Episode # 101: This is what motivates me

Athletes come to The Underground Strength Gym, more often than not, weaker than a 98 lb weakling, no joke.

My motivation is to get them strong as hell, and while doing so, I need to walk the talk and remain stronger.

You never know what must be done to represent.

On New Years, 1 of my athletes hit a 115 lb pull up weighing 240 lbs, I hit a 106 lb pull up weighing 220.

One of the young guns, a high school sophomore is addicted to The Underground – he wants to train all the time and always does extra work as he awaits his ride home (that is, if he’s not running to the gym).

Let’s see who wins….

Now, EVERY workout Pierce busts out a challenge at me.

Monday he challenged me to pull ups, so, I let him go first. I also added that I would wear a 20 lb chain. I did that for the mind games, ala Muhammad Ali :)

I hit 15 no problem, Pierce hit 10 :)

Next year he might get me in something, so stay tuned!

Who wound up winning the weighted dip contest at The Underground Strength Gathering?

If Marvin Eder was there he woulda kicked everyone’s ass up and down the street.

But, because Marvin didn’t show, there’s a new Sherrif in town…..

Episode # 98: The Crazy Dip Contest, Part Deux!

This thing gets crazier and crazier!

I know, I know, you’re not shocked :)

And, in case you didn’t notice, episode # 100 is right around the corner!

Holy sh*t, time flies!

You & I BOTH know that time flies even if you’re NOT having fun.

So, f**k it, might as well do what you love and have fun in the process, right?

If you think these dips with 200+ lbs are a big deal, then you’re mistaken my friend.

Marvin Eder has been said to have performed dips with 400+ lbs. Pretty bad ass :)

Will You Live as a Lion or Lamb?

 

Sometimes I get a bit fed up with things and I just dont wanna keep my mouth shut.

Let’s talk training, which all of us should be here for, and, if you’re a fitness professional, pay attention to 2 resources I’m gonna hook you up with.

TRAINING:

I have received, no lie, a good 30 e mails and near 10 phone calls to my gym from a supposed “hard gainer”

He is always asking about the exact sets, reps and specific program he should follow.

He told me he has followed near 30 programs.

He has access to the internet, which, is loaded with so much information, much of it misinformation, that he is confused as all hell.

The dudes from the mid 90’s and prior to had no internet and they got plenty strong, ripped and jacked.

I don’t believe in this hard gainer bull sh&t.

It’s called doing the wrong thing or not doing what must be done.

It’s called hard work.

Get the job done, in and out…

- basics rule

- always try to get stronger

- eat like a mack truck

- eat clean, you know the difference between healthy and crap

He was following so many different workouts and never gave 1 of them a chance to work

If all he did was squat, bench and deadlift every other, always trying to get stronger, he would see powerful results.

Instead he wants to know if he should do the incline bench instead of flat bench, what about biceps, what about calves

F*&k the rules, train hard, period.

Episode # 97: The Dip Contest

Smitty from the Diesel Crew is one crazy SOB!

During our Underground Strength Gathering Smitty started grabbing chains from the rack, each one weighing 20 lbs, and started cranking out heavy sets of 1 rep dips.

Before you knew it, some of my athletes jumped in, AJ jumped in the contest was on!

Check the craziness……

 

I don’t do dips too often to save the shoulders. But, every other month or so I throw them in and pile the weight on. They’re old school and jack up the upper body like no other.

I think the heaviest I dipped was 220 lbs, but, that ain’t jack crap compared to the beastly Marvin Eder who rumor has it performed parallel bar dips with 420 lbs!

Everything is Changing

5 years ago I spent over 4 hours on the phone with a guy by the name of Alwyn Cosgrove.

I’m talking 4 + hours straight, not an hour here and there.

I “met” AC through special business forums that Ryan Lee created, which were membership forums. The most motivated dudes were on this forum, and back then, as they are now, these were industry leaders.

I was living at home, die hard passionate about doing what I do now for a living. Guys like Brian Grasso, Lee Taft, Jason C. Brown and Pat Bieth were members.

Back when AC spent time on the phone with me, he helped me create a system to run my business, which at the time was being run from the garage of my new home.

Except, back then, my home was being worked on – it was getting a complete overhaul, but, the first thing that got the overhaul was my 2 car garage, ha ha :)

I lived with my parents for a YEAR as the house was getting rebuilt, and I payed our contractors through the money I made with my training business.

Little did I know that the smartest man in the fitness industry was lying in his bed with tubed sticking out or his body as he was fighting Stage IV Cancer – you see my friend, AC NEVER told me he had cancer.

He was so passionate about helping me do what I love, he didn’t mention a word about it.

I speak with AC regularly via phone and e mail, and aside from his Coaching group , there isn’t much chance you can connect with my mentor.

But, his Blog kicks serious ass and he gave me permission to borrow a recent post which you will see below. It’s quite powerful and if you have any inkling of a thought that you want to run a fitness business, then you better read every word of what’s written below….

While I was training athletes, some of my athletes were filming away, watching my homeboys at Diesel Crew rock the feats of grip strength….

PS: I’ve been getting quite the number of e mails from Underground fans in the white collar community: lawyers, accoutnants and tech dudes. They wanna ditch the tie and do their own thing, stop working for “the man”.

I agree, life is too short and before you know it, you’ll be 40 or 50 and have passed up opportunity because you were too scared. F**K that!

As you can see, I’m in a “mood” lately :)
