t want to play? Did you ever think that running 2 minutes would exhaust someone? I NEVER imagined such days would come, but they have come and they are HERE.

Physical Education is getting crushed in the states, especially in the middle and high school level where one too many PE Teachers (I should not even call them Physical Education teachers) are allowing students the option to walk on the track and consider this exercise.

If the teacher is allowed to describe such slow movement as “walking”, which is actually slower than a 8 month old baby crawling, then guess who allowed this lackluster effort to be accepted as “Physical Education”? Look at the top. The Administration gave the OK to allow the teachers to give options for those who are motivated to move and for those who are unmotivated to move.
Guess what happens to the Teacher or Athletic Coach for creating a challenging Physical Education environment? He / She will be reprimanded by the Administration.

Challenge the students enough (i.e. make them work outside their comfort zone) and the student tells Mommy & Daddy he doesn’t like you. Next in line? Mommy and Daddy call the school and complain about the teacher and get little Johnny transferred into a different class.

Lesson learned? Push beyond mediocrity and you get reprimanded or perhaps fired. My High School Wrestling Coach took a position at a different high school this past season and in the first week nearly 10 kids quit.

Maybe they said he was too mean, but the translation, which is clear as day, is that it was too hard. These kids will fit perfectly fine into the gyms that have dumbbells no heavier than 50 lbs and 95% of the exercises allow them to sit down, lie down or push and pull on a time wasting machine.

Then again, these kids will NOT be entering any gym as they have proven they are against hard work, or any work at all for that matter.

Teachers and Coaches are becoming the enemy to those who are expected to work hard or earn their way on to the starting line up. Many Administrators allow the parents to complain or cry about the required work of their child and then the Coach is reprimanded and asked to lessen the expectations.
This sends the WRONG message and a poor lesson is learned. Complain enough and you get your way is what they learn.

What happens when they grow up and become part of a large company / business, or even a small company / business?
Does the conversation now look like this:
Employee: “Hey Boss, I don’t really like to work, can I take it nice and easy today, tomorrow and the rest of the year?”

Boss: “Oh sure, as long as you’re doing just enough to get by we should be good.”

For the parents and administrators who are supporting the requirement of hard work, dedication commitment and consistency I salute you and thank you.
For the parents who are interfering because they have become experts at the sport by watching the sport and never having participated in the actual sport, you are screwing up the future of this country.

This shit is spiraling out of control and if you try to become part of the solution your co workers and the Administration will hate you for trying to rock the boat.  For those supporting the new path of mediocrity, you are screwing things up across the country now AND for the future.

By the way, “rocking the boat” means you are trying to be progressive and stretch beyond the poor standards that have been set so low and are being accepted. Don’t rock the boat, because then you’ll be forcing other people to do that strange thing called WORK!

Take a look at what society has done to the large number of gyms popping up around the states. Dumbbells are not allowed heavier than 50 lbs and how dare you grunt or use chalk or break a sweat because some ridiculous alarm will go off and you will be removed from the gym. This sounds like insanity to me.

The person who created such a philosophy can not truly go to sleep at night knowing he has done wrong for so many and is now creating a society of straight up weaklings.
Punishment for hard work, that’s the lesson here.
Little do “They” know, that being removed from such a lame ass gym, and I dare stretch my vocabulary and call such a place a “gym”, this is the BEST gift one can get from these places. Removal from a place that supports mediocrity and lackluster effort. In a nut shell, they want you to be weak.

Now this individual will have to hide in his basement, garage or backyard with a 300 lb weight set pieced together from E Bay or Craigs List. He has no bench, no leg extension, no squat rack….. just a raw barbell.

Boo Hoo.

Thank You, Sir, May I have another!?!?

Do we need to have required military service from age 18-21 as they do in Israel and other countries? This could be the trick we need and the younger generation can no longer tell you, “I’m not going to school yet until I figure out what I wanna do.”

