I took a 1 hr drive up north yesterday to train The Blair Academy Wrestling Team, NEVER in my life have I seen an entire room of athletes who:
- Focused 110%
- Listened AND made eye contact
- NEVER slacked
Notice I did not say 99% of the athletes, I said ALL of them.
This was quite the treat and of course, teams like this are not magically created, they are built, and Coach Buxton, The Head Wrestling Coach of Blair Academy, has built all these kids into highly motivated, highly dedicated, highly focused and VERY intense athletes.
Sure, a Prep school with a long standing tradition will get motivated kids knocking on their doors, BUT, this article is NOT about excuses, it’s about telling you that we need to raise the bar for athletes (and for yourself) AND set the standards WAY higher.
The bar has been set high for The Blair Wrestling Team.
Work ethic, commitment, intensity, good manners, being humble, sportsmanship….it’s ALL part of what is taught and expected at Blair Academy.
No more excuses for why someone is better or has the advantage. It should be expected for a competitive athlete to have the eye of the tiger.
The training I put these Blair wrestlers through was intense, with lots of Gymnastics drills and jumps for the warm up to help develop kinesthetic awareness and full body power. After all the Gymnastics movements and jumping, the workout began.
The workout included rope climbing and handstand push ups, battling ropes, kettlebells and sandbags.
I was beyond impressed with the intensity and tenacity I was witnessing. I’m used to being more motivated than those I coach, which, should NEVER be the case, but in the new era of athletes being more focused on video games, texting and facebook, some simply don’t have the discipline to be different than those who surround them.
Ironically, many people say the success of Blair Wrestling has to do with recruiting. I state otherwise: It has to do with the Coaching. The expectations are very high, in addition, outside the wrestling room, the faculty also has high expectations for these kids academically.
I do the same at The Underground Strength Gym. Excellence is expected, mediocrity of any sort is looked down upon.
As a former Physical Education teacher in a school setting, I remember seeing a bunch of lazy asses in the high school setting. Why were the kids lazy? Because they were allowed to be lazy.
Don’t wanna challenge yourself and run? No problem, you can walk.
Have we gotten so scared to push people that walking is considered challenging for a high school student?
I suggest reverting back to the days of Physical Culture where gymnastics apparatuses and rope climbing were common place.
When my Dad grew up in Romania he had Physical Education 3 x week minimum, each class was 2 hours long! AWESOME!
He was not even a teenager and they had him training in Gymnastics, wrestling, throwing small shot puts and light javelins. He also played hand ball, performed sprints and ran the hurdles.
All around fitness was encouraged and trained for. Older students performed Olympic Weightlifting and more aggressively competed in each of the sports.
When people ask me what style of training I use, in a nutshell, it is a mixture of Physical Culture and Powerlifting / Strongman. It’s not enough to be strong, overall athleticism must be developed.
This is why you see our athletes running, jumping, climbing, lifting big weights, and of course, using a variety of implements to accomplish our specific goal.
It’s time Raise the Bar.
Don’t you agree?

I am a bit speechless in what to say here.
Quick Intro: David Whitley is a Kettlebell Expert and is a Senior RKC Instructor.
He is STRONG as hell…which can be Very dangerous, IF you piss him off.
His training tool of choice? The Russian Kettlebell.
Watch what he does when steel passes through his hands….and, watch what scared the living daylights out of me!
Stay tuned for more killer Kettlebell training videos.
Drop a comment and let me know what you thought of that video!

I started lifting weights back when I was 13, it was 2 weeks before 8th grade was over. I used the weights my older bro had in his room down stairs on an old school Weider Bench.
Some of those weights were sand filled and I still remember doing dumbbell benching and sand would fall in my eyes and mouth – ahhhhhhhhh, those were the days
Through the last 2 decades, I have gone through many phases in my training. All of these phases were based on my goals, my intuition, experience, injuries, motivation, joy and most importantly, how my family inspired me and in a manner I was drawn to.
Some may not understand what I mean by being “drawn to the weights” but it is very similar to the manner a surfer is drawn to the water, no matter what shape or form it has. Surfers such as this are considered Watermen or Soul Surfers.

