In a world where blaming others and lack of responsibility is running rampant, I want to turn the page for a moment.
I am asked often about "sports specific training" and running 2 gyms and listening to parents and athletes get duped has me questioning when the bull shit will end.
Parents talk to me about "football specific workouts" or "baseball specific workouts".....
Is squatting, deadlifting, throwing objects, jumping, sprinting, carrying and lunging NOT specific?
The development of a successful athlete requires a team approach:
- GREAT Sports Coaching
- GREAT Strength / Performance Training
- GREAT Work Ethic on the athlete's part
- GREAT Nutrition
- GREAT Lifestyle
The less committed an athlete is to the above facets of sports performance, the less successful he becomes.
There is NO power in blaming others. To become great, the responsibility is on your shoulders.
Below I answer questions regarding Football strength & conditioning BUT they can be applied to ANY sport.
I also answer why some athletes are WAY behind where they should be in terms of physical AND mental development.
Our MOST successful athletes, Football players and other sports, they ALL followed through above and beyond merely training with us at The Underground Strength Gym.
- They ate as we recommended
- They did the extras on their own: calisthenics, sprints, stretching, mobility
- Training the mind
- Dialing in overall lifestyle
The athlete who didn't achieve BIG success or even beyond average success were the same athletes who did NOT have parent support as well as having a long list of excuses. Excuses on nutrition, excuses on being too busy, excuses on why they can't do extra sprints and calisthenics on their own.
And the truth is, some kids realize, holy shyt, this is going to take a LOT of work and I don't want to work that hard.
My advice to the athletes is simple: Don't live a life of regret. Do it NOW.

Thanks for the great information, as always. As a PT, I strongly agree with your points about sports specific training. The gym is where strength, power, speed, mental toughness, etc is developed. Sports practice is where the athlete improves sports skill and conditioning. Just my two cents. Watched a movie last night that I think you would like: Whiplash. Crazy intensity.
