Training young athletes is my passion. I LOVE helping skinny, weak kids go from Boy to BEAST..... not just physically, but mentally as well. But, I feel HORRIBLE for the athletes who are forced to train with a Coach who has NO clue as to WHAT the hell to do with regards to Safe AND Effective training. Some Coaches do NOT want to learn. They use their EGO to control the kids and force them into training in shitty conditions. When you have a Coach who is hungry to learn, that is when athletes … [Read more...]
Strong, Slow & USELESS | The Problem with Modified Powerlifting for Training Athletes
I've spoken at length regarding my "Strong & Useless" rants when I see athletes who can set the records on the weight room wall but they can't last through a sports practice or they're always "hurt" but not injured. I want to share with you a few tips that you can use with your workouts or with athletes you train that will have you feeling infinitely better in a very short time. Less joint strains, more athleticism and overall, more dangerous in your sport or work related field. I no … [Read more...]
35 Life & Lifting Lessons
Holy S**t! In a few short weeks I'll be 36. Time goes fast. TOO Fast. Here's some stories and lessons I've learned along the way & hopefully you're not too cool to learn from some of these. Anyway, for no reason whatsoever I thought it would be legit to have a pic of Dr. Ken training with an empty bomb to remind you to push the limits :) … [Read more...]
The BIG Reasons Behind Bodyweight Training for Athletes
Yesterday I exchanged text messages with a friend of mine who has been lifting for 20+ years. He was talking about how he can relate to everything I went through as we've been both training hard and heavy for well over 2 decades. The nagging injuries, the strange pains in our feet, injuries from simple daily tasks like walking down the stairs in the morning. Today, we laugh at these injuries because back in the day we would NEVER have guessed that being so strong could contribute to … [Read more...]
Don’t Get Stuck Being Strong AND Useless
In a recent interview I was listening to between Mike Robertson and NFL Strength Coach Joe "House" Kenn, Joe was asked an interesting question. He was asked what he would like to see more of AND what he wishes he focused on in his younger years. His answer was...... MORE Bodyweight Training, More Playground Workouts and the ability to Move your Own Bodyweight. I've personally deadlifted over 500 lbs, squatted 455 for reps, benched over 300 lbs and at 220 lbs can perform 25 pull ups … [Read more...]
Are You Stronger Than an Idiot aka Learning From Injuries?
Time to lay down the law on those who listen and especially those who are "good enough" and only listen to a select few. Remember, to achieve greater success you must acquire the mindset of "always a white belt". The Learning NEVER ends. I've been there and done that & it led to a road called injured in a town called weakness. This past week, I cranked 4 workouts this week, ALL of them stronger than the week before. Progress is running smoother than ever. Mind you, I NEVER … [Read more...]
The TRUTH About Bodyweight Workouts
Franco Columbu was a BEAST when it came to pull ups. He cranked them from all angles AND added weight to them as well. High reps AND low reps. Reminds me of my OLD Bodybuilding training partner.... We almost always began our workouts with chins and progressed to weighted chins. He would build up to chin ups with THREE 45 lb plates strapped to a weight belt. His back was THICK! It freaked people out! Heavy Chins and HEAVY barbell rows were his ticket. Back to the legend of Franco … [Read more...]
Bodyweight Workout For Size & Strength Using The “Ladder Technique”
I've spoken often about using the "ladder technique" with my Bodyweight Bodybuilding training course, but also with Kettlebell Workouts and sometimes with deadlifts as well and had great success. The ladder technique is a powerful way to increase your strength, pack on muscle and if used with an aggressive pace, you will also improve cardio and stimulate fat loss. Here's how I train when using ladders with bodyweight exercises: … [Read more...]
Hunting for a Playground Workout – The End?
I got LUCKY. I Found myself a GREAT playground, still in need of finding pull up bars and dip bars that are up HIGH so my feet don't drag on the ground. I've seen these "advanced playgrounds" in videos outside of the states & in the suburbs of NYC, but I fear there is a conspiracy to keep people weak by removing playgrounds all around the country. We filmed a TON of footage at this playground for the new Bodyweight Training Course. Now, although I've been cranking LOTS of bodyweight … [Read more...]
The Power Behind Bodyweight Bodybuilding Playground Workouts
I am getting more and MORE hyped on Bodyweight Training. I feel GREAT attacking the calisthenics and with warmer weather especially, it is perfect for training outdoors to rejuvenate mind, body & spirit. The cold is not to be feared either, the Russian athletes often trained outdoors for a warm up and fresh air on a regular basis. You can see it in the Video below as well. I have been hunting for better playgrounds all around NJ since 2002. Sometimes I bring a kettlebell and mix the … [Read more...]
