Training economics is all about utilizing compound lifts to get a lot done in a short amount of time. This is why you'll notice the exercises chosen when Body for Life Champion, Joel Marion rolled up to The Underground Strength Gym. - The dumbbell snatch - The Dumbbell Clean & Press - Barbell Cheat Curl & Press More footage to come, but, till then, check this video out.... Body for Life was created back in the early 90's when I was a competitive bodybuilder by Bill Phillips. Man, I … [Read more...]
TEST Your Muscles & Grip Strength with Strongman Training & Arm Wrestling
Above, The Manasquan Underground Strength Gym. I have mentioned this before, and in my last post, where many of you commented on your favorite exercises being "Ground Based". We're on the same page. I've been on the other side of the map myself, when I was a high school wrestler, using every machine in the gym, lying down, sitting down, smith machines, etc. That training had me looking like a fitness model and performing sub par. There are tremendous strength benefits that come from … [Read more...]
Power-Bodybuilding Workouts
Last night I was so tired when I was done training my athletes at The Underground I was ready to just call it a night and drive home. Certainly, back when I was a teenager or early 20s, training at 9 PM was easy. I had all the energy in the world, granted, I wasn't a family man or running multiple businesses either. But at the end of the night, I knew I just couldn't quit. I had to go hard and dig deep. Times like these reveal and test your character. It's been a LONG week with my son, … [Read more...]
Bodybuilding with Sandbags
I love training with Sandbags. They are simple and brutal. Overall, they are an all in one gym and you can mimic a lot of barbell lifts with the sandbag along with old fashioned farm boy work; carry, throw, loading on platforms, etc. Of course, thanks to the sensitivity of the internet, there are coaches who are crying over who started to train with sandbags first. Or, they think they invented this or that exercise. They can finally SHUT UP, that would be great. Before any of us were … [Read more...]
Develop Full Body Strength with Farmer Walk Variations
I'm a BIG believer in carrying heavy objects of all kinds. It requires you to perform an explosive power clean or a Deadlift at the beginning of every set. Then, you must wrestle the object into position which works the "in between muscles" as my friend Marty Gallagher describes it. Carrying the objects in different positions force your trunk to work in a rotational and stability manner which is excellent for sports preparation. … [Read more...]
Share Your Favorite Power-Building Workout
So, the last video really had your emotions stirred up. Some were pissed off that I was pissed at a kid who was once natural went the drug route and talked a BIG game with nothing to back it up. When I'm asked to describe my own workouts, they tend to be coined as something called Power-Bodybuilding. We are ALL "bodybuilders" - we build our body, period. Here is a recent workout of my very own, check it out: 1) Zercher Squat 5 x 1 - 5 reps 2A) Double Kettlebell Clean & Press 4 x 5 2B) … [Read more...]
REAL World Strength vs Pretty Boy Bodybuilding
It was the Fall of 2007...... Interesting story from today while training a crew of wrestlers and football players.... Two high school kids stopped by the gym while we were outside flipping tires, pulling and pushing sleds, carrying kegs, sandbags and Kettlebells. One of them looked to be 220 lbs of drugged up muscle. How do I know? Because this same kid attended a speed & strength camp that I ran 3 years prior when he was a freshman weighing 130 lbs. Three Years later, he's 220 and … [Read more...]
Dinosaur Training, Sandbags and a Gift
Recently a gentleman stopped by my gym to gift me with some very, very, very rare gifts. This shocked me BIG time.... This gentleman, named John, stopped by my Underground Strength Gym unannounced. Normally, I am not a fan of unannounced visitors as they want to talk and take me away from the # 1 focus I have, training my athletes. John was DIFFERENT. He waited until ALL training was done for the night before he introduced himself to me. John watches my Underground Strength Show, a … [Read more...]
Old School Strength with Sandbags & Gymnastics
Wow, I was just perusing through my book shelf and stumbled across two books: one from 1888 (Yes, 1888, NOT a typo) and 1 from 1947. 1 Book on Gymnastics and the other on using sandbags, medicine balls, logs and homemade fitness equipment and obstacles. Amazing stuff! Well, the pics are amazing, the language is foreign and unfortunately I can not read them :( This "stuff" has been around for centuries. In some countries, stone lifting is part of their culture. And, during certain times in … [Read more...]
