This blog post will evolve as I evolve but for now, I am standing my ground on something I have picked up on tremendously over the past few years. I've learned this when it comes to understanding why some athletes are tough and competitive while others couldn't care less if they lost / lose over and over again. After working with over 1,000 athletes at The Underground Strength Gym, I've come across kids who simply do NOT care. They will cancel workouts 5 minutes before their schedule, … [Read more...]

Developing A TOUGH Mindset for Greater Success In ALL Areas Of Life
Last Thursday after shoulder surgery I was starting to act like an a--hole. My arm was completely shut down and numb from the anesthesia nerve block and The Doc told me I would not have the ability to move my left arm for about 24 hrs. No problem, right? It was amazing how I allowed my mind to crumble for a few moments as I began to complain about how my sling is choking my neck and other trivial, pathetic things. I needed someone to punch me in the face so I could wake up and realize that … [Read more...]
Why I Chase The Challenge VS Running From Challenges
I probably hated my Coaches at the time.... Called them names.... Got angry with them.... That was high school. Today, all I do is say "Thank you" for how hard they pushed me. They broke me down and built me into who I am today. From my knee injuries, to a broken nose, a torn rotator cuff.... I can trace back almost all of my success today to the lessons learned through the tough times in my high school wrestling room from 1989 - 1993. You must FEAR the comfort..... … [Read more...]
QnA: Football Strength & Conditioning
In a world where blaming others and lack of responsibility is running rampant, I want to turn the page for a moment. I am asked often about "sports specific training" and running 2 gyms and listening to parents and athletes get duped has me questioning when the bull shit will end. Parents talk to me about "football specific workouts" or "baseball specific workouts"..... Is squatting, deadlifting, throwing objects, jumping, sprinting, carrying and lunging NOT specific? The development of a … [Read more...]
Winning Is MORE Important Than Being Politically Correct
Above, Thanksgiving Morning at The Edison, NJ Underground Strength Gym. No Apologies for Having High Expectations for These Athletes In Sports AND In Life. _________ Success is NOT an accident. The encouragement to "outwork the competition" is no longer OK. It is not politically correct. Hard work will offend people, even if they don't actually do the work, they are offended when you tell the truth and say, "You're lazy, work harder and stop sucking." This is the new era where people are … [Read more...]
Don’t Play The Age Card & My 40th Birthday Workout
I was on the phone with my buddy, AJ Roberts, a former world record holder in Powerlifting while he was a member at Westside Barbell, aka The Strongest Gym in the World. We were talking training, life, business, the usual..... We got to the training talk and I mentioned something about how I feel and he said, "Oh man, you're already playing that age card!" He was right. I was 38 or 39 at the time and I made up some poor excuse about training, how I feel because of my age and then proceeded … [Read more...]
Former Navy SEAL, Jake Zweig On Dominating LIFE, Pursuing Excellence & Being Relentless

Jake's long list of accomplishments go on and on, yet he's STILL living life full steam ahead and pursuing excellence. How? Why? Why not kick back on the couch and talk about the "good ol' days"? Why not Talk about the TV shows you've been on and be satisfied? Jake shares his story from his upbringing as a kid all the way to his current days … [Read more...]
Small Victories for Mental Toughness
"Just find an excuse to WIN." When I want to build my mental toughness a mere extra 1%, I don't view the big goal, I take it 1 small step at a time. If I'm running, just get to the next telephone pole.... If I'm hitting a set of 20 rep squats, just get to 8, then 10, then 12.... When I get to 20.... I do 1 more, a few more times. It all adds up and these small victories build upon themselves, building momentum and in turn, greater mental toughness. During a recent training session with 1 of … [Read more...]
