1 Day to Change Your Life?

Have you ever had 1 moment or 1 day that changed your life forever?
I’ll bet you have.
Looking back, for me, it was the few minutes right before having my ACL reconstructed, as I layed on the surgery table, all I could think of was wanting to help athletes avoid my mistakes so they would never have to experience my pain and frustrations.
This was not a joke to me.
I had spent years and years training endlessly and sweated hundreds of buckets and I had met frustration one too many times.
I had to move forward, onward, no more looking back and thinking “what if?”
It was time to move forward and time to find a way to change the world.
It’s the same with my training business. I experienced pain and lots of it.
Financial pain and the pain in put on all my relationships as I spent lots of time figuring out how to make it all work.
I almost lost my house, my relationship with family was FALLING to pieces and I was not connected with my friends as I struggled to get bills payed.
I don’t know exactly why, but one thing about me is that I genuinely care about people. It’s in my blood, my DNA.
I LOVE to help people. Yes, it makes me feel good but even more so, it makes me feel good knowing that if I help someone grow their business, this means they are also paying it forward, helping others, who then help others and on and on it goes as they pay it forward.
It also means that this person has a better chance of taking great care of his / her family. As a father and husband, my priorities in life and what is REALLY important has changed BIG time. It’s not about Me, Me, Me all the time….
I admit, I’m a bit of a wuss when I hear someone is not seeing their family or struggling to pay the bills and give their family all the great things in life that want to give.
I want to see people happy.
I want to see people doing what they love.
I know it can be done.
I also know that life goes waaaaaay too freaking fast.
Last week I received an e mail from an OLD training partner, whom I met when I was 15 or 16! I am 33 now, but I remembered our very first workout back in the cold winter of 1992!
That was half my lifetime ago, yet it seems like yesterday.
There is NO time to waste.
This shit can get scarey, I will not lie or skate around that topic.
But I believe in YOU, and sometimes you just need to hear that someone REALLY CARES AND REALLY BELIEVES IN YOU!

That person is me, I kid you not.
I want to make sure you WIN.
No more dreaming of your perfect life, time to LIVE YOUR Dreams.
Dedicated to your success!

