14 Powerful High School Strength & Conditioning Tips
There's a lot of confusion out there regarding how high school athletes should be training and in this article I'm going to clear a lot of the BS up. For the highly motivated you can and should invest in your knowledge through my Encyclopedia of Underground Strength & Conditioning and through my 16 week online program, High School STRONG. You might be angry already saying, "WTF Zach, first thing you do is tell me to buy something!!!???" My answer: NO. The First thing I tell you to do is … [Read more...]
Training Around Injuries VS Making Excuses
What did I do 2 days after shoulder surgery? I went straight to my gym. I set up a mini band and worked BOTH arms, even my arm that was wrapped up and in a few stitches. The other option? Sit home. Sit on the couch. Watch TV. Feel sorry for myself, crying "boohoo, someone help me...." It doesn't work that way. Help yourself. If you're a hard charging lifter, athlete or a Strength Coach, pay attention.... … [Read more...]
QnA: Daily Calisthenics, When to “Cut” & Defining STRENGTH
Original Photo & Story HERE This was a QnA session BUT heavily prefaced by an explanation of "What It Takes", an expansion of the recent "What It Takes" Blog Post..... I suggest you read that blog post because until you understand "What It Takes" the knowledge you acquire means nothing & will amount to nothing. The BIG missing link that is always swept under the rug is the emphasis on hard work, smart work, dedication, consistency & intensity model of training. I love these … [Read more...]
Blending Calisthenics with Strongman, Powerlifting & Olympic Weightlifting
My buddy and I used to hunt the area for the best playgrounds. We looked for parallel bars and pull up bars specifically. These were gems. Some schools removed their entire playground if one child fell and got injured. So this was not as easy to find as it sounds. The back of my truck usually had a sandbag, a few Kettlebells and maybe a sled or prowler. Those training sessions were powerful and effective. They were TOUGH. Now, being in my 40s, I find that more calisthenics and … [Read more...]

Bigger, Stronger & Faster In A Garage Gym
When schools or individuals are worried about turf instead of their grass field, a beautiful weight room instead of the old dungeon weight room and sophisticated X, Y, Z ........ They are worried about the WRONG things. The TRUTH is that fancy and pretty equipment don't mean a thing unless the training and technique is dialed in. GREAT Coaches & a GREAT Environment Builds GREAT athletes, it's NOT the equipment. This journey began for me in my early teenage years. I quickly learned … [Read more...]

Training The Multi Sport Athlete
I received an e mail recently from a multi sport athlete who competes in Football and Wrestling. This is a tough stretch as Football begins mid August and rolls straight into Wrestling season which begins on Thanksgiving. Depending on how successful you are, Wrestling season can end anywhere from mid February to the first weekend in March. All in all, we're looking at approx. 7 months of in season time. Not only is this a long stretch of time but there are MANY other factors that I add up and … [Read more...]
When Can A Man STOP Training?
The temp was 29 degrees, Winter had finally set in. I was up that morning at 6 AM, took care of the wife and kids and then drove to The Underground Strength Gym of Manasquan, NJ. I cranked the heat for 10 minutes, no longer. I don't wanna spoil myself with a cozy gym. F--K that. I got warmed up and got to work. Some smashing on the rumble roller. Some light band work for the upper body and lower body. I had been thinking of this workout since Sunday Morning, some 24 hrs prior. As I was … [Read more...]
