Speed Coach Asks: Strength Training WithOUT A Weight Room?

share

GrifRopePullI recently had a Coach who is running Speed Training Camps for athletes ask about incorporating Strength work while out on the field as they have No access to the weight room.

This is a GREAT question and I am psyched to hear from a Coach who understands that being STRONG is integral to the development of speed.

To some, being without a weight room is seen as a dilemma, for me, this is where I was born & bred, lifting heavy objects in backyards and empty fields.Nothing fancy about what we did but damn, the results were powerful and I was ready to compare my results up against anyone else's

Here's what I have to say about combining Speed training with Underground Strength.

Remember.....

There are NO limits in the many ways we can develop strength. I feel that NOT having a gym is a blessing in disguise. We learn to truly appreciate and respect what it takes to develop strength.

If you have access to bleachers perform bodyweight squats and at the end of the last rep plyo jump to a step or row. Squat again say 10 reps(good form, and deep) then jump to the next step/row. Bring it to the top and the legs are done-Son!
Play off of Louie’s Squat then box jump.
    Love the dog barking!

    1. DW agreed – use those bleachers!!!

  2. I like and i do a lot of animal moves. Lot of fun and they are brutal and tough ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Luko, absolutely, I agree! Bear Crawls and crab walks are legit, spider man / alligator push ups!

      1. Absolutely! I use dragon walking for overall hip mobility instead of walking lunges. And also many of apes and kong moves, they are intense! ๐Ÿ˜‰

When I went on my vacation in Domician Republic, they had this little “running-trail”. Scattered about were old-school military training posts all made of dense wood. Pull up bars of various heights, angled pull-up bars, sit-up bench, the wall/ladder, and stuff like that. What really stood out to me was all the bars were at least 2 or more inches. My hands couldnt wrap the bar, imagine that. It was so cool to try em’ out.

But for a school athlete, or any athlete for that matter, is to rely on the basics. Basics will always win. Hopefully you have some thick branches around. Use the bleachers, for sure! Push-ups (both slow n controlled and quick rapid reps). Pullups/chin ups (both strict vs kipping). Bodyweight squats and carries with a partner always bodes well. Running (a hard mile and several sets of 40 yard sprints) Consistency in these staples will undoubtfully increase strength and speed.

        Thanks.

I know that is what I would do if I did not have any equipment. The days when i incorporate bodyweight staples such as above, they never fail to kick my ass. I know an athlete would benefit greatly from flipping the tempo of the reps to both strict n’ controlled TO quick, rapid, explosive reps. The best of both worlds in the realm of bodyweight training.

  4. Hi Zach,
Just a comment to say I’ve just completed Day 1 workout of your Bodyweight Bodybuilding Intro Workout. Really enjoyed it & wasn’t as easy as I thought it’d be. I’m 52 & have been doing regular weight training type workouts for the past year or so. Came across your site while searching the internet for something that would get me a lot fitter than just lifting weights & burning off some fat as I wasn’t doing much cardio. Looking forward to progressing through your program.

    1. Tony, Bodyweight Bodybuilding is NO joke, my man. I am psyched you are getting after it! At age 52 you are an ass kicker!!!