Great post, Zach.
I know what you mean about having an experience that allows you to see the big picture, and where your true passion lies.
My passion comes from a time in my life where I struggled with an eating disorder and was working out non-stop. I hated myself, because I knew what I was doing was wrong.
Once I got over the eating disorder, I dedicated myself to helping people find no non-sense ways to achieve fat loss. I wanted to reveal to them the paths they can take to achieve their goals without having to revolve their life around diet and training. There are far more important things . . .
Anyway. That’s my story.
Hey, we have something in common. Some of my family came from Russia around the time of the Holocaust. ; )
Thanks again, Zach. I love reading your blog posts and watching you and your athletes kick ass. Keep it up!
Hey Zach,
Thanks alot for your email man. Its really inspiring that you really care about getting people where they want to be and I respect you for that. Reading your blog helped me to realize that my life really isn’t just about me. After reading I’m going to push myself harder not just for my sake, but for the sake of others. Thanks again man
yo z,
GREAT post bro! i love it! speaking on it, you know there’s been plenty of times within the last couple of years where i’ve been worried about how things are going to turn out and if i’ll be able to pay all of my bills or if i’ll bring in enough this month to keep my head above water and so on.
ever since i went to your cert, things have been so different. i know i can live off of my passion with coaching athletes because that’s what i’m all about. thats what i love to do and thats what im good at.
before i was training in a big box gym where sometimes,i actually dreaded to go to work. the reason was because i didnt get to train by my rules. i was limited. i was forced to train people who had no passion to train or even be at the gym which would then make me not want to train them. that’s not me!! training is my life!
i love helping all people more than anything! but i’m not a babysitter, i’m a strength coach. You helped teach me how to harness my passion and make a living from it!
there’s VERY FEW people out there that i have met in my life that i know i can both trust and also relate to on such a high level. your passion for strength and conditioning and helping athletes is huge. not only do you love helping others but your so passionate about it yourself that your always in the trenches working your ass off in the gym as well. you don’t see that a whole lot with many coaches. Some will talk but dont walk. athletes will see right through that shit!
i’m getting ready to open my own gym in omaha (the forged athlete) and i’m 110% confident it WILL blow this town sky high! i know that its up to me to get it done! coach z, you helped me believe that i can do it and i know that if i ever need help, you’ll be there.
if any of you out there are wondering what to do next, you get your ass to the underground strength cert and start living your life! i did.
Hey Zach, great post man! I had ACL surgery 5 weeks ago,it definately helped me put things into perspective. This post was really uplifting!
Thanks for that Zach. I already knew some of that stuff about you, and you continue to be a constant inspiration to me. You really do rock!!
luv ya lots
Jackie
Perfect timing, gave me the reasurance that i’m not just a goof with stupid ideas. thanks Zach
Great Post Zach!
Growing up in a family business environmet (dairy and farming) I was always taught that doubt will kick your a** faster and harder than anything else- “can’t” means you didn’t try and couldn’t meant that you gave it 100% and your family was then there to have your back! Hard work may not reap you fortunes, but you with hard work and perserverance you will never go hungry and never be a failure. Faith is key- faith in yourself, the faith of your family and freinds in you, and your personal faith in God! Bad things happen to good people, sure, but if your learn from it, grow from from it and and make a positive change from it, I feel that even the worst situations can carry a positive value (yea I know death, tragedy, and deseases suck- but if you can take something learned, or other lives changed for the better the sacrafice or suffering is not lost in vain!)
Keep on Bro, your a great example, coach, and leader! the world would be better to have more voices like yours!
heh
having my acl reconstructed had a similar effect on me
Love it!
I just had a converstion with a person about me caring too much. I was just going to start thinking that maybe thats not the best thing for me to do. I had this converstion 15 min before reading this post. Weird!
The truth is, I care and thats who I am. I also want people to be happy around me. I’m just wired that way. I don’t have it all figured out for me yet, but getting closer. This post hit me at the right time and I needed that. Z you kick ass! never stop being who you are and thanks for the advice and info.
Thanks dude, this blod post meant a good deal.
I remember having appendicitis, had a deadly bowel infection; didn’t even know my family almost lost me.
It’s all about GIVING, not RECEIVING.
Sometimes it takes us until we’re old to see that. Let’s hope to God it’s not always like that.
Live strong. Be strong.
p.s. NEVER stop this blog, man. Peace.
Great post from the heart Zach,
Keep it going man
Marc
Great post, Zach. Thank you for sharing and giving us some perspective. Nothing like the knife to make one step back and ask what’s most important; to refocus on what we value most.
Cheers.
Hey Zach,
This is the first time I have commented on your blogs (although I have been a big fan of yours for a while now). But this really hit home and came when I just needed to read it or have someone say that they believe in me.
Just a few months back our first child was born and he has changed my life like I would have never believed. I know understand that it is up to me to provide for him and my family and to be the best role model for him and to be the man that steps up to the plate to provie for him and my beautiful fiancee and give them the life that they deserve.
Having lost my dad to cancer over 10 years ago, I want to give everything to my son that my dad couldnt.
I agree with caring about people and I have had clients in my gym tell me not to care so much about the people that arent achieving as much as I know that they can and concentrate on the income that they provide, but that is not me! I want to see everyone be the greatest that they can be and if I can help in anyway to help them achieve that then that is the best reward I could ever ask for.
I have only recently opened my gym and am going through the struggles of wondering if I will be able to pay the bills each month and working a normal 9 to 5 job to support the gym and family! Yep its hard work, but I know that rewards only comes from hard work and if it werent for the hard work and sacrifices that you have to make then you wouldn’t ever cherish and protect the achievements that you make!
So great post mate (yes I am an aussie), and came at just the right time for me!
keep up the inspiration you are to everyone!
U guys rock w/these comments. I recevd. several more via e mail b/c they wanted to keep them private, and man, some of the things people have gone through are f**ing TOUGH!
Everyday you should set aside at least 15 minutes, posisbly 30, to go to a quiet place and envision the success you want – listen to some motivational CDs during this time and get away from the noise of the outside world.
Trust me, it can be done, no matter how busy you are
An awesome site which has tons of these types of business, educational and motivational programs is at http://www.nightingale.com/
I regularly pick up products from them!
Thank you every1 for dropping your thoughts and comments, I wanna keep these bad boys going!
Have a KICK ASS DAY!
Peace!

That was truly inspirational brother!
Zach – you’re a good man and providing and invaluable service to the fitness community as well as providing for your family. Kudos to you on your success and determination to help people and do it with integrity.
I’ve had several defining moments in my life, especially in combat, (there really are no atheists in the foxholes), but my most recent pause for reflection was after heart surgery to repair a faulty mitral valve.
Amazing how the things you use to think were important take a back seat when reality knocks at the door. All is well and I am back training hard and planning a comeback to competitive powerlifting. It has been 4 years since I have been on the platform. No more excuses – always pursue your dreams and your passion.
Z,
You are the man as I always say and always will say. YOu do care and give your all to everyone that is ready for it and needs it. You do not expect anything back or have the “you owe me one” attitude.
You have been there for me and still continue to, through the good and the bad. So thank you bro. You are a true inspiration and a great friend that I am happy to have!
