In Strength, --Z-- P.S. - This style of training is not for everyone. The psyche certainly pushed everyone harder, as we competed against one another. He was a freak and had freakish training methods
He walked through waist high water for over an hour, lifting his legs out of the water on each step to develop work capacity. He would snatch throw a 220 lb. barbell for 100 reps backwards over his head as a warm up to his olympic lifting workouts. He trained in solitude. He trained in training hall or his backyard. There were times he would train with a barbell in the water as well, diving under and emerging seconds later with the barbell ripped through the water into a power … [Read more...]
Who remembers this BEAST?
This is the guy who was putting the boxing world on it's rear when he was a young kid. At age 19 he was knocking out the best of the best. He trained in a secluded area in up state New York - he had the eye of the tiger. His physique was built like a mack truck, thick and solid. His legs were built like tree trunks, and all his jumping rope certainly helped. Juming rope might be the most primitive form of exercise with such a simple tool, but remember, almost all movement begins with the feet. … [Read more...]
Off he goes
One of my athletes is heading off to Pa. for a good month for some family vacation time. They have a place "in the woods", so he was very worried about missing his workouts. I told him about what we used to do in my back yard, and how powerful the underground strength training was when we first began, it was truly shocking! We had two tree logs, a climbing rope, some stones, a few sledge hammers and that's it! Our wrestlers began with a 10 minute circuit of max rounds of this workout: 1) log … [Read more...]

Short on time and low on equipment? All you need is a dumbbell or a kettlebell. Try this workout I cranked out the other day in my backyard! I used an olympic dumbbell weighing 75 lbs. Zach’s Strength Workout
Today, I feel like I have trained all day. From the running of the hills with my daughter in her jogger, to a short yet powerful dumbbell workout in my backyard, to the unplanned full body work I did today at my Underground Strength Gymnasium. Here's what I did today with my buddy Grif. Grif warmed up with 2 sets of sled drags and then began squatting. I didn't plan on training but after his squats began the barbell forward lunge, so I decided to jump in. We hit barbell forward lunges for 3 … [Read more...]
Training for MMA and Combat
My gym, The Underground Strength Gymnasium, is connected to an auto garage. On the side of that garage, the owner throws old tires away. Some with the wheel still intact, others just the tire. I snagged a few and helped guys make these tires into sleds. They were happy :) Can you build muscle and build strength through the use of things you might find in a junk yard? You better believe it. Check out the video below and fast forward to the 1 minute mark. I am not too fond of the partial reps … [Read more...]
It’s FREE and Awesome!
Ya gotta love these...they're FREE and they get you freaking strong! My motivation all began when I visited the tire yard in town, and I spent about 30 seconds wrestling a tire to flip it over, which damn near killed me. Then, the "Tire Yard Freak" walked up, took a few puffs of his cigarette, threw it down, and flipped the tire 3 times in a row....no knee lift, ALL power. Just a pure FREAK! His strength shook me up and woke me up. Why? Because he wasn't a guy "lifting weights" in the gym, he … [Read more...]
