Passion & The Utter Disdain for Anything Less Than Excellence
When I talk about passion, it's hard to not think about Tom Platz! And of course, who was a BIG inspiration to Tom? It was none other than Dr. Squat himself, Fred Hatfield! Most people will never understand Platz's intensity (insanity) in his training but to me, it ALL makes sense. When I was a teenager and in my early 20s, before smart phones were around and the ability to film my training happened, I trained "crazy". But, I could NOT hold myself back. I couldn't stop myself. I HAD to … [Read more...]

Am I Crazy Or What?
Am I Crazy or is this normal? As a Coach, Strength Coach, Sports Coach, ANY Coach - I sometimes wonder what it would be like if I just SUCKED! You know, just come home and sit on the ol' couch after my team got destroyed in the latest game and I don't even care. I still get paid. No one bothers me because I don't bother anyone else. Kids skip practice and guess what, I don't even care. I just let it slide. My team hasn't been better than .500 since the dinosaurs roamed the earth and I don't … [Read more...]
6 STRONG Life Rules for CRUSHING Your Mondays (Or ANY Day!)
Mondays...... I clearly recall the 2 times in my life I hated Mondays. I would turn into a nasty person by Sunday afternoons as I dreaded the start of my week, doing something that was sucking the passion out of my veins. I counted down the minutes to Friday and lived for the weekends. Sounds like a "normal" guy to me from what I hear from so many nowadays. Me: Hey, How's work going? Them: Ehhhh, it's work, you know. I USED to know and I refuse to go back to those dreadful … [Read more...]
Be GREAT, Because…..
It was a Friday morning as I flew from NJ to NC and would then fly to Miami. I would be spending the weekend sharing stories of The Underground Strength Gym with plans of inspiring just 1 person. No thoughts of "world domination" as too many love to shout from the roof tops. My time in NC came and went in the blink of an eye. I spent lots of time hanging out with Jim Wendler in NC, talking life more than we spoke about lifting. Saturday evening I flew to Miami and Mike Bledsoe picked me up … [Read more...]
You Gotta Have PASSION! I Don’t Care What “Experts” Say!
I've seen some books out there and "experts" telling you NOT to follow your passion. They say it's Not what is always "best for business". SOME people CAN live without pursuing passion. They are fired up about the $$$ in their bank account first & foremost. They don't give a hoot if their following their passion. I get that. I understand. BUT, I will NEVER understand the lack of passion when it comes to being a Coach for ANY sport. You MUST have passion. If you don't believe in what you … [Read more...]
What To Do When You Don’t Feel Like Doing!?
Don't be shocked when you read this. We're ALL human. There is weakness in ALL of us. In my mind, weakness is evil, so it pisses me off and inspires me into action. It's 8:15 PM on a Monday night. My gym is over 90 degrees and my energy has been put towards MANY things: Waking up at 5 AM to do work on the beautiful interwebs. Playing Tennis with my kids and losing against my 9 year old daughter (Truth) Driving 45 minutes to the gym and 45 minutes lies ahead of me to get home I'm … [Read more...]
Finding Your True North, Death Race & Beyond Mental Toughness
He woke up every day at the same time and followed the same routine. The alarm went off at 6:07 AM and he stumbled his way down stairs to get his cup of coffee, eyes barely open and feet stumbling everywhere. Falling asleep was always stressful, knowing that the next morning he was going to that job he hated, surrounded by others who lost their passion. He questioned himself, just how long he could keep doing this. Is happiness going to wait for me until I retire? At least I've got health … [Read more...]
