I was training with my old buddy and training partner last week and we started ranting about how much things have changed. When my buddy and I began training together on the regular, he was a teenager and I was 22. My mind drifted to how things used to be and I'm sure we sounded like crank old men yet I am 45 and my buddy is 40. The world is changing and if you can't see it then you're lining yourself up to be in trouble. Watch this Video as I share what needs to happen in this world..... … [Read more...]

Mid Summer Sale
I hope your training is kicking ass! I gotta tell you, my training is going great. The knee is feeling better and my energy is sky high. Even when The Underground Strength Gym has temps of 90 or 94 degrees, I am energized when I train. I am confused how the kids of today are so tired after training or doing little things like mowing the lawn. Strength is invigorating! Now that August is upon us, it reminds me how the Summer was always a GREAT time to train. I would ride my … [Read more...]
Inside Mike Mentzer’s Heavy Duty Book & Training Methods
I came across Mike Mentzer's training methods as a kid. In fact, if memory serves me properly, I began reading about Mike Mentzer around age 11. You see, I would read my older brother's bodybuilding books and magazines for 2 years before I actually began training. I began training in June of 1989 but leading up to that point, I would dabble in lifting the weights my brother had in his room. It was strange to me that I would lift weights for 2 or 3 weeks and then quit. I thought something was … [Read more...]

Old School Bodybuilding Book: Super High Intensity Bodybuilding, Ultimate Warrior & Old School Strength
It was the Winter of 1989....... I had asked my parents for a bunch of bodybuilding books that I had read multiple times already. How? I would sit on the floor at the B Dalton book store inside menlo park mall and read ALL of the books. But still, I was obsessed and had to have them all. Reading them a few times wasn't enough for me. The photos inside these books inspired me to train harder and get bigger. Little did I know or could I ever imagine that decades later, I would become … [Read more...]
John Grimek Workout + Training in Your 40s
It is always inspiring to me when I dig up my old muscle magazines from the 40s, 50s and 60s. Those photos of John Grimek, Steve Reeves, Reg Park, etc simply exude strength. These men had physiques that proved what could be done with a few hard training sessions each week, while eating a well balanced diet. Meat, Eggs, Fish, Veggies, Fruits and some carbs. Simple. Not easy. John Grimek, pictured above is in his late 40s. Look at his back. His body is a symbol of work. WORK; The very thing … [Read more...]

In this BONUS episode of The STRONG Life Podcast I am a guest on Pressing The Limits Podcast with my friend, Jon Bruney. Best Muscle Building Tips with Short Workouts
I recently had a "moment", at least I did in my own mind...... I was feeling a bit run down a few weeks ago and 1 of my training sessions was simply nothing to write home to Mom about. And so I simply thought about these time crunched training (sorry, I hate using that word "workout") sessions I've been having with my athletes at the high school that are limited to 30 minutes. One of the athletes at the end was sweating and had gotten worked quite intensely. He said to myself and the crew, … [Read more...]
Building Stronger, Tougher & Faster Athletes: Eventually, Athletes Need a Heavy Bar on their Back
Times have been changing for quite some time..... Strength training with the basics is just not "cool" anymore. "Experts" hate on squats and now we have high school kids who can barely squat bodyweight. And this COVID shutdown of gyms didn't help. When gyms were open, at least the kids were in there training. Now, parents are afraid to send kids to a gym and we have everyone locked down in a "safety bubble" You see, many athletes took it upon themselves to do NOTHING during the COVID … [Read more...]
