When I first began to heavily research the training of athletes, the BIG Buzz words were “functional training” and “sport specific training”.
Everyone and their Mom was training on one leg, using a stability ball, insisted on using pieces of equipment called “functional trainers” – which usually cost between 5 and 10 thousand dollars.
Mind you, this was before you tube came about…. hell, I’m not even sure Google existed at the time…. ha ha
I was brainwashed into thinking those people were right…. Until a Strength Coach said something that hit home HARD…..

I’ve been getting asked the same question lately, “How many sets should I do when focusing on building muscle?”
With my years of experience in training dating all the way back to 1989 and being a successful bodybuilder back in my day and now a Strength Coach, I’ve experienced AND experimented on MANY variations of set – rep combos.
I’ve found what works best, what doesn’t work well and what is a waste of time.
I’ve tested and experimented how to build strength without muscle or excess weight gain (training wrestlers who need to stay in a weight class) and have seen how small tweaks in their sets and reps can help them either gain weight / functional muscle or remain the same weight while gaining strength, power & stamina.

Lately, I’ve been signing off from my e mails lately with a line that is firing peeps UP!
It goes like this: “Stronger Than Yesterday”
3 powerful words, short and to the point.
If we’re not making ourselves stronger than yesterday, better than yesterday, then we’re NOT living.
When I know someone is stronger than me, smarter than me, has greater knowledge than me…. I WANT to LEARN from that person….. drop the ego and be willing to LEARN from others.
That’s why I had Mandler make a video and a special workout, specifically for Underground Strength Nation…. a story that comes from the heart and a workout to not only build physical strength, but mental toughness as well.
