Why are athletes, especially young athletes consistently hurt and injured? I've seen some shocking injuries and an alarming number of injuries. Lots of "rolled ankles", "I hurt my back" and then some serious injuries that require surgery. I think back to the 80s. I don't recall anyone rolling an ankle. In sports, I want to make it clear that there is NO way we can ever eliminate injuries, but through intelligent training and intelligent application of sports, we can greatly reduce … [Read more...]

5 Training / Coaching Lessons that have evolved for me since 2010. When they say "Kids haven't changed, adults have changed......" Well, that's NOT the whole truth. Everyone has changed. Technology has changed people. And the BIG change is this: Regardless of age, technology has removed a LOT of the work involved. Everything is easier to gain access to. But, the beautiful thing is this: RESULTS still and always will require intelligent, hard, consistent effort. With … [Read more...]

Hatfield Squats + Lower Body Workout Explained
It's been a while since I've done the Hatfield Squat. These were popularized by Dr. Fred Hatfield aka Dr. Squat. The safety bar on the other hand was originally created by Jesse Hoagland of Trenton, NJ. Hence, it was originally called The Hoagland Bar. Fred Hatfield used this bar and popularized it. In turn, it started getting known as "The Hatfield Bar" or "The Safety Squat Bar". The photo below is one of the original bars which I believe was built in the early 80s, possibly 1982. I … [Read more...]
Strength & Conditioning / Athletic Development for Middle School & Youth Athletes
Every week I get questions from Coaches and Parents asking for guidance on training their son, daughter, nephew, etc who is in middle school. Often times, these kids are in 6th grade and around age 11. If you're training kids before middle school, I believe the best guy to learn from is Jeremy Frisch. We did a podcast together HERE so make sure you listen and see some of his Videos below. … [Read more...]

PSA: Time to Build TOUGHER Athletes Again
I was training with my old buddy and training partner last week and we started ranting about how much things have changed. The world is changing and if you can't see it then you're lining yourself up to be in trouble. Watch this Video as I share what needs to happen in this world..... … [Read more...]
Special Strength Training for Wrestlers – The KEY to Building Dominant Wrestlers
Many THINK they know what wrestlers need when it comes to "strength & conditioning" but I assure you, it is more than strength and more than conditioning. I still see training that is actually too "perfect" for wrestlers. I still see training that is too boring and common for wrestlers. Wrestlers are often "crazy" and eccentric, especially at the higher levels. So, as they get more advanced in wrestling, the training must challenge them mentally and physically. I've been around … [Read more...]
Strength Training in Your 40s: MAN STRENGTH
As we "get older", there comes a point in time where you must ensure that you are capable. The excuses of age, time and anything else are really all just BS. At the time of this writing I am creeping up on age 46. I don't chase the 1RM anymore but I still lift heavy with the basics. I make sure my heart is pumping with sleds and hill sprints. Some of you have airdyne bikes and rowers, this is excellent. Bodyweight Training is a must. You should always be able to squat, lunge, pull … [Read more...]
