Almost every Friday I e mail The Underground Strength Insider a Weekend Reading & Learning List. So, before we move on, enter your e mail and subscribe to The Underground Strength Insider. The Weekend Learning List is NOT meant to be read all in one sitting. It's meant to be done throughout your weekend. Perhaps you wake up 1 hr early each day before the … [Read more...]
1 Exercise Per Workout & Being AWESOME
It was New Year's Eve... well, just about. It was 3 PM on New Year's Eve and the dedicated crew of athletes & lifters rolled up to The Underground Strength Gym in Edison, NJ. Some had traveled as far as 1 hr to drive here & I let the thought enter my mind.... "Where are the kids who live 5 - 10 minutes away from here who keep telling me they're too busy during the season?" Instead of getting disappointed I get fired up by reminding myself to have ZERO expectations of people. I get … [Read more...]

10 Reasons You’re NOT Gaining Muscle or Getting Stonger
As I "get older" and time seems to be going way too fast, I have been thinking about time, training, life and a slew of other things. This whole life thing goes way too fast. Every year I get older, I quickly do the math and have a memory from age 6 of what seemed like yesterday. You must make it ALL count. Life is too short to walk around weak and with a laundry list of excuses. Bill Starr has a GREAT book call The Strongest Shall Survive. The title alone hits home, it can be updated to … [Read more...]
Box Squats vs Free Squats?
The argument of box squats vs free squats is endless. With the box squat you must sit back and then you literally pull yourself up using primarily hamstring work. At the bottom of the box squat your shins are parallel, while at the bottom of a free squat or weightlifting squat, your knees will often be angled forward and you are going to parallel or lower. The free squat hits more quads and more overall leg work. Here are my thoughts on box squats vs free squats..... … [Read more...]

It's amazing, yet it never ceases to amaze me. Interesting and ironic at the same time. But seriously, WTF is going on with men nowadays? How To Blend Strength, Muscle Building & Mental Toughness Workouts Together
Many make the mistake thinking that to train for strength you must do so exclusively. Or if trying to build muscle, you must focus on the time under tension principle. But, to make gains in strength.... To pack on muscle.... You MUST be mentally tough. You need to have a high pain tolerance, you must have commitment even when the desire to train isn't fully on fire. … [Read more...]
The 6 Most Effective Strength & Muscle Building Methods
I've been doing a LOT of thinking about the various ways I have trained since starting back in 1989, well over 25 years of experience. I thought about the methods that wasted my time and didn't produce anything but all show and NO go muscles. Those days bother me BIG time because they have scarred me for a lifetime and unfortunately didn't help my success in athletics. I also thought about my days of squatting 455 lbs for reps. My days of breaking away from what the other guys in the gym were … [Read more...]
