On the flip side, although these are MMA fighters / Combat Athletes in training, this does not limit the training to only MMA fighters, athletes can use these workouts as well to improve their overall conditioning and mental toughness.

I appreciate you doing what you had to do to get us this info. I tried this at my gym (a little slower though do to a bad knee) and it was awesome … and brutal. The other guys at the gym were really confused as to why I was leaving the treadmill on and walking away lol. I think they figured out the pattern by the 4th round.

I have trained under Martin Rooney and learned TONS from him. Very creative and technically he’s rock solid. Tells great stories too.

Christian – You can find the Hurricane protocols in Martin’s Training for Warriors book shown above.

Martin is awesome. He trains many of the pro’s at my BJJ school including the current Lightweight Champion of the UFC Frankie Edger. Those hurricanes are brutal… if you haven’t done them, then you are missing out.

Hey Zach,
We at THE V-CENTER do very similar training except we use “giant sets” We will superset 4 to 5 excersizes varying from cinderblock plyometric footwork to bag work to kettlebells to sprawls to running sprints carrying the 100 lb. punching bag and finish with focus mitt drills to holding 15 lb. dmbls out to the side for 30 sec. then to the front for 30 sec….. That kind of variance training is a brutal workout! Awesome stuff Z! You’re constantly showin’ different training techniques you’re out there into everything and WE at THE V respect you for that!!!! There’s definately more than one way to kick ass in the gym!!!

So this is Hurrican training? I read this in the book and it seemed a lot more difficult, after watching this. Now it doesn’t seem as complicated. This is going to be something Im going to incorporate into my weekly workouts. This may seem like a stupid question but I could incorporate pushups right? Being that I am in the military and I like to concentrate in pushups and situps since our PT tests consist of pushups and situps and running.

Matt – Hey bro, this was a low key Hurricane, as these guys were 2 – 3 weeks out from fights so this was an “easy” day, ha ha

The link to Martin’s latest book is below the video, the book is un-freaking-real!

You’ll see some nasty workouts in there!

Mike! ha ha, nice bro, at a commercial gym!

I also have a shitty knee, you can always use jump rope sprints or battling ropes if you have access to them.

Christian, get both MMA books by Martin, linked above, they are worth 100 X the investment

Martin knows his shit.
It’s cool to see a trainer actually doing the workout with the athletes.

Ouch! I use the Training for Warriors workouts in a commercial gym and get funny looks from the guys going endless bicep curl/bench press combos

Zach,

Ive already grabbed a copy of Training for Warriors down at the local book store. A couple of buddies of I where at the base trying the hurricane out. We thought we where in shape being able to surpass the Army PT standards but this workout kicked our ass, one guy made a mistake and had a big lunch prior. I just shook my head and told him not to eat before working out hard next time. Gotta say that the hurricane made us feel like we where out of shape but felt hella good.

A lot of the british MMA fighters seem to be almost anti running( see a recent article in Fighting Fit) I personnally luv running and intervals like these make all other types of training more difficult. Its good to see recognition that all types of training have their place. No new thing supercedes all of the older methods, the effectiveness of these sessions shows that outcomes and bursting your ass is where its at, not always the specific type of training session or tool being used. Train hard and smart and fight easy.

I appreciate you doing what you had to do to get us this info. In a typical MMA workout routine that focus’s on using body-weight, most people think of exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, bear crawls, etc.