Response: No problem, Dude, you’re going to the Army so you have the next 3 years to learn discipline, responsibility, accountability AND your future aspirations.

My Grandfather was in the Russian Army, then the Polish Army and then the Israeli Army. No wonder why he was so damn tough. He never owned a car, instead, he rode his bike, walked and chased buses to make his travels.

I remember my Grandfather jogging with my brother and I or riding our bikes over 1 mile to the pool to get us swim lessons where my older brother usually attempted to drown me on a daily basis. After swim lessons we would jog or ride our bikes back home.

He didn’t tell us to take it easy, have a nap, stay inside, it’s too hot outside to play. And mid summer at 1 or 2 PM the heat climbs near 100 degrees.

We played soccer on a cement playground with other kids and falling on the cement was NOT fun. But we got up every time we fell. I still remember the best goalie was playing in his flip flops! I know of elementary schools that have disallowed running during recess due to some kids falling.

The next step is to tell them to crawl….. where do we go after that? Lay down and wait to die? Perhaps Lunch Aides will have taser guns and start zapping kids who dare to run.

This teaches the young kids to NOT get up after they fall down. This lesson carries over in life. Forever. The kids grow up and become adults, who fear trying new things or taking adventures and they live a boring, safe life. They view running as evil and they view action as evil.

What happens to these kids as they near the end of high school? Are they motivated to study harder to get into that school they always dreamed of? Or, do they lack the mental toughness to wake up early or stay up late so they can do the necessary studying and make better grades?

5 years later you run into Johnny or Susie and they’re still trying to figure out what to do, and they have a kid, but they’re a single parent because being a parent and married at age 19 isn’t what they wanted to do.

They were never encouraged or taught to handle adversity, accountability, responsibility or decision making skills.

Ask most high school kids why they don’t eat breakfast. They’re answer will more often than not be, “I woke up late.”

Translation: I’m too lazy….. I lack the mental toughness, discipline and dedication to wake up 20 minutes early and make my own breakfast.
Boo Hoo

Let us raise the bar for life. Expectations have dropped so low and excuses are common place for why we can not achieve excellence. We have young kids with high blood pressure and signs of early heart disease. We have varsity athletes who don’t know how to perform push ups and adults who prefer pills over exercise.

Will Physical Education transition into something that challenges all and moves away from accepting mediocrity? Exercise is what my Dad was doing when he was a young kid in Romania, which was the REAL PE back in the early 60’s.

Here’s a taste of the required “Physical Education” my Dad & each kid had to perform before being allowed to organize a game. And YES, they organized games on their OWN!

- Sprints on the track
- Hurdle Jumps on Track
- Throwing of small shot puts
- Gymnastics Movements: tumbling, jumping on, over and off of
objects such as benches, boxes and gymnastics equipment
- Crawling on hands
- Climbing Rope

After the required 30 minutes of challenging activity, a large field was available with various sport activities for the kids to organize on their own. This taught them responsibility AND accountability. Problems with the score? Figure it out on your own and learn to settle differences without calling for a mediator.

Some of the games played were:

- Hand Ball
- Soccer
- Basketball
- Track & Field Races

Some kids continued to practice gymnastics, others ran the hurdles and others rotated to and from the various sports games on their own.

Why has Physical Education become less physical, less challenging and basically less of EVERYTHING compared to 50 years ago? Doesn’t this strike anyone as being strange?

Donald Trump said that all the “feel good” lessons kids have learned through school has produced less business men / women who can succeed in tough times, or succeed at all.

Why do we have Varsity high school athletes unable to perform 10 pull ups, 25 push ups or even
ONE freaking full range of motion bodyweight squat.

I left my teaching job behind, and now, with my own business and my own gym, I can create a TRUE Physical Education program through my gym, also known as Physical Culture.

Our athletes run, jump, climb, use Kettlebells, perform Gymanstics drills, etc.

