I was 15, maybe 16 years old.....
It was 1991 and I was training with Jeff, a guy in his mid 20s.
He knew I was a wrestler and back then, all we knew was bodybuilding. No Strongman training. No Strength & Conditioning, just train hard, not necessarily correctly.
So there we were, on the good ol' leg press. We had already squatted that. I had a habit of always training to failure and beyond. Forced reps always.
Of course, looking back, this was unhealthy for the joints and ineffective for developing strength.
Jeff was sitting 10 feet away on the bench as I was cranking out reps on the leg press. I started to struggle. I was pushing, fighting, going for more reps.....
I began to get stuck and had to use my hands to push on my knees to complete a rep. I struggle to say the words, Help Me.
Jeff responds calmly, Help yourself.
Those words have never left my mind and that was a LONG time ago. What does this mean? It means a few things:
- If you're going for the rep, make the damn rep! Don't rely on someone to save you.
- No one can help you until you want to help yourself.
As we come upon the latest STRONG Life Podcast, I hope you start putting this info to work. Don't be what I call a "Lazy Listener". You just listen but don't do anything. Be a WORKER.
