Franco Columbu was a BEAST when it came to pull ups. He cranked them from all angles AND added weight to them as well. High reps AND low reps. Reminds me of my OLD Bodybuilding training partner.... We almost always began our workouts with chins and progressed to weighted chins. He would build up to chin ups with THREE 45 lb plates strapped to a weight belt. His back was THICK! It freaked people out! Heavy Chins and HEAVY barbell rows were his ticket. Back to the legend of Franco … [Read more...]
Agile, Mobile and Hostile
Your Mission: Agile, Mobile & Hostile.... The REAL Men HAD it back in the day, The Golden Era & Old School times... Why were the Agile, Mobile & Hostile? How did they achieve the ultimate in performance AND appearance? Their approach was simple yet challenging.... They concentrated on a blend of strength, muscle building, raw power and athleticism. It wasn't enough to be able to squat, bench or deadlift heavy. NO, Sir, these men blended gymnastics, strongman training, feats of … [Read more...]
Lessons From Golden Era Bodyweight Bodybuilding Workouts & Marvin Eder
This post was inspired from my time spent reading the old books of bodybuilding where the greats from the 50s, 60s and 70s spoke often about all the high rep bodyweight training they did. Hundreds of sit ups and crunches every training session. 100 Pull Ups on back day / back workouts. 100 Push Ups for the warm up. These men from back in the day had physiques that were carved from stone. They had what many call today as "functional strength". Many of these men worked manual labor jobs by … [Read more...]
Bodyweight Workout For Size & Strength Using The “Ladder Technique”
I've spoken often about using the "ladder technique" with my Bodyweight Bodybuilding training course, but also with Kettlebell Workouts and sometimes with deadlifts as well and had great success. The ladder technique is a powerful way to increase your strength, pack on muscle and if used with an aggressive pace, you will also improve cardio and stimulate fat loss. Here's how I train when using ladders with bodyweight exercises: … [Read more...]
2 Things Every Man Should Do
As much as I LOVE bodyweight training I still use the deadlift and the squat in some form of another with added weight. When I bail on deadlifts and squats my legs get WEAK, and as a man, I have NO room for weakness. The squats and deads help me run faster and jump higher. Running is NOT my forte so anything that helps with my runs is a plus in my book. Even if you don't squat or deadlift till your eye balls pop out of your head, that's fine, the main thing is that you do "The Thing". In Pavel's … [Read more...]
Hunting for a Playground Workout – The End?
I got LUCKY. I Found myself a GREAT playground, still in need of finding pull up bars and dip bars that are up HIGH so my feet don't drag on the ground. I've seen these "advanced playgrounds" in videos outside of the states & in the suburbs of NYC, but I fear there is a conspiracy to keep people weak by removing playgrounds all around the country. We filmed a TON of footage at this playground for the new Bodyweight Training Course. Now, although I've been cranking LOTS of bodyweight … [Read more...]
Hunting for a Playground Workout
Playground workouts ALL day.... gotta get after it if you wanna become agile, mobile and hostile... On this day I hunted for bodyweight workouts at playgrounds at 3 different locations. This is the 2nd playground workout, more to come. Question for You: When you hit the playgrounds for your bodyweight workouts, do you train by feel, like a Soul Lifter, or do you have a planned workout? Peace --Z-- PS: Make sure you sign up for my Top 5 Bodyweight exercises for packing on muscle. To get my … [Read more...]
The Power Behind Bodyweight Bodybuilding Playground Workouts
I am getting more and MORE hyped on Bodyweight Training. I feel GREAT attacking the calisthenics and with warmer weather especially, it is perfect for training outdoors to rejuvenate mind, body & spirit. The cold is not to be feared either, the Russian athletes often trained outdoors for a warm up and fresh air on a regular basis. You can see it in the Video below as well. I have been hunting for better playgrounds all around NJ since 2002. Sometimes I bring a kettlebell and mix the … [Read more...]
The Power of Deadlifts and Dips
Many say that deadlifts will wreck your back.... True, if you do them wrong. Many say dips will wreck your shoulders.... True, if you do them wrong. … [Read more...]
BRUTAL Bodyweight, Sandbags & Kettlebell Workout
I often find myself looking for a tough workout. Something to give me a good ol' gut check. My fear of becoming "normal" or "just like everybody else" worries me BIG time. On this particular day I got to my Underground Strength Gym nice and early to test my mind and body. … [Read more...]
