Lessons from The Spartan Wrestling Camp in Pittsfield, Vt

The Spartan Wrestling Camp in Pittsfield, Vt with Joe DeSena and a variety of wrestling coaches never disappoints.

It's tough, intense and pushes these wrestlers out of their comfort zone.

Time in the mountains, time away from their phones and endless distractions, this is a benefit to everyone.

Joe DeSena and I started this camp about 10 years ago. It's a blur as to when exactly we started this camp, but the first one was a short 48 hour weekend but extremely intense.

Coach Rob Koll was at Cornell at the time and he ran all the skills and live wrestling. I blended in all the wrestling conditioning and of course, Joe had us climbing the mountain each day, the entire way up while carrying a rock.

This Spartan Wrestling Camp is about 2 weeks in length although our first camp was 48 hours and still TOUGH!

The schedule for the wrestlers is Monday - Friday, with 3 - 4 training sessions per day. The first part of the day is usually the mountain climb and crossing the river.

On the weekend, there are 2 sessions each day. Nothing is meant to be easy.

3 meals a day. Limited phone time.

On our final day, we trained at 5:30 AM and I was up at 4:45 AM. This kind of training and lifestyle guarantees you will get to bed early.

I really liked this group of wrestlers and it's always refreshing to be around workers. Workers are NOT the norm anymore. Everyone here is tough, minimal complaints, mostly smiles. I need that in my life.

I despise being around lazy people and when it comes to sports like wrestling and football, I have zero understanding of any combat athlete or parent who allows laziness.

As I said in the video above, wrestling is the most dangerous sport. As Louie Simmons said, "Extreme sports require extreme preparation."

Your environment can make or break you. One of the guys who came up is a cadette at West Point, his name is also Zach. He was assisting the wrestlers and on the last day, the Soccer players with tire flips, rope climbs and stone carries. His leadership was built into him from West Point and he was TOUGH!

There is Nothing better than being around GREAT people - this is true for sports and true for all facets of life.

Standby for an update from my experiences in Vermont at the 2026 Spartan Wrestling Camp.
