-- Strength Today VS Strength of Yesterday -- When I was a teenager, strength was measured in numbers. Numbers on the bar. That's all. Then, when I reached my 20s, I began viewing strength differently. I attached strength to more than just the numbers I was lifting. I measured my strength in pain tolerance, in making training partners quit and in going that extra step just when I thought I should stop. … [Read more...]
You Can’t Fake STRONG
I'm coming off a high after last weekend's USC Cert + Travis Mash's Learn 2 Lift Seminar. We blend our 2 methods together because it all blends perfectly. It's a combination of our almost 60 years of combined training knowledge. I think that makes us Senior Citizens of STRENGTH.... kinda. The Blending of.... Do You Even Train HARD, Bro!?!?
Do you even sweat, bro? I will train HARD with anything. I don't care if it's at my gym, a globo gym or a hotel gym. Last Friday I was speaking at Ryan Lee's Freedym Event. I was pretty tired but I KNEW that if I could crush a morning training session inside the posh hotel gym, I would end up crushing my presentation that afternoon. There is a sense of power and strength one feels when they do the thing that could have been skipped with some poor, lame excuse. I didn't care what was in the … [Read more...]
What To Do When You Don’t Feel Like Doing!?
Don't be shocked when you read this. We're ALL human. There is weakness in ALL of us. In my mind, weakness is evil, so it pisses me off and inspires me into action. It's 8:15 PM on a Monday night. My gym is over 90 degrees and my energy has been put towards MANY things: Waking up at 5 AM to do work on the beautiful interwebs. Playing Tennis with my kids and losing against my 9 year old daughter (Truth) Driving 45 minutes to the gym and 45 minutes lies ahead of me to get home I'm … [Read more...]
Learn to Make The Rep Or DIE
I don't recall where I read or heard about the story, but, I feel like it was from Marty Gallagher. The crew is getting psyched up, climbing higher and higher on their squats. 500 lbs. 600. 700. 800 + lbs. The lifter yells at the crew..... … [Read more...]
NO Time To Train = NO Such Thing
We've all heard the saying, "I've got no time....." We all know, there is truly no such excuse. We make time for what's important and make excuses for what is not. There are many days I find myself in a time crunch, especially this Summer as I have my kids in various sports camps and I am driving here and there and then attacking my business and day to day activities. Some would advise to wake up earlier and get the training in but when you're a working family, you can't go and leave an … [Read more...]
Hotel Gyms, Prison Strength Equipment & Inspiration
I heard the stories of this gym. Supposedly, it was quite the sight to see. At least that's what everyone was saying, so naturally, I HAD to see if there was A Gym God inside a hotel. It was Saturday around 10 AM and Marty Gallagher has just finished his presentation. I was fired UP and sitting down was the last thing my mind and body would dare conform to do. I changed into my gym shorts and hit the elevator to the 6th floor. What I saw was beautiful..... … [Read more...]
I Changed My Mind: REAL World Strength AND Bodybuilding
It must have been 6 years ago or so, I remember the moment quite clearly. We were outside The Underground Strength Gym, the athletes were hitting their finishers and training like farm boys. Back and forth they went pushing and pulling sleds, carrying the anvil, the atlas stone, dumbbells, kettlebells and sandbags. A BIG bodybuilder and his skinny friend began approaching. The bodybuilder was jacked. His friend looked like a typical high school kid weighing about 160 lbs or so. The … [Read more...]
How to Get STRONGER & TOUGHER Training Under Fatigue (Pre Exhaust Method)
I find myself more and more returning to methods I used in the 90s. Maybe it's my age, both in biological terms and training age terms. Spending all these years under the bar since 1989 I am still excited to train and finding new ways to keep getting better. I don't want to make the mistake I've seen others make, which is resisting change. I remember even as a young teen bodybuilder how others weren't making any progress year after year and I remember exactly why: - They didn't attempt to get … [Read more...]
