Strongman Training for Freak Strength and Muscle Gains
Oh man, now this was a flash back into time.
I found this video below on my You Tube Page (you can subscribe by clicking HERE & then clicking the “subscribe” button)
This video was filmed in my backyard, the local playground and the tire yard I used to trian at!
I would train there myself, as well as take my athletes to all these locations.
The workouts were sick, using all these odd objects, all because I didn’t have money.
To me, this was not some FAD, I was flat broke, I couldn’t afford a good barbell or a fancy set up.
So instead, we traveled to tire yards for tire flipping, I even rigged up a front end tractor tire for sled drags and sled type movements of all kinds!
The tree logs were from an Old cherry tree that had to be cut down in my back yard because it was hanging over the roof and damaging the house. My wife’s cousin cut the tree down and left me two logs, a 4 and 5′ length and they were heavy as shit!
Man did my athletes get strong as hell and packed on muscle faster than anything else they ever did.
I was combining this training with a pair of 53 and 70 lb Kettlebells back then.
Let me tell you, these workouts added thick muscle and real world strength to me and my athletes at break neck speed.
I guess being broke at the time was a blessing in disguise. if I had money I woulda had a leg press machine, rowing machines and the like in my garage.
Check the video below….
Make no mistake about it though. You can use bodybuilding in combination with this style of training.
I do it and so do my athletes.
It’s some sick shit.
What about you?
Do you combine bodybuilding and strongman together?
If so, comment below.
Let’s crank this shit to 30 + comments!
Kill it!

Comments on Strongman Training for Freak Strength and Muscle Gains
HELL YEAH!!! A lot of those clips seem like footage from one of your 1st dvds that I got from your site awhile back. I for one surely try to mix my strongman training with body building type workouts to have the best of both worlds. Sometimes when I do the strongman type stuff alone for awhile and I go back to some bodybuilding movements I realize how much i miss some of them:)
I absolutely love this training, that’s the workouts that gives one real-world-strength!!! nothing fancy, only hardcore work.
I love mixing in some body building into my training. I usually start with a heavy lift in the 3-5 rep range for 5 sets for pure strength then i will superset with some assisting moves in the 8-12 rep range for 4 sets to help pack on size. then I’ll have some fun with a sandbag or tyres to finish of with which helps with my conditioning and work capacity. Here is an example of a typical strength training session for me (prodominantaley back and shoulders in this one.) Please leave any comments below (good or bad!) as to any improvements I could/should make.
1. Dumbell Snatch: Heavy 3-5 reps/5 sets} Working on pure
2. Weigthed pull ups: 3-5 reps/5 sets} strength
3. Superset (3 sets) a)Wall walking, max effort
b)Assisted rows 8-10 reps
4. Superset (3 sets) a)Scare crows 8-10 reps
b)Forward DB raises 8-10 reps
5. Finisher e.g Sandbag clean and press
DB swings
farmers walk (go heavy)
Thrusters, etc
I use a moderate weight for the finsher and do 2 sets for maximum effort/reps.
I will do strength workouts like this on Weds and Fri targeting different muscle groups and work on intense conditioning Mon,Tues and Thurs which will usally consist of hill sprints, jump rope or a Ross Enamait style circuit. Weekends are for rest and playing sports with my kids. Getting carried away with my reply so gonna end it here. Many thanks. Dan, U.k
My players have gotten so much stronger using underground training!

Dan – i would throw in scare crows and front raises last, or, use them as a warm up – get the heavy stuff in first brother
Sean, yea bro, its’ from ancient training methods, the first stuff we used, still using it today!
sometimes i really miss those days when I never even owned a gym
