Sometimes, ya gotta push the envelope. The body says stop, the mind says to charge…. upward and onward.

Sure, there are MANY times when I don’t train the way yous see below, actually, I take that back. I’m ALL about the iron. It has changed my life and it can change your life as well.

It’s NOT just about training the body but the mind as well. Gladiators ONLY…. Here we GO!

This workout was NOT just to develop stronger, bigger legs. It was to develop my mind, push me out of the comfort zone.

REMEMBER: Get comfortable being UNcomfortable.

Question For You: How do you organize your workouts to train your mind AND body? Please drop a comment below and share. Gladiators UNITE!

Hey Zach- you and me sound like we’re kins men seperated by the Atlantic! I like to challenge myself by entering events out of my comfort zone- I’ve just entered the Para’s 10- check my blog to see what it involves- not my usual scene at all but thats all the more reason to do it! Take care mate Sam

Good session Zach, Squats push your body and mind like nothing else. I am mid Russian Squat routine at the moment. It is brutal. I swear my body started aching about an hour before getting changed for the gym. That’s your mind saying don’t do this because it is gonna hurt!
What I have notice with this heavy squat routine is you must get the breathing right or you will not get through it. It seems if you can control/focus your breathing you can force your will to push out the reps.
I think most important is that you got to want it bad and believe you can do it, otherwise you will not overcome the how uncomfortable it all is.

Lov’n the facial hair there Zach!

My recipe for leg and mind strength comes from the old 3 minute test via Martin Rooney. set a clock for 3 minutes and take some squats and see how many you can do in 3 minutes. It’s not too bad at first and you can break your record for the first few times. But after a few weeks you feel like you have to sell your soul to get one more rep.

Thanks again so much for showing us the way.

Squats ARE the hardest stuff you will ever do,no wonder when you go to gym,you rarely see guys do any squats, why?Becouse they hurt, becouse they are hard work, becouse most guys are simply lazy to do them. Why?becouse they want to wear long pants all the time, and just show their arms or chest, rest is not important to them,I am 65 years “young” stil do squats, can’t do them as hard as in my younger days, but can stil beat many gays in their 20′s…being a construction worker,I know what hard work means, also I have seen, when they build new houses they always start with deep foundation, they want bigger building they build deeper, bigger foundation,to support it,it just make sense, the same thing is with building great body, start FIRST with the foundation your legs, your squats, and then the rest will follow up nicely,in time…IF you are CONSISTANT!Just my few cents on the subject, enjoy your very informative site.Ivan

as always Zach just keep crankin out the great material. i LOVE squats and every variation. my favorite by all means tho is the back squat. being a lightweight (153) and only 5’6″ i’ve always been the little guy. however since getting back into lifting heavy i’ve boosted my strength up exponentially. i’m no powerlifter but i can crank out a relatively easy set of 20 with 225# and my best single since the last time i tested it is 355#. just keep doin what ur doin and remember that the only thing you can’t do is what you don’t BELIEVE you can do. MIND OVER MATTER BRUTHA.

The Spartan 300 workout is a good mental test for me. The 20 squat program is also a mental grinder. Anything Tabata style can also be a mental tester. And of course pushing the prowler up an incline hill multiple times tests the guts. For a change of pace I will do a crossfit WOD every once in a while.

Arnold, Franco and is that Ken Waller in that pic?

No matter what the workout I need music. Looking for suggestions on music to listen to when I work out. My resolution for 2011 is to find more high energy music than the normal Top 40 stuff. While searching for music I found this video, its pretty funny. Wait until the end for a url to get the song for free:http://www.youtube.com/user/endthebonk?feature=mhum#p/a/u/1/cW8rnMmYID8

Music suggestions welcome. Any songs you can’t go to the gym without?

Thanks,
-B