There comes a time in life where you must stop allowing society to do a shitty job and cheat the health and future life success of our kids. This means you will have to go against the norm and rage against the accepted mediocrity.

I hope it’s not this embarrassing outside the states.

The Art of Brute Strength & Packin’ on Muscle

billy graham powerlifting

Is there truly an ART or a Science to getting strong as hell? Hmmmmm…… Ask Louie Simmons and he will say yes, Jim Wendler will also drop his genius with his 5/3/1 program, allowing him to keep getting stronger….and STRONGER.

But, when in doubt, just lift heavy shit with PROPER technique.

You can do high sets and low reps such as 12 x 2 reps OR…. try Hellish set – rep paramaters like 5 x 10 on movements such as the Barbell Clean & Jerk, Deadlifts, Kettlebell Snatch, etc.

Coach Reeve was always training against the clock when he was a competitive wrestler and a college wrestling coach, and, he still does it today with the Football players of Wake Forest.

Not only does this style of training build serious strength and dense muscle, but also develop immense conditioning and mental toughness, something too many people lack nowadays!

kazmaier stone liftingTry This: 2 reps on the minute, every minute for 10 minutes of (Choose Any One Exercise) the log clean & press, tire flip, sandbag shoulder, stone shouldering, deadlift, barbell clean & press….

I’ve done this with athletes using heavy weights if they need to gain weight and fighters, wrestlers and combat athlete who need strength endurance / power endurance.

And by the way, if you’re resting 3 – 5 minutes between sets because your last scientific handbook told you to do so you’re missing the boat.

In the REAL world, when the hell do you get to do 2 reps and rest? Learn to push heavy weights with minimal rest and as I mentioned before, using proper technique.

I’ve seen some dangerous form being used in local gyms and even by popular web sites on the internet. It sends the wrong message, and you can’t create a powerful message unless You Lead From the Front.

Time for me to get some rest, the alarm is set for 6:30 AM tomorrow morning. It’s training time. That means heavy weights followed by prowler conditioning.

Check out some footage below.

You may also have noticed less video footage from me. I will get back to the videos, so don;t you worry, BUT, I am zoning out when I train and hate to mess around with a video camera when I am focused on getting STRONGER, FASTER, LEANER & MEANER!

That’s me hitting some thick bar deadlifting and the Prowler Pushing with 9 plates is one of our Freshman Football Beasts, we call him “The Hit Man”.

Peace!

Evolution of Zach Even – Esh: From 110 lbs to 220 lbs

mike mentzerSince beginning training 21 years ago I have gone from somewhere around 110 lbs to 220 and at times I’ve hovered around 228 lbs.

My best weight is somewhere in the 204-208 lb range.

Back when I started, I was 13 years old, it was 2 weeks before 8th grade was over and I would train in my big bro’s room which housed a spin lock barbell and some spin lock dumbbells. Most of our weights were sand filled and I still recall the days of dumbbell benching with sand dropping in my mouth and eyes.

I educated myself mainly through the world of Joe Weider, back in 1989, he ruled it all and finding information outside of his hands was tough.

But…. what REALLY moved me and fired me up was Arnold’s Books, especially the black & white pics of him and his training partners in action.

There was something Very Raw & REAL about these photos, especially the guys who were Built like Brick Shit Houses, dense, thick, rugged muscles and moving BIG weights.

They were definitely part of the Anti Pussification Movement, perhaps they saw the future coming.

But, if I KNEW BETTER, it all would have revolved around the fundamentals and the basics. Back in the day, reading all those magazines, I was brainwashed into thinking I had to do isolation movements like side raises for the shoulders, leg extensions, leg curls, etc.

I trained at the local YMCA, a boat load of gyms throughout NJ, some of which were hardcore, others which were not.

Some of those gyms shut down, they put themselves out of business by trying to be something they were not.

oleksandr kutcherI transitioned to training in the garage of my parents, a super tight space with equipment purchased from classified ads in the local newspaper.

