Everything is just a tool. The barbell will always be the King of the weight room, but man do I LOVE heavy dumbbell work. Heavy sandbag training is awesome as well. Explosive bodyweight drills can't be denied either. Check out one of our athletes, CJ Hart, 16 years young, a Football Player and Wrestler. Box Squat 385 x 2 (barefoot) 130 lb Sandbag Clean & Press x 6 easy reps Pull Ups on Steel Beam for the added grip strength challenge I have mentioned many times before about those … [Read more...]
The Sardinian Strongman
Check out my son, Ethan and I kicking back on "Man Day" (soon to be a International Holiday :) The guys from Pumping Iron trained HARD & HEAVY! They had physiques that were granite hard and man could they move some BIG weights! It was a mix of powerlifting and bodybuilding, something I like to call Power-Bodybuilding, and I feel it is the ultimate way to develop insane strength and an awesome physique! Check out footage from one of the stars from Pumping Iron, and Arnold's training … [Read more...]
Plyometrics & Jump Training for Explosive Power
The common myth or misunderstanding is that if you train heavy and get stronger you will be fast as hell. Not so, at least not to the best possible extent. To move like an athlete you must incorporate athletic movements: Sprints, Jumps, Crawls, Climbing, etc in ADDITION to heavy lifts as well as explosive lifts with resistance. Check out 2 Football Players cranking some timed jumps for power endurance and some long jumps for power … [Read more...]
Bodybuilding with Sandbags
I love training with Sandbags. They are simple and brutal. Overall, they are an all in one gym and you can mimic a lot of barbell lifts with the sandbag along with old fashioned farm boy work; carry, throw, loading on platforms, etc. Of course, thanks to the sensitivity of the internet, there are coaches who are crying over who started to train with sandbags first. Or, they think they invented this or that exercise. They can finally SHUT UP, that would be great. Before any of us were … [Read more...]
Develop Full Body Strength with Farmer Walk Variations
I'm a BIG believer in carrying heavy objects of all kinds. It requires you to perform an explosive power clean or a Deadlift at the beginning of every set. Then, you must wrestle the object into position which works the "in between muscles" as my friend Marty Gallagher describes it. Carrying the objects in different positions force your trunk to work in a rotational and stability manner which is excellent for sports preparation. … [Read more...]
REAL World Strength vs Pretty Boy Bodybuilding
It was the Fall of 2007...... Interesting story from today while training a crew of wrestlers and football players.... Two high school kids stopped by the gym while we were outside flipping tires, pulling and pushing sleds, carrying kegs, sandbags and Kettlebells. One of them looked to be 220 lbs of drugged up muscle. How do I know? Because this same kid attended a speed & strength camp that I ran 3 years prior when he was a freshman weighing 130 lbs. Three Years later, he's 220 and … [Read more...]
Big Chest, Big Shoulders, BIG Pressing!
Pressing big is critical - from ALL angles and planes. The overhead press was once upon a time the measure of a man's strength. As Physical Culture lost its appeal and bodybuilding took over the Bench Press became the new measure of strength. Both are GREAT lifts - we don't overdo either variation and always use different tools and objects for each movement. Check out some power pressing below to jack up your chest, shoulders, back and even your arms! That's a 350 lb bench press using a … [Read more...]
Dinosaur Training, Sandbags and a Gift
Recently a gentleman stopped by my gym to gift me with some very, very, very rare gifts. This shocked me BIG time.... This gentleman, named John, stopped by my Underground Strength Gym unannounced. Normally, I am not a fan of unannounced visitors as they want to talk and take me away from the # 1 focus I have, training my athletes. John was DIFFERENT. He waited until ALL training was done for the night before he introduced himself to me. John watches my Underground Strength Show, a … [Read more...]
The Underground Strength Certification Winner Is…
Last fall we had a contest called The Underground Inspiration Contest. It was for members of http://UndergroundStrengthCoach.com Dave Hall won the contest and as my gift to him he got in for a full ride to The Underground Strength Coach Certification. Many have asked me if I will be sponsoring peeps again. The answer is NO. Pissed the F**K Off, Part II
I was just thinking to myself, after answering many e mails today and yesterday, all about success: training success and biz success. The questions were all the same, ALL the same. What I can not drive home enough is the willingness and the ability to actually work, and I mean REALLY work. How did I get strong? How did I pack on muscle? How long will it take? How did I build my biz from my parent's backyard to a internationally recognized business? I F**ing worked my a** off! I have been … [Read more...]
