the pussification of American gyms
April 29th, 2008 · Filed Under: Articles · Zach's Workouts
I have been getting a lot of people stopping into the USC Gymnasium inquiring about membership after getting flack for training hard at their own gym.
If you live in the states, you know the gyms I’m talking about, right?
WOW, NYSC and soon to be popular, Retro Fitness. If you want to train like a Gladiator, forget it, you’ll never survive at these posh health clubs.
You need sweat, grime, rust, loud music and NO rules.
Unfortunately, many of these gyms have been shut down, burnt down (purposely) and wrongfully transformed into the modern day health club….where health and fitness is the last thing to be gained in these “Don’t sweat” facilities or your membership will be revoked.
Today, there are thoudands and thousands of lifters who have gone Underground, taken their training to the basements, garages, playgrounds, parks and empty fields.
An Underground gym can easily exist and prosper, as The USC Gymnasium is doing as we speak.
I suggest you make a stand right now….because you can’t train like a Gladiator in those pussified gyms with a million rules stopping you from truly testing your limits.
Will you make the move, or will you become the typical gym goer…..wasting time, energy and money? There are Gladiators waiting for you to join them….the choice is yours.
In Strength,
Zach Even - Esh

Agree with this post about the pussification of gyms. I am fortunate because at my gym even though it is populated by the pussies and the equipment they use, in one corner of the gym a group of us do whatever we want, kettlebells, Oly lifts, (dropping them too), powerlifting, some strong man stuff. It works for us.

I totally agree. The last gym i was at there were 4 of us that pushed i to the limit every time we walked in the door. Not screaming theatrics, but honest hard work. Doing exercised that weren’t in this months issue of “Chemical Fitness”. And everyone looked at like we were crazy. It seems that most if not all modern gyms are acutally social clubs. While recovering from a shoulder injury, i let my membership expire. And am currently building my arsenal of tools, some store bought or home made. It’s great, I can work out anytime anywhere! I ripped it up for an hour in the rain yesterday, it was great!