No worries, as some of the strongest athletes in the world, especially outside the USA, train under horrible conditions yet have risen to the top and dominated their respective sports. Atmosphere and basics my friends, these will WIN.

With a low budget I was psyched to see CostCo had a 300 lb barbell set for only $99 Bones…..

Haven’t seen that same barbell set come around again, but, with a 300 lb barbell, a pair of 50 & 100 lb Hex Dumbbells, a utility bench, squat uprights and a flat bench my workouts took on a whole new world, as did my body.

Those dumbbells were great, coming straight outta Newark, NJ where I met some dude at a storage facility who had shut down a small gym.

There ya go, another one bites the dust. You can’t build a kick ass business if you have NO business knowledge or business systems in place.

Heck, running my gym part time, from 4 – 8 PM on Monday – Thursday and Friday we go from 4 – 7 PM, 19 hrs per week, the Gym brings in 6 figures. There is no reason why someone can’t take their business and earn at least a solid part time income doing what they love.

But, then again, training IS the business. You can’t kick ass unless you have the skills in training AND business. So, I ditched all the bodybuilding magazines and my old bodybuilding videos. It was a tough time for me, almost like I was dumping some chick I was in love with, ha ha

Although I was limited with information from what the strongest, biggest dudes did from back in the dave draperGolden Era, I copied whatever I could from them and brought it back to life. Those black and white pics of bodybuilders such as Dave Draper, Casey Viator, Bertil Fox, Arnold, Franco & Zane…. They were always rowing, benching, squatting, deadlifting, chins, dips….

That was The REAL shit!

It made sense to follow suit in my garage when I began rebelling against the Bull Shit information swamping the magazines and the internet.

The garage had low ceilings, so standing overhead work was out of the picture. But, heavy cleans worked those shoulders just fine.

Stones lined up my backyard, so I copied what I remember seeing in those OLD World’s Strongest Man competitions as well as using them for functional movements such as squats, presses, carries, rows and power cleans.

My days of bodybuilding and transitioning to power bodybuilding and now a mix of strongman training, gymnastics / bodyweight workouts, kettlebell training, powerlifting, olympic lifting and more….

I keep my mind open. Open to new ways for getting stronger, bigger, faster, leaner and meaner.

You need to keep your mind open as well. Those who know it all know Nothing. After 21 years I am learning more than ever and also hungrier than ever to learn more and evolve my training system. Our athletes are kicking ass and I’m feelin’ agile, mobile and hostile.

At age 34, I am not slowing down. I will continue to kick ass and will always be hungry. I remember the “older” guys in the gym always telling me one day I would slow down. They told me how they used to be like me. Well, news flash…. I NEVER SLOWED down and only got stronger and hungrier.

I am NOT like they are or were, nor am I like anyone else out there. Don’t let naysayers bring you down. Blaze your own trail and Lead from the Front.

Be Strong.

How to Get Built Like a Brick Shit House

powerlifter steve wilson

Once in a blue moon you come across an athlete or a gym rat who, as some of us may have said, is “Built like a Brick Shit House”.

In my 21 years of getting under the bar, traveling the world and being in countless gyms I have seen my fair share of Dudes who are built like BEASTS.

You know the look I’m talking about, right? It’s that Powerful look, thick, densely built muscles that you AUTOMATICALLY know represent the look of Strength, Power and Might.

There aren’t too many guys like this in globo gyms nowadays because they have all defected to training in basements, garages, warehouses and hidden dungeons that only the world of hardcore lifters know of.

bill pettisMost of today’s problems regarding the pussification of the human race would be solved if gyms stopped sounding off sirens anytime someone dared lift heavy or grunt.

Hard Training has now been outlawed by pansy ass gyms such as Planet Fitness – I am still confused why they don’t understand that it’s OK to train hard and heavy and perform exercises with dumbbells heavier than 50 lbs.

