Who the hell are these guys?

Who knows what the heck is gonna happen when Steve Maxwell and I get together on July 12, for The Gladiator Seminar.

With both of us living on opposite ends of the country, this will likely never happen again.

With unique and different views on physical culture, we’ll be bringing some serious madness to the table and if you’re able to see what we do, you’re going to one of the few who take our methods to a whole new level for yourself and / or your business.

See you at The Underground!

In Strength,

Zach Even – Esh

Training for Gladiators and getting CRAZY Strong

chowbigdrag.JPG

Come to my gym and you’ll see us using many training tools:

- barbells

- dumbbells

- thick bars

- sandbags

- kettlebells

- sand filled medicine balls

- anvils

- stones

- sleds

- ropes

and of course, bodyweight….

But, one thing that has been a huge factor in developing strength and power endurance is the use of two critical training tools and the endless variations that come with them, and these tools are ….

Training with a Navy SEAL

navy-seal-4.jpg

About 15 years ago I was training a bit with a Navy SEAL. He was in Israel at the time, but eventually came to the states.

His training regiment was brutal.

Three days a week he ran a good 10 km or more. My brother would run with him since he was in the military as well, in a unit called “The Cherries”. He told me these were not jogs, but all out races and “Joe” was out to win, every single time.

The other three days Joe would swim a good 30 minutes. Sometimes a pool swim, other times the ocean.

Then, on evenings, Monday – Friday, Joe and I trained together. But, he was always there before me, and always stayed after me.

Poker or Chase the Dream?

I was at a coffee shop one day and the guy working there saw my Underground shirt on. He told me he saw us on you tube, heard about us, saw us in the paper.

He told me he was trying out for the nearby minor league Baseball team, but he never made the cut the year before. He was a skinny dude, no doubt, so, I asked him, what are you doing now to change that?

The 80/20 rule

bagcurl.jpg

Tim Ferriss encourages the 80/20 rule like a beast to keep your business kicking ass. It simply means 80 % of your results often come from 20% of your actions. He’s correct. Now it’s time to apply these rules to getting ripped, getting stronger and getting in better condition.

This rule is basically telling us that much of what we do can be wasted time, maybe, possibly, perhaps? YES.

I feel the same rule applies with your training. How many movements are REALLY helping you get where you want, look the way you want and perform the way you want?

I have my select few that jack me up and increase my strength without fail and you can see these at The Underground as I post my workouts on the forum every single time.

Time for change

utmlpics-069.jpg

Change can be a good thing.

I am feeling a need for change. It starts from a point much deeper than my emotions, it’s just a Gut feeling I have.

I find myself running home rather than driving home.

I begin removing favorites such as squats and deadlifts, and return to a lot of bodyweight training, kettlebell workouts, sandbags and sledge hammers.

Sprinting becomes more common place, as does jumping, dragging sleds and running with the prowler.

Removing breads, milk and dairy from my nutrition intake begins to take on a new beast. My body craves the change so I listen.

My training will evolve, and you must search for this art form deep within yourself….I have been training since age 13, now 32, I can feel what my body wants and needs, you will begin the same journey.

Soon, the mountain bike will be dusted off and I’ll be riding the trails, stopping when I find a log for lifting, a stone for pressing or rowing or a tree branch for pull ups and leg raises.

Nature is taking its course with me, but I’ll always remain an animal :)

In Strength,

Zach Even – Esh

An OLD wrestling workout

zachstairsprint.JPG

Last night I went to the neighboring downtown with my family as everyone got some ice cream. In case you’re wondering, I skipped the ice cream part :)

Don’t worry, I’m still human, I eat ice cream, but I’m on a mission, and that will require doing what others don’t do.

On the way home, about half way there, my wife dropped me off on the side of the road so I could run the rest of the way. This wasn’t your typical jog all the way and do nothing else.

No my friend, this was a brutal workout mixed with many different methods and movements.

First of all, I had to run the first few minutes up a steady incline. I ran instead of jogged, but didn’t sprint all out. I then walked the distance of 2 or 3 houses, dropped and cranked out 10 push ups. The running began again, this time, through the woods behind my old elementary school, jumping over bushes, downed trees, on the side of a hill and finally sprinting through the parking lot.

I jumped up and grabbed the basketball rim and cranked out 5 perfect pull ups.

6 Feet 5 Inches

laird-hamilton.jpg

Laird Hamilton is a beast of a man. He surfs waves that would sink huge cruiseliners, he defies the odds and might be seen as a God in the ocean.

Ironically, we have ourselves a modern day Laird Hamilton tearing it up at The Underground Strength Gymnasium.

At 6 feet 5 inches, Kurt Gregory started out as a super skinny guy just looking to dedicate himself to the shape he was once in. A devout surfer and a regular on the Basketball court, Kurt’s body was already in impressive shape. His strength was not very impressive, and when you’re 6′ 5″, moving big weights is tough as hell, because you are moving the weights over a very long distance.

Old school bodybuilder nutrition interrogation

alvino-client.jpg

How ironic, that just after I began my stint in bodybuilding at the once famous Diamond Gym, Johnny Alvino was heading out.

John Alvino was a member of Diamond Gym when it was at an entirely different level of insanity with regards to hard core bodybuilding. From there, John went on to become a specialist in transforming the physiques of athletes as well as hard core lifters.

John knows a thing or two about nutrition so I got hold of this fellow Jersey boy and forced to dish it out for YOU!

Enjoy!
