I remember my earliest training partners..... They were a few local guys a bit older than me and they would complain about one another behind each others back. Excuses were running rampant...... They would complain that they only could train with me. They NEEDED my motivation, they told me. But now I know. I KNOW much, much better, some 25 years later. Excuses Suck. NO Excuse is truly valid. The only thing you NEED to do is to be able to count on YOU. Punch your excuses in the face. And … [Read more...]
QnA: Daily Calisthenics, When to “Cut” & Defining STRENGTH
Original Photo & Story HERE This was a QnA session BUT heavily prefaced by an explanation of "What It Takes", an expansion of the recent "What It Takes" Blog Post..... I suggest you read that blog post because until you understand "What It Takes" the knowledge you acquire means nothing & will amount to nothing. The BIG missing link that is always swept under the rug is the emphasis on hard work, smart work, dedication, consistency & intensity model of training. I love these … [Read more...]
What It Takes. MANY Talk About It. Few ARE About It.
Above, The LAST Crew for The USC Cert. I Gifted 2 of My Favorite Books / Influencers: Gary Vaynerchuk & Steven Pressfield. I was 13 years old. It was the Summer before entering high school. My friends weren't doing what I was doing. My older brother convinced me to join the wrestling team as a freshman. I didn't really know what I was in for. - The Intensity - The Mental Toughness - The Desire to Fight - Learning How to Harness my Fear Into Strength These were … [Read more...]
Take Your Excellence & SHOVE IT: The Strength Coach Standard
I had some interesting conversations recently with Strength Coaches. Conversations that run the spectrum from "Holy sh*t, I can't believe that happened....", to "He now trains people in his garage & texts our clients, telling them to come train with him...." These random thoughts that I'm going to talk about really came to my mind after I saw my close friend & world renown Coach, Travis Mash talking about how he is turning his weightlifting team into a non profit. I LOVE that … [Read more...]
Why The World Would Be Different If I Never Wrestled
I wonder if the world would be different in my eyes if I never wrestled? My older brother told me "It's the most awesome sport!" I was in 8th grade at the time and he was a sophomore in high school. Of course, I wish my parents knew this to get us all involved in wrestling much earlier. My older brother started wrestling his sophomore year in high school and I began my freshman year. My younger brother began in 1st grade. Before I rant, I want to preface this and say that NOT all wrestlers … [Read more...]
Why That Short Cut Is Killing Your Success
This Blog Post is gonna get intense. Why so intense? Because I don't accept or encourage mediocrity. Mediocrity sucks. I can't stand it. Even more so, I get pissed off how passionate people get reprimanded, lose their jobs, etc while mediocre people and even worst than mediocre people get jobs and get accepted into society. I would rather be hated and get fired from any job then to settle for mediocrity. Success requires intensity, dedication, passion, commitment, durability … [Read more...]

There are some slight audio skips in this episode so next time I will get back to straight audio recording. Regardless, … [Read more...]
How Strength & Conditioning Can Change Or Save Your LIFE
Guest Post by Shawn Charlebois, CUSC L1 Somebody much smarter than me once said “We Are What We Repeatedly Do”. I don’t know about you but I want to be strong. I did a lot of growing up in jail. My real education took place between the block walls of Central North Correctional Center. I did 8 years inside and during that time I got to do a few critical things: KNOW MYSELF KNOW WHAT I STAND FOR BE CONSISTENT WITH MY EFFORTS & CHARACTER These 3 key factors are the building … [Read more...]
Blending Calisthenics with Strongman, Powerlifting & Olympic Weightlifting
My buddy and I used to hunt the area for the best playgrounds. We looked for parallel bars and pull up bars specifically. These were gems. Some schools removed their entire playground if one child fell and got injured. So this was not as easy to find as it sounds. The back of my truck usually had a sandbag, a few Kettlebells and maybe a sled or prowler. Those training sessions were powerful and effective. They were TOUGH. Now, being in my 40s, I find that more calisthenics and … [Read more...]
5 Common Training / Program Design Mistakes of Athletes & Coaches
In my recent discussion on training mistakes and program design with Josh Bryant we spoke honestly and openly about our own mistakes and what we see in others that are also commonplace. If you're reading this article it means you want to learn and that is KEY. That obviously brings me to Mistake # 1: You can NEVER STOP learning. You must learn by doing the work yourself be it in training and / or coaching. Learn through books, podcasts, seminars and more. If you are out there … [Read more...]
