The more I train and the older I get the more I leave out any excuses for people who don't want to train like an athlete. Unless you are specializing in ONE thing, there isn't much of an excuse to stray from all the movements and endless possibilities of working out. I am constantly inspired..... I received a killer t shirt from a man they call "The Firebreather", in english, Greg Amundson. Just wearing his shirt makes me wanna step up my game and not allow myself to go easy. I just hung up a … [Read more...]
Old School Strongman Sandbag Workout, Part II
Here is Part II of my Old School Strength Inspired Sandbag Workout. Part I, was inspired by The Mighty Hermann Goerner. Part II, still inspired by Hermann Goerner, but also inspired by Coach Ethan Reeve. Coach Reeve told me about a workout he did several years ago when I was down in North Carolina to speak at The NC State Strength Coaches Clinic. He did 100 D Ball sandball shouldering reps for BEST time. Coach Reeve was performing "Density Training" back in the early 70's when he … [Read more...]
Old School Sandbag Workout for BAD MoFos, Density Style
About one year ago you may remember me posting a video and article inspired by the Great Strongman, Hermann Goerner and I gave a little taste of his Kettlebell Chain. Well, now things are the same AND different..... Enter The Sandbag Chain..... NOT for the weak of mind or heart, check it out and get after it. … [Read more...]
Master Your Body AND Heal Your Body
I am NOT a hard headed guy when it comes to learning about strength, fitness and physical culture. I laugh at the morons who refuse to listen and learn. Below you'll find two men I respect, admire and confide in to help me improve my own personal training and the training of others. If you're open minded, you'll take advantage of these two Coaches as well, they are amazing, and honestly, that description doesn't do these men justice. Check out The Virginia Beach Beast, Matty Wichlinski, I am … [Read more...]
BAD Workouts, Expectations & Bodyweight Workouts
Last week was the beginning of a tough week of training for me as an injury and fatigue began creeping up on me. I learn a LOT when I have those BAD workouts. Sometimes I charge ahead and push through, other days I lay low and rest. I have a pretty busy schedule, so trust me, if I took a day off every day I felt tired, that would be a LOT of days off. Here's a video of me at the end of a rough day, and I show it to stay true to you. I don't pretend to be superman although in my mind I often … [Read more...]
Attack of the Kettlebells: Using Kettlebells for Power, Conditioning & Toughness
More and more I am using Kettlebells and even subbing them in place of barbells. I'm 35 years young in a few weeks, and chasing the heavy barbell lifts seems to make me feel more beat up than healthy. The body goes through hell after 20 + years of lifting, especially if the first 10 years of info came from FLEX magazine. I am in this for the long run, longevity and health are the priority. Here's the finisher to my Zercher squat workout, some fast and aggressive kettlebell conditioning for … [Read more...]
Powerlifting: Unleash Your Anger
I train very much by feel, allowing my emotions to drive me. If I'm feeling fired up I wanna rip into some heavy barbell work. If I'm feeling in a soul lifter type mood, it will likely be lots of bodyweight and outdoor training. Here's a bit of an angry day, we ALL have em' :) Question for You: Let me know what YOU do and HOW you train when you are having "One of those Days." I am psyched to seeing your comments! ha ha Peace! --Z-- Recommended Resources: Underground Strength Coach Cert - Final … [Read more...]

TWO Muscles You Should NEVER Deny!
TWO things you should NEVER deny or neglect if you want to be strong as hell: 1) Grip Strength 2) Ab Training When I first began training without the use of wrist and hand straps my grip was weak as hell. I used to do chin ups and every pulling motion with straps to take the grip OUT of the picture. BIG mistake. Having weak hands makes EVERYTHING else weak, or, vice versa. A mighty grip makes everything else stronger. For abs, I prefer two movements over others: anything with the power … [Read more...]
3 Lessons From Human – Gorilla Hybrids, aka Freaks of Strength
I am inspired to write this Blog greatly because of two men, both of whom I speak of often: Jonny Hinds, Owner of The Monkey Bar Gym, who will also be presenting at The Underground Strength Gym in Edison in October (stay tuned for this announcement). Rick Gonzales, my infamous college Gymnastics Coach. These men have the seamless strength of Gorillas. They move their bodies through space and perform bodyweight strength exercises that are extremely challenging, yet they show such tight … [Read more...]
