With the busy times hitting me hard, there is no fear. Most people would give up and skip workouts entirely. I'm simply gonna grab a little piece of my 2 car garage back. It used to be filled entirely with gym equipment, all my Underground tools. Now that I own a gym, my wife took it over :) I have a few Kettlebells in there now, and will bring an old curling bar to the garage and 2 olympic dumbbells so I can load them up with 25 lb plates for some heavy duty Underground … [Read more...]
Ancient Strongman Training
Lifting odd objects has been around for ages. I have books from the mid 1800's that show men lifting sandbags, stones, bars with cemented stones on the ends, ice blocks with handles and other muscle and strength building movements that would shock onlookers of today. The great thing is, this style of training requires no gym membership, and trust me, I have heard some of the music being played in these gyms! I bought a protein shake from a gym and heard a song "pumping"....''Don't be cruel, to … [Read more...]
Who the hell are these guys?
Who knows what the heck is gonna happen when Steve Maxwell and I get together on July 12, for The Gladiator Seminar. With both of us living on opposite ends of the country, this will likely never happen again. With unique and different views on physical culture, we'll be bringing some serious madness to the table and if you're able to see what we do, you're going to one of the few who take our methods to a whole new level for yourself and / or your business. See you at The Underground! In … [Read more...]
Training with a Navy SEAL
About 15 years ago I was training a bit with a Navy SEAL. He was in Israel at the time, but eventually came to the states. His training regiment was brutal. Three days a week he ran a good 10 km or more. My brother would run with him since he was in the military as well, in a unit called "The Cherries". He told me these were not jogs, but all out races and "Joe" was out to win, every single time. The other three days Joe would swim a good 30 minutes. Sometimes a pool swim, other times … [Read more...]
Poker or Chase the Dream?
I was at a coffee shop one day and the guy working there saw my Underground shirt on. He told me he saw us on you tube, heard about us, saw us in the paper. He told me he was trying out for the nearby minor league Baseball team, but he never made the cut the year before. He was a skinny dude, no doubt, so, I asked him, what are you doing now to change that? … [Read more...]
The 80/20 rule
Tim Ferriss encourages the 80/20 rule like a beast to keep your business kicking ass. It simply means 80 % of your results often come from 20% of your actions. He's correct. Now it's time to apply these rules to getting ripped, getting stronger and getting in better condition. This rule is basically telling us that much of what we do can be wasted time, maybe, possibly, perhaps? YES. I feel the same rule applies with your training. How many movements are REALLY helping you get where you … [Read more...]
Time for change
Change can be a good thing. I am feeling a need for change. It starts from a point much deeper than my emotions, it's just a Gut feeling I have. I find myself running home rather than driving home. I begin removing favorites such as squats and deadlifts, and return to a lot of bodyweight training, kettlebell workouts, sandbags and sledge hammers. Sprinting becomes more common place, as does jumping, dragging sleds and running with the prowler. Removing breads, milk and dairy from … [Read more...]

A TOUGH Wrestling Conditioning Workout (Even If You Don’t Wrestle)
Last night I went to the neighboring downtown with my family as everyone got some ice cream. In case you're wondering, I skipped the ice cream part :) Don't worry, I'm still human, I eat ice cream, but I'm on a mission, and that will require doing what others don't do. This time around, I won the ice cream battle. On the way home, about half way there, my wife dropped me off on the side of the road so I could run the rest of the way. I was fired up and even a bit disappointed in myself. I … [Read more...]
6 Feet 5 Inches SOUL Lifter
Laird Hamilton is a beast of a man. He surfs waves that would sink huge cruise liners, he defies the odds and might be seen as a God in the ocean. Ironically, we have ourselves a modern day Laird Hamilton tearing it up at The Underground Strength Gym. At 6 feet 5 inches, Kurt Gregory started out as a super skinny guy just looking to dedicate himself to the shape he was once in. A devout surfer and a regular on the Basketball court, Kurt's body was already in impressive shape. His strength … [Read more...]
