This episode of The STRONG Life is inspired from a post I shared recently after a newspaper journalist interviewed me about why NJ does not have certified, experienced and qualified Strength Coaches running the weight room. 

It made me think of where we are today with athletes, sport coaches and parents of athletes.

I was interviewed a few days ago by a newspaper journalist.....

I said something I've been saying for 20+ years:

EVERY Football Player and Wrestler should be in MANDATORY Strength Training by the time they are in Middle School.

I am MOST shocked by parents of Wrestlers and Football players who say the most uneducated and ignorant comments such as:

"He likes training on his own....."

"He just wants to train with his friends...."

OK.

So, your son (and daughters in wrestling) are in a sport where athletes have torn ACLs, torn shoulders, broken bones and some even broken necks......

And you're OK with some average, podunk "workout"??!!!

I have a close friend, his son is in Football, LAX and Wrestling.

His son said, "Dad, I don't really know if I want to wrestle anymore....."

Dad replied - "Listen MFer. If you want to play Football, you will ALWAYS do 2 things: Wrestle and Lift. If I am sitting in the stands of a Football game and something happens to you, I need to know I did EVERYTHING to protect you on that field. And the only way I can do that is through STRENGTH & WRESTLING."

This Dad is no amateur, he has Coached D1 and NFL since the mid 90s, he has seen a Lot.

PARENTS - Your son at the local gym with friends looks very similar to what you see on the couch..... At HOME.

Laying on machines, on the phones. That is NOT Legit Strength Training.

As a Dad myself, we feel bad when we push our kids to uphold a high standard.

Until we realize that the easy stuff is exactly what leads to being average at best. AVERAGE.

Hard Work offends many athletes today.

Saying "Squat Lower" BREAKS athletes today.

With all these options, we build weaker kids, NOT just physically, but most of all, MENTALLY.

Seeing athletes push each other, hyping each other and getting fired UP is sooooo rare today. It is so rare today, that kids get scared and think something is wrong with an athlete if he is getting fired up while training.

Coach a group and most athletes are silently waiting to be told what to do, when to do it, how to do it. Some will go an entire hour saying Nothing.

Without the phone in their hands, they are LOST.

We are in very strange times and most don't want to admit it.

I am saying it and of course, MANY will say, "Zach, you're so mean. Zach, maybe YOU are the problem."

I am trying to PROTECT these athletes by getting them Strong and TOUGH.

God for bid we say the word "mental toughness".

There's popular coaches out there who shun this.

I don't recall tough games / matches / competition being won by the weaker individual / team. It does NOT happen. 

I never knew we'd get to a place where being coached and working hard would be such a rare thing......

I like building WINNERS and working with WINNERS.

Losers like other Losers because together they are in comfort while lying to themselves......

Comfort is the enemy.

Easy shyt never worked. Laziness was NEVER cool. And, it NEVER will be!
