STRONG Life Podcast Ep. 221 In this episode I discuss my stance on having NO time for the BS Fads & Gimmicks in Strength & Conditioning along with being in the "business" of Changing Lives as a Strength Coach. I get a little emotional in this episode but I decided to just leave it, no editing, raw and uncut. Ever since I began my full time journey (aka obsession) into the field of Strength & Conditioning there have been fads, gimmicks and buzz words. In the early 2000s it … [Read more...]
Getting Back to the Bells’ & Bodyweight Training + Donnie Thompson (SuperD) Inspiration
Here and there I catch myself getting away from training that is more Physical Culture based and end up chasing numbers. Now, there is NOTHING wrong with being Strong. But something was missing for me. I wanted to feel the toughness and challenge of working with circuits / complexes of Kettlebells, Fat Bell, Center Mass Bells. With my shoulder injury some years ago, I limit the overhead work but testing Donnie Thompson's Bow Tie made everything feel fine! … [Read more...]
Why Our Youth (Middle & High School Athletes) NEED Great Strength & Conditioning
It's amazing to look back to my early days of training athletes from my garage compared to today. The BIG shocker is how much knowledge I've gained since 2002 when I REALLY began my journey as a Strength Coach. Back then, it was ALL about winning. How can I help this athlete get a D1 Football scholarship? How can I help this wrestler win a state title? Until I began paying closer attention to the deeper details such as..... … [Read more...]

Training to Always Be Ready VS “I Have to Get Ready”
I've been harping on a topic I call "Always Be Ready" for many years now. I began hearing the phrase I have to get ready from people who were interested in training at The Underground Strength Gym many years ago. They would come in with a friend or do a trial and then I'd hear that weak phrase, I have to get ready...... I was thinking to myself, who the hell says that? Why not just be relentless and attack NOW!!?? Who shows up for a trial workout and then doesn't want to ATTACK NOW? … [Read more...]
5 SQUAT Variations You Should Be Doing
I've been squatting since age 13. I'm 5'10" and according to the fallacy, I should be 5'1" since squats "stunt your growth." I've done 50 sets of Squats in a day and didn't get rhabdo or need to go to the hospital. I've squatted 315 for 22 reps on my 22nd birthday and squatted 225 for 50 reps. Squats are good for the body AND the soul. But, as we get older and accumulate mileage of iron on the body, it's important to switch up those Squats. Use variations of the squat to work … [Read more...]
5 Tips To Be STRONG, Successful & Awesome
I'm fired up as I'm hitting the road to drive down to North Carolina tomorrow. Travis Mash and I will be crushing our seminar together and the next one will be here in NJ. My drive is going to be about 9 hours. And when I get to think about driving, I get to think about how many excuse makers there are. I question where they acquire this attitude of convenience over excellence. I've held seminars where I flew 4, 5 + hours and people within 45 minutes driving said, "Let me know when you're … [Read more...]
When A Man STOPS Being DANGEROUS
I was 18 years old and it was the Summer of 94'. The training and advice I learned back then has stuck with me and shaped my actions dramatically. Why? Because these lessons were forged into my mind and body through TOUGH times. That which is easy will not change you. It's that simple. I had gone through some intense and awesome training that Summer while in Israel. 2 workouts a day, 6 days a week. My training partners were "crazy" but this was our "normal". Joe was training to become a Navy … [Read more...]
