The Value of Calisthenics for Athletes & Men – Training for Performance and Strength

by Zach Even - Esh 2 Comments

Training for Performance – The Value of Calisthenics. Let’s dig into performance. Performance for sports and performance for life and work. Bodyweight training is a big component to improve your strength and muscular endurance for sports. In high school we see varsity athletes, both boys and girls who can NOT perform 1 proper push up. This is dangerous. The weaker an athlete is, the more likely he / she is to get injured. Weakness is a liability. … [Read more...]

Strength Coach Tips: Training Youth Athletes VS High School Athletes

by Zach Even - Esh Leave a Comment

I must admit, it breaks my heart when I see a “strength coach“ having a 12-year-old kid maxing out on the deadlift or maxing out on the back squat. I'm seeing kids who weigh under 100 lbs performing round back deadlifts, crashing onto a bench for a "box squat", benching while hip thrusting the heavens. This kind of dangerous training gives us ALL a bad name. Parents do NOT know the difference between the Coach who is training a young kid in the same manner of an adult powerlifter. In … [Read more...]

5 Reasons Why High Schools Need Expert Strength & Conditioning Coaches

by Zach Even - Esh Leave a Comment

I've been fighting this fight for a LONG time. I always say, The Kids are #1. Yet, when it comes to what happens in the weight room, I do NOT see this. I see administrators turning a blind eye to what happens in high school weight rooms, even though we've seen / heard on the news SERIOUS injuries (even death) occur due to unsafe training methods. - Do high school kids NEED "Navy SEAL Training"? - Do high school kids NEED to test their 1RM in the squat, bench and power clean? Here are … [Read more...]

5 Summer Football Workout Tips & Avoid These 2 Mistakes At All Costs

by Zach Even - Esh 10 Comments

I've been stepping up and voicing my opinion on the overbearing, ego-maniac parents and coaches out there who are hurting their kids with shitty training programs and overall shitty decisions pertaining to training and ultimately, life. Why is it acceptable to let anyone and their Mom run the high school weight room? I thought this was about the kids? I understand sport coaches don't like this, so they threaten their players and disallow any of them to train at The Underground Strength … [Read more...]

Underground Strength Gym High School Pull Up Contest

by Zach Even - Esh 15 Comments

A few of the high school bruddahs needed a lil' extra motivation so i decided to crank an unannounced pull up contest to win our latest Underground T Shirts. You'll see they ALL hit double digits. What's more important is that not long ago, some of these kids were only performing 3 pull ups with less than stellar technique. One of these athletes was not able to perform ONE pull up! Remember Kids: Eat Your Pull Ups for Breakfast! Check the vid and drop a comment, show some luv! I do pull … [Read more...]
