After training for so many years (decades) since 1989, there is one thing about me that will simply NEVER die. I'm ALL about the iron. It doesn't matter what shape or size the weights are, I don't discriminate, I just love to lift. I get better with age, and the reason being is because I ALWAYS Lift and I ALWAYS Learn. I have found MANY people are simply close minded. They don't want to learn. They always respond, But this is how I've / we've always done _________ (fill in the … [Read more...]

Underground Strength QnA: Tire Flips & Training With Injuries
Got some cool questions that I wanna crank out via the Blog. Check em' below as these questions come in often. Enjoy! Q: Hi Zach! My Name is Mark and I live on Cape Cod. If you have a minute I wanted to ask you about tire flipping. 4 of us from my affiliate competed in a Crossfit Competition today and there was a 1000 pound tire-at least that's what they told us it weighed. Any way no one from my team has flipped the tire before and we couldn't even get the thing off the ground. … [Read more...]
Crossfit Football, Teen Athletes, Heavy MetCons & Farm Boy Strength
As you know, last Saturday was 9-11. I drove up to Ct to meet with John Welbourn, former NFL athlete and creator of CrossFit Football. I remember 9-11-01 as if it were this morning. I was a 4th year Phys. Ed. teacher and the librarian was listening to the morning news, as she always did. They were unsure of what happened (the news that is) and thought perhaps two planes collided. Parents were picking up kids early from school and the panic was felt everywhere. I spent my afternoon at the park … [Read more...]
Back to My Roots, Part II – Backyard Beginnings
Check out these next two videos of stone training. The stones weren't crazy heavy so I cranked away with a circuit for strength endurance and conditioning. This is a great way to condense your workouts while still building strength, muscle and stamina. If you're a family man / woman, you know ALL about being limited on time. Check it.... I'll be back to mixing the various odd objects in my workouts with powerlifting once again. I miss the barbell TOO much. Deadlifting and squatting make me … [Read more...]
Back to My Roots
I recently stopped at my parent's pad to get some "work" done before tearing it up at The Underground Strength Gym. This is where it ALL began, training athletes and training myself from my parents home. I began my journey as a strength coach and eventually a warehouse gym owner right HERE. I had a few pieces of equipment I snagged from the newspaper classifieds, the local playgrounds and the stones in my parents backyard. Sounds simple but damn did this basic training produce powerful … [Read more...]
7 Ways to Keep Your Edge and Become a Gladiator
There are times when you think you're training hard. Soon, someone else comes along and pushed you outside your comfort zone. Suddenly you're not as strong, as fast or as tough as you thought you were. It's happened to me and still does to this very day. But, this is why I do it. I need to keep my edge, I FEAR losing it. There are ALWAYS holes in your armor. I've been exposed to plenty of new methods lately and some of them have busted me up. Some are me simply going back to where I … [Read more...]
9 NO B.S. Strength & Muscle Building Tips from Jason Ferruggia
Jason Ferruggia has been through the ringer, literally. He used to be a hardcore follower of Westside Barbell Methods, and, he got strong as hell doing so, as well as his athletes. I remember him telling me of his bench press workouts using 315 for 12-15 reps for several sets. But, with all those years under the bar comes great experience. And.... when the bar is HEAVY, you get banged up. If you're smart, you adjust your training regime into something that works on a regular basis while … [Read more...]
Underground Bodyweight Workout Challenge
I've been to a LOT of wrestling clubs and worked with a LOT of wrestling teams. I used to be shocked and even angered seeing how wrestlers were NOT performing ONE good push up: full range of motion, neck and entire body aligned, tight abs.... How the hell can a wrestler be unable to perform the bread and butter basic exercise that EVERY athlete should be cranking? The Great Dan Gable would lose his mind if he saw this. Bodyweight Training is extremely powerful when implemented properly. … [Read more...]
Dumbbell Complex Conditioning for ANIMALS
Complexes are downright brutal. I use them with barbells, dumbbells, sandbags and kettlebells. You can use them with stones as well. The bottom line is don't be afraid to go heavy with complexes either. They put on muscle AND improve conditioning, but, most people fear them because they are NASTY once you get going with them. Your muscles feel like they're going to explode and your grip gets a helluva workout from the constant movement of the barbell in your hands. Check out this video of … [Read more...]