What if a gym was created where there was nothing LIGHTER than 50 lbs and sirens went off and your membership was revoked every time some half assed lifter checked his cell phone or wasn’t training with gut busting intensity?

Now THAT would be a GREAT GYM!

If you want that thick, power look then you need to push the limits and get strong as hell using the following lifts with barbells or dumbbells:

- Squats of all variations: back squat, box squat, front squat, zercher squat

- Power Clean, Hang Clean & High Pulls

- Clean & Press or Push Press

- Barbell / Dumbbell / T Bar Rows

- Bench Press, Floor Press, Incline Press

- Farmer Walks

- Deadlift Variations: Romanian Deadlifts, Trap Bar Deads, Rack Pulls and traditional Deadlifting

You should also make some of your own training tools such as heavy handles for swings which can be loaded up with a bunch of 25 lb plates. Swinging heavy weights is excellent for developing your hips, hamstrings, glutes, low back and upper back.

Let us not forget your ability to dominate movements such as chins, dips and rope climbs. Don’t gain fat and excess body weight if you can’t pull yourself up for double digit reps or perform dips and push up variations for high reps.

Can you run? Fast? Sprints of all types are excellent for leg power and even adding muscle to the legs. I suggest Hill Sprints.

Come to think of it, on weekends, go to an empty parking lot and push your car or truck around with the engine off and geared in neutral.

You need to be with me on this mission to end the pussification of the human race.

Drop a comment below.

Peace!

A Day of Underground Strength Training

Here’s a lil’ taste of my training goin’ down at The Underground Strength Gym, in good ol’ Edison, NJ!

There ya have it, some of my favorite lifts:

Squats: I’ll squat anything and anyway possible. I’ll use a box, no box, with bands, chains, sandbags, kettlebells and thick bars for zercher squats.

Deadlifts: I’ll use a regular bar, thick bar or trap bar. This is the ultimate exercise to develop serious, brute strength and a barn door back!

Bench Press: Using thick bars and all types of specialty barbells, the bench press gets a bad wrap, but it’s only a bad wrap by those who have no clue how to use and perform the bench press properly. And for the record, it doesn’t matter if your sport doesn’t require you to lay on your back and press, if you need strong, powerful pushing muscles, then you should be benching in some form or another unless you have an injury preventing you from benching!

Kettlebell Training: Kettlebells are NOT the magic bullet, BUT, they do require skill and athleticism to use them properly and effectively, and if you want to become a better athlete, they WILL help. The details required to master Kettlebell Training can separate the men from the boys.

Who is willing to focus and stay committed to learning the proper skills and technique, OR, who will quit and give up when frustration sets in as they learn the details of proper Kettlebell training?

sergio lat spread

Bodyweight Training: Pull Ups and all bodyweight pulling movements such as rope climbing and all the different grips you can use for chins and pull ups are a MUST have if you wanna be strong and develop a barn door back.

If you can’t pull your own body then you need to get stronger and lose excess body fat, plain and simple. Master your own Body. Period.

Drop a comment below with your favorite lifts.

Peace.

Upper Body Workout for Breakfast

On most Sunday Mornings I wake up before the entire house starts moving.

I get dressed, brush teeth and head to The Underground.

Sunday morning workouts keep me ahead of the pack, keep my edge and allow me to train and do something extra while the rest of the world is still sleeping.

The Military Press is a GREAT way to start your day, especially on a Sunday morning.

Locking heavy weights overhead forces your entire body to work overtime.

Want REAL “core strength”? Lock heavy weights overhead and you’ll feel your entire body working like a madman (or madwoman :) to stabilize.

This is why you see so many olympic lifters with ripped, thickly developed abs and powerful looking erectors that are as thick as tree trunks.

You’ve seen me take weights from the ground to overhead before Here & Here, but sometimes you can just get under the bar, dumbbell or kettlebells – or any training tool, and just keep locking that bad boy overhead.

The next time you think of sleeping in I suggest you push your mind a lil further, wake up early and throw some heavy shit overhead!

