I've always encouraged athletes to cross train with various training methods and through the use of various sports, even on a recreational level.
I encourage my Football players to wrestle and vice versa. I encourage BOTH wrestlers and Football players to train in Judo, run trails, practice Gymnastics and more. We need MORE athleticism NOT less.
Look at what Martin Rooney says with regards to athletes utilizing 'Training for Warriors' even if they are not combat athletes.

Cool! You definitely have to keep your mind open. There is so much to learn in any field that if you close your mind… your progress will come to a screeching halt.
I agree also with the idea of cross-training and exploring different training systems.
Thanks posting the video.

Here’s what I get from this, I trained an All County baseball player this fall/winter. I was a lacrosse player and never liked baseball.
We’re all athletes, we all move, speed, power and agility is all part of sport. I trained that kid hard, lots of heavy explosive work, and moving his bodyweight effectively.
He’s batting .300 and has stolen 10 bases this year on an 8-1 team of which he is the captain.
I didn’t train him like a baseball player, I trained him like an athlete, that meant lots of explosive work, cleans, snatches sleds pushing and pulling. It works when you think outside of your realm.
Great Video, heard a lot of schools mentioned in it that I am very familiar with.
Zach…..awesome post….
As a warrior doing Muay Thai, BJJ, and filipino arts…I highly appreciate this post…well of course being an UNDERGROUND COACH makes me love it anyways!!

Zach,
I like Martin’s comment about not fighting in the cage and still being a warrior. I train in Muay Thai and I train in Army Combatives, a lot of the guys I have ran across all say that your not a warrior until you get into the cage. I think thats bull and Martin just proved it! Great Video!

As a Personal Trainer and avid fitness enthusiast it is great to see someone with such an open mind. The only way to keep learning is to have the right attitude. I believe attitude to be the most important think for a trainer. There are plenty of people who preach about having an empty cup and all the rest of it but don’t practice what they preach. It is good to see someone who is testament to their principles. Keep up the great work i love your stuff.
I used to box a long while back and allthough i was very fit at the time, i now realise how one dimensional my training used to be(and i thought i new it all). since stumbling across the underground way of thinking my strength gains have gone through the roof. Effective workouts are effective no matter what your discipline is, i am currently into armwrestling and i’m using deadlifts, squats and snatches as the core of my workouts, i can’t think of a sport which would not benefit from these exercises.
