In the Fall of 1992 I got into my first, real street fight. I was totally unprepared for the reality of the streets. As a high school wrestler, I was used to rules, no punches, a referee and a 1 on 1 scenario.

That night, although over 20 years ago, changed my life. It changed the way I thought about training and it changed the way I thought about the street.

Anything can happen out there and I do mean ANYTHING.....

As a family man and with many family men & women e mailing me and connecting with me on a regular basis I have heard how important family is to you. That being said, you have a responsibility to know what the hell is going on out there and should be aware of what to do so you reduce your chances of being a victim.

Enter Tony Blauer. Since 1979 Tony has been at the forefront of self protection and reality self defense for the general public as well as Military, Security & LEO Personnel.

In this episode of The STRONGCast with Tony we discuss the following:

- I am testing opening up each episode by answering a question from either my Facebook page or Twitter. This question comes from a CrossFit Coach who aspires to run his own Strength & Conditioning Facility training high school athletes.

- I ask Tony, What the hell is this "Knock Out Game" and how can you be safer on the streets and less likely to be a victim?

- How one victim of a mugging became more aware and changed the outcome of his next confrontation with the same thugs that robbed him & beat him just weeks earlier

- Why sports Martial Arts may NOT be preparing you for the streets and how you can change that to better prep you for the unknown of the streets

- Why being physically fit changes your ability to handle and harness fear during dangerous situations and confrontations

- How does Tony live the CrossFit lifestyle with his hectic travel schedule and being in his early 50s.

Check out this episode and please drop a comment / question with your feedback! Take this episode seriously and be more prepared for the streets.

  1. I was following Tony Blauer’s stuff before either one of us was in CrossFit.
Funny thing was, I met him for the first time in Santa Cruz at the original CF box. We we’re both there for CF training.

  2. Self defense is all about mindset… its no different than winning… be it sport, lifting, or war.. champions win the game.. win the fight.. win the battle, a dozen times before they even step into the physical. Of course skills and conditioning increase your chances.. but like TB said thousands of people defend themselves every day with nothing but the will to survive.

  3. Great strongcast with a great talker, Zach!

Every man, dad, husband should listen very closely to what Blauer has to say in this interview. So much street knowledge dropped and you really have to respect Blauers experience right there.

My personal experience is similar to what is being talked about in this vid:
-awareness is numero uno. If you’re aware of your surroundings you have a huge advantage over most victims AND villains. Being constantly aware requires training and shouldnt be taken lightly. Having been in dangerous situations helps avoiding the next one (aka listen closely what Blauer has to say about the “next fight”).
-avoiding: if you can – try to avoid ANY dangerous confrontation. Usually nothing good comes out of a fight. Running is 100% healthier than fighting (including all the legal stuff that usually follows a fight)
-decision: if you cant avoid a confrontation, make your decision to fight at YOUR chosen time and dont chose to be a victim. This is a very crucial point. Training will give you greater confidence to make that decision – the decision in itself cant be trained. The decision to fight should put you in absolute beast mode. Many attackers wont be able to handle such a turn of the situation, which gives you 1-10sec to finish the job.
-fitness, training: use your fitness to your advantage. If you’re fit – you’ll be able to outrun 95% of all thugs. In the fight itself explosive strength and quickness usually decides the outcome. Training for confrontation should include a couple scenarios with easy solutions. Practise one kick and one punch 10.000 times is more effective and dangerous to yr opponent than making a philosophy out of self-defense.

Again – great, great stuff and touching a topic a lot of people dont get into. Getting into this can literally be life saving and for sure avoid lots of traumas that can last for a very, very long time.
    Cheers
