5 Training & Coaching Lessons (How Things Have Changed Since 2010)
5 Training / Coaching Lessons that have evolved for me since 2010. When they say "Kids haven't changed, adults have changed......" Well, that's NOT the whole truth. Everyone has changed. Technology has changed people. And the BIG change is this: Regardless of age, technology has removed a LOT of the work involved. Everything is easier to gain access to. But, the beautiful thing is this: RESULTS still and always will require intelligent, hard, consistent effort. With … [Read more...]
Program Design for Athletes: Are You Training for Sports or Powerlifting?
Last Friday an athlete I train pulled 500 on the trap bar. He is a 15 yr old high school Football player & LAX player. He was fired up that day and he said he wanted to go for it. On days when someone is ready emotionally AND physically to go hard, you Go for it. As long as the timing is right and safe, you go for it. In this Video I explain some context behind why I program the way I do for MOST athletes. Again, it depends on many factors and I never paint a broad brush, because times … [Read more...]
5 x 5 Strength Training QnA
Where did the 5 x 5 program originate from? Well, it's been around for DECADES. To my knowledge, Reg Park started the 5 x 5 program. As 1 of the strongest bodybuilders ever, and, a man who could bench 500 lbs, I actually NEVER recall reading about 5 x 5 in my teen years. And I read EVERY bodybuilding magazine and a TON of bodybuilding books. I WISH I came across this program in my high school years. I was too busy doing pump up bull shyt. Although I DO recall a kid I used to lift with … [Read more...]
3 Reasons Why Leg Training Builds the BEAST
I was in my early teens and training at my first "Hardcore Gym". This gym was 7,500 sq ft. NO AC, just a bunch of stand up industrial fans. ALL the plates were deep dish Ivanko plates and there was rumbling throughout the entire gym, blended with some old rock cassette tapes that blasted through the gym. Usually AC/DC or Metallica, sometimes Def Leppard. The back 1/3 of the gym was lined up with leg equipment. Plenty of squat racks, 2 leg presses, 2 hack squats, 2 leg extensions, 2 leg … [Read more...]

Are You NOT Ready for Barbell Lifts? When to NOT Squat, Bench & Deadlift?
I was chatting with a friend over the weekend over dinner and I train his son for the past 2 years. He told me how another Dad was worried about training at The Underground Strength Gym because his son was 14 and he was afraid he would squat, deadlift, bench, etc. First off - These 3 exercises are NOT bad. Context matters here. Let me explain why...... … [Read more...]
Trap Bar Deadlift vs Conventional & Sumo Deadlift
There is no need for controversy in the Deadlift. ALL Deadlifts are awesome and beneficial for athletes, it all depends on when and where that specific deadlift variation is being utilized. I am not married to any exercise when it comes to training athletes and those who are, well, they are ultimately doing their athletes a disservice. You see, every athlete is different. Some respond better to certain exercises than others. Some of that response might be favored psychologically not just … [Read more...]