Peace.

And remember….. Lead from the Front!

Underground Strength Inspiration WINNERS!

Holy S**t! The Underground Strength Coach Inspiration Contest BLEW ME AWAY!

And by reading ALL the comments, I can see YOU were also inspired!

I am beyond amazed and inspired by the videos that were made.

I compiled the votes that came through my e mail (which was A LOT!), the Blog comments and the 4 people I had judging and man it was a SERIOUS fight for 1st place between BIg Dan and Chris the BEAST.

There was also some SERIOUS love for the Virginia Beach Beast, Matty Wichlinski. Matt contributed and is already a Expert Panelist at http://UndergroundStrengthCoach.com as did Dominik Feischl from Austria, who is also on the Underground Expert Panel.

These two Beasts already have lifetime membership to Underground and did not need the “awards” to inspire them. They are Strength addicts, as we all are, and is what inspired them to take action. Hells Yea!

So, we decided to make a top 3.

This was calculated by the e mails, Blog comments and the 4 friends I had voting as well.

The fight for 1st place was CLOSE but one man edged out another!

Here are the Top 3 Winners and their videos are below.

1st: Chris “The Beast from the East”

2nd: BIG Dan Gibson

3rd: Matty “The Virginia Beach Beast” Wichlinski

Chris AND Dan are BOTH getting a FREE ride to come to a future Underground Strength Coach Mentorship held at my gym in NJ.

Chris will receive ALL the products listed on The Underground Store Page, BOTH physical and downoadable programs.

More info to come from Matt Wichlinski shortly…… :)

I want to say, before posting the videos, that I am honored and humbled to see the awesome people that have taken part in this event.

Everyone showed awesome inspiration AND a humble demeanor.

Too many people in the fitness industry act like assholes and have a holier than tho attitude and it is refreshing to see awesome guys like yourself.

From here on out and every day forward we gotta continue to pay it forward!

Let’s take another look at The 3 Baddest Mother F**ers……

For The Top 3 BEASTS, please e mail me so we can arrange your prizes.

More to come shortly…

Lead from the Front!

Peace!

Underground Strength Inspiration Contest

Approximately 4 & 1/2 years ago I started Underground Strength Coach.

It was a small collection of articles and videos that all began by filming the workouts I did in garages, back yards and playgrounds with my athletes.

Today, we have thousands of articles and several hundred videos on file, a forum that houses thousands and thousands of workouts ranging from my personal workouts, my athletes workouts, workouts of other coaches and their athletes spanning the entire globe.

I always found strength training to be my savior.

Strength training became a ritual to me, and it was the ONLY way and the ONLY place where I could lose myself and find myself.

I wasn’t the only one who felt this way, as slightly over a year ago we held the First Ever, Underground Strength Coach Inspiration Contest, and we had some seriously inspirational videos come through.

Check out the 2 Videos Below and you’ll see what I mean….

Those 2 videos hit me pretty damn deep.

They choke me up.

I get countless e mails every day with people saying “Thank You”.

I can’t describe in words what it does for me that I have helped others, but I DO KNOW how others helped me, helped change my life, showed me how to become better and do better for myself, my family and others.

This Underground Inspiration Contest should be amazing as well. It has NOTHING TO DO with how much body fat you lost or inches from your waist you lost, it’s a combination of the physical AND spiritual changes that have come from you being a member of The Underground.

When you make your Video talk about how your life has changed in ALL areas, there is NO right or wrong answer.

The Most Inspirational Video will receive the Following Gifts:

1) Lifetime Membership to UndergroundStrengthCoach.com

2) ALL the Underground Strength Products Listed HERE: This includes The Russian Lion Power Course, Grip Experts, MMA Experts, The Underground Sandbag Assault, The Underground Strength System and The REAL Man Muscle Building Course

** Sign Up for The Underground Inspiration Contest HERE **

Peace!

And Remember….
