I'm constantly asked how to get motivated to train.
People must think I have super powers and always have workout motivation / training motivation.
Yes, I am ALMOST always fired up. Almost, being the key word.
Sometimes I feel like hammered shit.... I can only imagine.6So, there is something I understand about the mind and the body that most people don't realize.
This is it:

In a nut shell, the body wants to be weak and lazy. It is up to your MIND, to change what the body becomes.
As you can see through the video, I find motivation and inspiration through reading, watching movies, videos and seeing what other great people on this earth are capable of.
This constantly reminds me that we have no excuse and we are capable of so much more.
Drop a comment below with what you do to get fired up, motivated and inspired, even when you feel like hammered shit!

This is a great post Zach. Sometimes when it is time to train and we don’t feel like it, it is our mind over matter that counts.
Old SChool quote from Lee Haney:
“If you don’t mind, It don’t matter!”
Twice, or more pending schedule I will drive to a facility to work on my olympiv lifts. If I feel like the lifts are not going well I go to kickers. Some say it is because I am good at them, but for me they are my happy place. I don’t like leaving feeling pissed or defeated. That breeds a defeatist mind so I set out to conquer my big lifts. Deadlift, bench and back squat. The big three. Sometimes I feel so good after them mentally that I go back to my olympic lifts and lift more than I planned.
Good stuff!
Zach I totally agree. This is something that I’ve noticed for years. For whatever reason if I can talk myself to pull that bar off the ground for deadlifts I always start feeling better.
For some reason human nature tells us this is not the case, but in fact once the blood starts pumping and the nervous system gets dialed in it makes you feel better. It’s literally a natural high.
Thanks again for sharing Zach. Nice article.
I think human nature wants us to be lazy, to be followers, to conform and to be weak
Some of us rage against the norms and that’s where I feel best, FAR from the norms!
I try to always keep my goals in mind. Sometimes my job may require me to stay awake for up to two full 24 hour days at a time so I just make sure I am reading and watching good things. And as crazy as this may sound, if I hear that voice saying just rest and take it easy, I mentally and sometimes out loud give myself an ass chewing that starts out with “stop being such a bitch and just do it”. lol works every time! After all nobody really cares what you do when your alone so the only person cheated is yourself….
Lifting heavy and old school is always a great way to get fired up. I can remember finishing one of the first gladiator project workouts and feeling like I could crush anything. Also if I need a bit more, pulling out one of the underground videos always helps. Whether its Zach or one of the other posted videos, the underground is an endless supply of inspiration!
I love where you call out people for using “scientific reasoning” to justify not working hard.
Being lazy is being lazy even if you call it something fancy.
David Ellis, brotha, we know ALL too well what it takes to crush it after 6 years of training together!
Excuses? There is rarely ever a good one!
By nature i am lazy! I hate it, but there is always comfort in lazy, no cares, just me, my potato chips, and some beer! THEN i read ur articles and buy ur programs and it propels me to eat my chips while i squat and drink my beer between my sets! Jk for the potato chips and beer haha but seriously, the way u stay positive and make me feel positive by simply reading what u say makes a huge difference everyday! Im about to include some bodyweight stuff i bought from u! Cant wait! And eat my chips and drink my beer whilst i do it all!!!! UR THE MAN ZACH!
Josh, crushing time, brotha, bodyweight and barbells!
yeah buddy! crushing it! chips, weights, beers all of it!! 🙂
Zach,
Your so on time. Thank you.

I don’t have motivation problems very often, but whenever I do I just tell myself I’ll just go to the gym and workout for just 10 minutes and if I want to leave after 10 minutes I just will, because 10 minutes is better than 0 minutes.
Needless to say I’ve never had a 10 minute workout.
Working hard is the only way to get what you want, if its for your body, life or well being. No short cuts and no laziness!!
