Got a great question today, one that applies to everyone, NOT just the ladies: QUESTION: So Zach... Sounds like an Xcellent workout here is a question for you. I am a 52 year young female fitness trainer..... I LOVE the USC training ... I lay here with ice on my knees & hip after an intense KB sandbag & plyo bootcamp I participated in... How can I keep up with Kids 10,20 ,30 years younger and should I continue training this way ??? By the way, this intense working out is really … [Read more...]
Making me cry…doing what you love….
Last night my wife and I rented the movie, 'The Bucket List' from DirecTV. It hit me hard, REALLY hard, and of course, had me thinking like crazy about a lot of things. The list is on now :) But, it reminded me of a person near and dear to my heart, someone who made the biggest difference in my business, and, if it were not for him, there's a good chance I wouldn't be writing this. I would likely still be satisified doing what I used to do, and only training athletes here and there on the side, … [Read more...]
Freak Grip Strength and Conditioning
I have always been a BIG fan of grip strength. I have never met someone with strong hands and a weak body. It NEVER works. Strongs hands = strong man, period! In the world of grip, you know of Smitty and Jedd from The Diesel Crew and John Brookfield who has been featured on the Iron Mind web site for years and has also created a system of training called Battling Ropes (http://powerropes.com). I have a 60' Battling Rope at The Underground Strength Gym and man does this thing kick your ass up … [Read more...]
Another Day in the Office
No fancy chair for me, no pretty desk to hide behind, only the challenge to lead from the front. Is it really a challenge, or, is it a choice? ONLY You decide! In Strength, --Z-- P.S. - This style of training is not for everyone. The psyche certainly pushed everyone harder, as we competed against one another. Technique loosened up a bit and insanity certainly jumped up more than a few nothces. It's time you began taking part in the Underground movement. Do it here: The Underground … [Read more...]
Banging heads with Beasts
This morning I was drinking my morning shake, which I have 2 - 3 mornings out of the week, other days, I go with "real" food. My wife asked me if I was going to work out today, I told her I would, after cranking out some computer work, I planned on hitting the backyard for some kettlebell training, and then she asked if the gym was open. Indeed it was, but only for select few who were invited to train on Saturdays in preparation for Joe DeFranco's strongman contest. Joe never invited … [Read more...]
Muscle Building Formula: Build Strength = Build (A Lot) More Muscle
The amount of complicated BS training is getting out of control. The truth is, it is simple. And, NOT easy. It also takes time. Not months, but YEARS of work. The formula to gaining size? It starts with STRENGTH. If you want to get BIG, then you better plan on getting stronger, period. Heavy weights, low to moderate reps, some high rep sets for finishers, lots of quality food, quality rest, basics, basics, basics. I know, ground breaking, right? Yet on the regular, so many … [Read more...]
He was a freak and had freakish training methods
He walked through waist high water for over an hour, lifting his legs out of the water on each step to develop work capacity. He would snatch throw a 220 lb. barbell for 100 reps backwards over his head as a warm up to his olympic lifting workouts. He trained in solitude. He trained in training hall or his backyard. There were times he would train with a barbell in the water as well, diving under and emerging seconds later with the barbell ripped through the water into a power … [Read more...]
333 | Interview With Louie Simmons of Westside Barbell Club: Lessons from The Westside Barbell Book of Methods
STRONG Life Podcast ep 333 This is a throwback interview I did with Louie Simmons, back in 2008. Back then, there were NO podcasts. I was using a landline to record these audio interviews for https://UndergroundStrengthCoach.com This was done after Louie released his book, The Westside Barbell Book of Methods. I devoured that book in NO time and could NOT put it down. … [Read more...]
Who remembers this BEAST?
This is the guy who was putting the boxing world on it's rear when he was a young kid. At age 19 he was knocking out the best of the best. He trained in a secluded area in up state New York - he had the eye of the tiger. His physique was built like a mack truck, thick and solid. His legs were built like tree trunks, and all his jumping rope certainly helped. Juming rope might be the most primitive form of exercise with such a simple tool, but remember, almost all movement begins with the feet. … [Read more...]
Off he goes
One of my athletes is heading off to Pa. for a good month for some family vacation time. They have a place "in the woods", so he was very worried about missing his workouts. I told him about what we used to do in my back yard, and how powerful the underground strength training was when we first began, it was truly shocking! We had two tree logs, a climbing rope, some stones, a few sledge hammers and that's it! Our wrestlers began with a 10 minute circuit of max rounds of this workout: 1) log … [Read more...]