Bruddahs like Laird Hamilton, Uncle Mike Stehle and Kurt Gregory are ALL Watermen.
They also ALL train with that Underground Style – No Rules, training as they see fit, sometimes with barbells, kettlebells and bodyweight, other times outdoors at playgrounds, in backyards, on the beach and in the water.
It is about whatever is drawn to you and whatever you are drawn to, they both go hand in hand.
I guess we can be considered “Soul Lifters” and “Iron Men” – we love to train, regardless of the tool, where, what, when or the shape or form, we just love to train.
Of course, the more natural the setting and the tool, the more connected we are to this style of training.
Laird Hamilton surfs with any tool available and doesn’t discriminate much and even uses “machines” to extend his surfing to the next level, very much like powerlifters wear suits to lift bigger weights.
His surfing and life are guided by his family, his connection to nature, peace, adventure and his roots, which is water, as my roots are training.
I think if we stopped focusing so much on simply the physical benefits of training and more of what it can do for our soul, we would have a lot more people getting way better results in the physical realm.
If you’re not a Soul Lifter, if you’re not an Iron Man, then you’re missing out on some of the most beautiful things “training” can offer.
Think about that for a bit….
So let me ask you, are YOU a “Soul Lifter”?
Drop a comment below and let me know.
Peace Bruddahs!

Next Tuesday, Joe DeFranco and I will be releasing our last Lost Secrets of Strength Seminar on DVD, along with a KILLER Bonus Audio on CD – the entire seminar reveals our most effective training and business strategies.
People flew in from around the world to attend and invested a lot of dinero and time with all their travels and time included. To protect and respect those who busted their ass to make it happen, Joe and I will release 50 copies each, and we are unsure if we will re-release this seminar on DVD – CD.
Check out Joe DeFranco on video below, revealing his top methods regarding program design and athlete training. Drop a comment after you watch this bad boy.
Joe was the first Coach I invested in for coaching. Ironically, about 5 years later we’re working together. But I understood something VERY, VERY important: To become the best you must learn from the best. I knew that I wanted to be where Joe was and do what Joe was doing.
You MUST invest in your education if you want to be the best.
This is why I have invested heavily in learning from guys like Joe DeFranco and Alwyn Cosgrove.
The learning never ends, which is why I continue to make BIG strides in my business and my training.
Soon, you will have the chance as well. Next Tuesday, The Lost Secrets of Strength will be released – as always, Go Getters and Action Takers will rise to the top.
Drop a comment with your thoughts, comments and questions.
Peace!

Everything is just a tool. The barbell will always be the King of the weight room, but man do I LOVE heavy dumbbell work.
Heavy sandbag training is awesome as well.
Explosive bodyweight drills can’t be denied either.
Check out one of our athletes, CJ Hart, 16 years young, a Football Player and Wrestler.
Box Squat 385 x 2 (barefoot)
130 lb Sandbag Clean & Press x 6 easy reps
Pull Ups on Steel Beam for the added grip strength challenge
I have mentioned many times before about those early garage gym workouts where all I owned was a gun rack, 300 lb olympic set and a set of 50 and 100 lb dumbbells.
I packed on muscle and strength like never before.
You will too. Soon I’ll show you how
Tell me about your workouts using different tools.
What’s your favorite training tool and why?

Wow, while going to drop my car for some routine service I was struck by the presence of the East Jersey State Prison, aka Rahway Prison….it’s actually not even in Rahway, it’s in a small town called Avenel, NOT a pretty area.
You’ll see my experience in prison linked below, it was some freaky shit!
Now, check out why atmosphere, killer tunes and killer training partners help you tear it up!
We actually just had a few future USC Coaches stop by the gym Friday. They already payed for the April 25 & 26 USC certification so I invited them down to get a head start on their training and coaching. Wait till you see the video, because their legs were locking up on them and they could barely walk!
Looking forward to your comments and / or questions, go ahead and post em’ below!
