There are times when you think you're training hard. Soon, someone else comes along and pushed you outside your comfort zone. Suddenly you're not as strong, as fast or as tough as you thought you were. It's happened to me and still does to this very day. But, this is why I do it. I need to keep my edge, I FEAR losing it. There are ALWAYS holes in your armor. I've been exposed to plenty of new methods lately and some of them have busted me up. Some are me simply going back to where I … [Read more...]
Underground Bodyweight Workout Challenge
I've been to a LOT of wrestling clubs and worked with a LOT of wrestling teams. I used to be shocked and even angered seeing how wrestlers were NOT performing ONE good push up: full range of motion, neck and entire body aligned, tight abs.... How the hell can a wrestler be unable to perform the bread and butter basic exercise that EVERY athlete should be cranking? The Great Dan Gable would lose his mind if he saw this. Bodyweight Training is extremely powerful when implemented properly. … [Read more...]
21 Stories in 21 Years
After lifting for 21 years and having gone through quite the gamut of training methods, training tools, near death experiences and plenty of pain and pleasure mixed in I have learned quite a lot.... A lot in regards to training AND life through these 2 decades. 1) I used to do my homework in the gym. I just wanted to be amongst the weights. If I opened one of my books in the classroom you would find FLEX magazine inside the book. I couldn't get my mind off lifting and being in the gym. 2) … [Read more...]
Dumbbell Complex Conditioning for ANIMALS
Complexes are downright brutal. I use them with barbells, dumbbells, sandbags and kettlebells. You can use them with stones as well. The bottom line is don't be afraid to go heavy with complexes either. They put on muscle AND improve conditioning, but, most people fear them because they are NASTY once you get going with them. Your muscles feel like they're going to explode and your grip gets a helluva workout from the constant movement of the barbell in your hands. Check out this video of … [Read more...]
Underground Playground Assault + Building Bad MFers
It was a Friday morning and I was supposed to train 4 wrestlers inside a wrestling club where I've got a small Underground Strength Club going down. The doors were locked. It was time for Plan B. This is what I thrive on: shitty conditions, no equipment, no gym..... this is how I began and this is where I was, all over again, 8 years later. I was in my element and a day like this brought me back to my roots. You gotta go back to your roots no matter what you do or where you are in life. … [Read more...]

Density Training, Mental Toughness and BadAss Workouts
When I first heard about Density Workouts is when Coach Ethan Reeve was describing his very own workouts from when he was a college wrestler back in the 70s. He would crank intense workouts for 20 minutes, going for maximum rounds. The workouts would give an ass whoopin' to ALL of us. The Rutgers Wrestling Team is learning ALL about these Density Workouts as we crank many of our workouts based on time. It forces you to push the pace, minimize rest and in turn, mental toughness improves along … [Read more...]
Overhead Lifting Mayhem & Shoulder Health
I have a SERIOUS passion for all types of lifting, but, I especially LOVE throwing weights overhead, ALL types of weights. Remember, I'm a SOUL Lifter, rules need NOT apply. Discriminate against NOTHING that makes you stronger. In this Video I timed myself against an array of training tools to clean and press overhead. The variety keeps you from getting bored and each overhead press is slightly different than the next. Your mind must stay focused to handle the details of each … [Read more...]
The Underground Kettlebell Assault
What can I say, I LOVE Kettlebell training. I've loved them since the day I started ripping into them in my bare bones garage when I first started the creation of The Underground Strength Gym. Every Kettlebell workout kicked my ass and pushed me unlike any other training tool I ever used. I love the fact that you can use Kettlebells in countless ways: throw them, press, row, squat, push and pull. Use one or two kettlebells, take them with you for a workout at the park, your backyard, … [Read more...]
Train Like a Gorilla, Eat Like a Gorilla
I'm droppin' some vids from my new web site, Get Wrestling Strength, but I bet you can learn a thing or two about training regardless of whether or not you wrestle. We walk around on our feet ALL freakin' day, why not use the hands instead? It's been a staple of my own training and how I train my athletes for MANY years now. It improves grip strength, overall upper body strength, shoulder stability and trunk / ab strength & stability. Look at Gymnasts, they perform countless … [Read more...]
