I don’t need no stinkin’ gym!

November 9th, 2008
· Filed Under: Articles · Strength Building · Videos · Zach's Workouts · muscle building

Today I headed to the playground to kill it an OLD monkey bar type gym. And although I own a gym, I still prefer the outdoors. If I lived in a year round warm weather area, my gym would be constructed with no roof and all outdoor training, very much like the weight pit (the old one) at Muscle Beach where Arnold used to kill it.

Check the videos below with a mix of outdoor and indoor training.

I know they’ll hype you up and give you ideas on how to kill it and begin your very own ‘Playground Assault”

I have said it a million times and I’ll say it again. Imagine what you can do with simple things found outdoors or things you can make:

- stones

- logs

- sledge hammer work

- pull up bars / monkey bars

- playground equipment: climbing poles, picnic tables, parallel bars

- tree branches

The possibilities are endless!

Jump Rope phenom, Buddy Lee, told me how he trained with stones and logs outdoors because this is what he heard The Russians were doing, so as he prepped for the olympics in Greco Roman Wrestling, he did the same along with his high intensity jump rope training.

I know you can become a beast with Underground training.

The choice is yours my friend.

Time for you to kill it!

Underground Strength Show, Episode # 7

August 1st, 2008
· Filed Under: Underground Strength Show · Videos

My old bedroom and my old book shelf! You gotta see this! Am I wrong here? Did the Golden Era really rock today’s lifters? Today we have less comraderie, more complainers, more cry babies, more fancy methods and people still want more fancy methods. Here and there I get a complaint about me not showoing anything new.

Is new better? Maybe I can hang myself upside down, use a kettlebell, rubber band and a wooden spoon, that’s new! There ya go, it’s my next video!

I sure wish the camraderie would come back like it was during The Golden Era. Today it’s powerlifting VS olympic lifting, bodyweight VS. free weights, and on and on we go.

Post your comments and let me know your thoughts. Feel free to tell the complainers to shut up :)

I sure do wish the golden era would come back… Hell, I’m gonna bring it back!

Kill it!

The 80/20 rule

May 28th, 2008

bagcurl.jpg

Tim Ferriss encourages the 80/20 rule like a beast to keep your business kicking ass. It simply means 80 % of your results often come from 20% of your actions. He’s correct. Now it’s time to apply these rules to getting ripped, getting stronger and getting in better condition.

This rule is basically telling us that much of what we do can be wasted time, maybe, possibly, perhaps? YES.

I feel the same rule applies with your training. How many movements are REALLY helping you get where you want, look the way you want and perform the way you want?

I have my select few that jack me up and increase my strength without fail and you can see these at The Underground as I post my workouts on the forum every single time.

Just making sure you’re deadlifting….if not, maybe this pic will motivate you.

Lift big weights off the ground, lift them overhead, pull them from the ground up, push them and pull them….squat them….

Get to work.

“I get into a lot of fights”

April 24th, 2008

toughguy.jpgQuite often I get some strange people roaming into my gym wondering what we do and feeling they can do it.

Today, while training someone who is 3 weeks out from an MMA fight and going through his first “trial by fire” I have to remind the guy watching NOT to pick up our Kettlebells. It’s the same as me grabbing his car keys and taking his car for a ride. It’s common sense, don’t touch what isn’t yours. This seems to be a problem for too many people to understand.

Next, while training this fighter, the bothersome individual asks how much it costs to train with us….my answer, “We don’t train just anyone, we train athletes and lots of fighters”…..he replies, “I fight a lot.”

Smokes, Drinks and Can Still Kick Your Ass

March 30th, 2008

Back when I was paying my way through Grad School I was bartending on weekends at a shot and beer joint. Bar tending was also mixed with bouncing.

Saturday nights got wild because bands played most Saturday nights. It was often standing room only and because this was a shot and beer joint, the drinks went fast and people regularly consumed an average of 8 drinks no problem.

I met some serious drinkers, who smoked quite heavily as well, who worked at the nearby factories and industrial plants. They were strong as hell, and they used to help me carry beer filled kegs from the basement to the tap before we had taps running through the floor down to the basement.

These regulars had big hands and thick forearms, all from their manual labor jobs.  They also had no fear of throwing down should anyone bother them in any fashion. Their confidence came through their strength.

Try This

March 2nd, 2008

gymtools-small.JPGSometimes I do one exercise for an entire workout, or one type of movement for an entire workout. Not only is this a great challenge but it is also a great way to overload the body like never before.

Have you ever done all types of carries for an entire workout? I talk about this a lot at The Underground and have discussed the power of this method.

We will carry any and every training tool we have from different positions:

- Barbell on back

- Sandbag in arms

- Kettlebells overhead

- Dumbbell farmer walks

- Keg in bearhug

You just keep on grabbing heavy object after heavy object, over and over again. It becomes one squat / deadlift and carry after another and hits your body from all angles and directions.

Noone ever said this was the way to train, but I know about breaking the rules to get results. If you’re following all the “tried and true” ways that are supposed to get you stronger and in much better shape yet you still don’t see the results, then start breaking the rules.

In Strength,

Zach Even - Esh

P.S. - We don’t follow the rules at http://UndergroundStrengthCoach.com - we break all the rules and do what works. Stop by and you’ll see hundreds of articles ready for your use.

Look what one of our members just e mailed me….

“I’ve lost over 70lbs and feel the best EVER do to my membership to USC.  I would never blow smoke on anything like this.
As I’ve mentioned before, I came from the powerlifting/bodybuilding background and because of my genetics, I was a lot stronger than I was able to get muscle symmetry in order to compete in bodybuilding.
After constantly suffering muscle fatigue during grappling I researched training techniques of combat athletes. That search somehow led to your Myspace page.   Months later and a few dollars I purchased several tools to add to my regular routine.
I read and read and read more of the members section and watched countless videos. Once I got my routines together I just went to it.
I was asked by Master Lloyd yesterday about my weight loss and I told him that the single most decisive thing I did was join USC and learn more about muscle strength endurance.  He said that he knew you.
Don’t get me wrong. There are a lot of things discussed here that I don’t necessarily believe will work for me or I just don’t think will fit, but overall its the ability to read from a vast amount of open sources of people that are just like me.
Thanks again.”
