Here we go, another one of my “deep” posts for you. I hope this will make you think and take action. You see, about 1 1/2 years ago I was having dinner at my friends home in Florida, Ryan Lee.

We were speaking about my readiness to open a gym so I can do what I love most, which is training athletes, especially young athletes, and getting them STRONG.

I love the internet, but, I need fresh air, I need to wrap my hands around iron and sweat like my athletes do.

He told me to do what I love, and I stated boldly, I LOVE to train hard core, serious athletes. His reply, “That’s what you were born to do. You were put on this earth to get people STRONG!”

tony-soprano.jpgBeing that I’m from NJ, I’m sure you know I am a big fan of the now extinct show, ‘The Sopranos’.

Tony is one BIG guy, aka, he’s one FAT dude!

Believe it or not, I know a guy who looks pretty close to “T” himself. The ironic thing is, this guy was not long ago a lean and mean 205 lbs.

Now, he’s a button poppin’ 280 lbs!

It’s scarey because he ballooned up in weight rather quickly, and he did the same way most other men do it, and that’s once they get comfortable in a relationship.

I offered this guy my help, but I think he’s scared of my training, but hey, I don’t blame him, he probably thinks I’ll smash him with some tractor tires and who knows what else :)

He keeps saying, “I need to get back into things slowly”. So he walks a few miles almost every night with his wife. It’s a good one hour walk. My workouts can be as short as 15 minutes, but, that’s not the problem.

His problem is all the excuses he makes….

Slightly over 2 years ago a young wrestler began training with us….

He weighed 88 lbs at the time and was 1 month out from wrestling season in which he would be wrestling at 103 lbs.

We had little time to prep before the season and in the first 3 weeks of the season he broke his collar bone during a wrestling match.

When you’re weak and have little strength and muscle, you can bet that your ligaments and bones are also weak.

Through the years we trained him with our Underground methods and every year he kept packing on the muscle and adding lots and lots of strength.

Believe it or not, we did not use a whole lot of barbell work….no back squats and no bench presses.

We didn’t have the need for them for the most part. Everyone needs something different, we can’t prescribe the same thing for everyone all the time, and this was certainly one of those times.

I headed down to the local elementary school to vote for the town budget and wow did I have some flashbacks.

This was my old elementary school. I remembered the gymnasium as being HUGE, but when I stepped inside today it seemed so small. The ceilings were low and I felt closed in.

I voted and yes, I voted for the budget. These kids need more physical education equipment and better facilities. They need less crowded rooms and more freedom to move and learn.

I remember running in that gym, playing kick ball, sprinting and playing softball out on the back field.

I saw a photo of my old principal, and boy did I give him a run for his money a few times, but not as many times as my older brother did :)

I am so pumped for the soon to be released new product I am tightening up.

It is packed with so much info and tons of killer bonuses…Oh man, I am so psyched can feel the earth shaking!

This new product will really give you an inside look at how I train with my insane schedule.

Speaking of training, I am setting up some backyard tools because there are times on the weekend when I really need to train just to clear my head.

I have a 70 lb Kettlebell, a climbing rope and next on my list will be a long chain, a long tow strap and some PVC piping to rig up a suspended pull up bar from a thick branch in the backyard.

Above, 1 arm high pulls with a 150 lb Globe dumbbell.

Strength training seems to teeter totter between ultra basic to ultra fancy and then back to ultra basic.

Fancy never worked too good, yet people cry and moan when they see the basics are encouraged. They then claim they were the originators of these basics whether it’s with a barbell, a sandbag a stone or a variation of certain bodyweight exercises.

I have books from the 1800′s with all of this information. It is powerful, powerful stuff. It’s powerful because I use and so do my clients.

Still, I’m hungry to learn more. So today, i took part in Day 1 of Valery Fedorenko’s American Kettlebell Club Certification. Valery is a world champion in Girevoy Sport, aka, Kettlebell Lifting.

Now, although he is a world champion, he still has a Coach. And, although he is a world champion, he utilizes ONLY the basics to improve his lifts. Why the basics? You know the answer: They Work!

I have also said this before: Everyone knows how to bench press, squat and deadlift, yet VERY few are moving hundreds and hundreds of pounds in these lifts. The basics can be tweaked and combined with other movements to increase your results dramatically.

The magic of program design is critical, but more importantly is your desire and determination combined with your discipline to keep working those basics over and over again.

The complainers of basics who bed for fancy training will always be talkers and skinny, those with the grit and determination to sweat and get under the bar will rise to the top.

Which one are you?

In Strength,

Zach Even – Esh

P.S. – The ultra basics can be found here. They work, but they also require VERY hard work.
