Those old strength and health magazines had it right. They encouraged barbell lifting; Bodybuilding, Powerlifting and Olympic Weightlifting. They encouraged body control through the use of calisthenics, hand balancing and basic gymnastic drills. The physiques not only looked strong, they WERE strong AND athletic. You don't see the bodybuilders of today performing hand balancing or acrobatics. Heck, you don't see bodybuilders jumping. I often say I was born at the wrong time. I … [Read more...]

STRENGTH Lessons From 1957 & The 90s
Magazine above from 1957, I'd say that Dude is pretty STRONG. What do you think he did in training? I am sure he didn't have many options in the 50s. A barbell, maybe a few dumbbells? Calisthenics and running, swimming and overall hard training and healthy, strong eating. I did some research and "Tarzan" Jacobs was a Mr. Universe runner up and was also a pro wrestler in the 60s and 70s. They described Jacobs as "enormously strong". … [Read more...]

WHY You MUST Be Able To Figure Things Out On Your OWN
Do this, Do that. Rest this long, do x sets, x reps, bla bla bla. If you always have someone telling you what to do, how to do it, when to do...... You will never succeed in anything. You have to figure things out on your own. You must be willing to experiment, to make mistakes and most of all, to fight back and learn to do things better. Every morning of a holiday I like to hold Holiday morning training sessions at The Underground Strength Gym. You can see some OLD videos below and … [Read more...]
Training to Always Be Ready VS “I Have to Get Ready”
I've been harping on a topic I call "Always Be Ready" for many years now. I began hearing the phrase I have to get ready from people who were interested in training at The Underground Strength Gym many years ago. They would come in with a friend or do a trial and then I'd hear that weak phrase, I have to get ready...... I was thinking to myself, who the hell says that? Why not just be relentless and attack NOW!!?? Who shows up for a trial workout and then doesn't want to ATTACK NOW? … [Read more...]
