Kick Ass Life

Above, former Edison, NJ homeboy, Mike Vallely – must be something in the Edison Water!

As soon as I moved to Edison, NJ, I built some tight friends in my neighborhood, now we’re more like brothers. That was 1980, some 31 years ago! We fell in love with BMX and Freestyle and we lived for getting up early on our bikes and meeting up to tear up the streets and BMX tracks all through the day and night.

We read the BMX magazines, bought the BMX & freestyle VHS tapes and even attended the pro competitions to be inspired. If it was raining we still rode, snow never stopped us either.

I have MANY vivid memories, such as getting my first new bike stolen in front of my face at the age of 9. I poured every weekend allowance and every dollar I made from my paper routes into that bike, a chrome and blue Schwinn Predator! A crew of high school kids rolled up and tore the bike away during a Football game. I’ll never forget that moment and how it felt to be weak AND helpless.

schwinn predator

Before I bought my Predator, I would jog to the Ford’s bike shop every weekend and SIT on the bike, grip the handle bars and pretend it was mine. I put the bike on lay away and deposited money every weekend after collecting from my paper routes. I can only imagine what the owner thought of me. Every weekend got me closer to making enough money from my paper route to pay that bike off in full!

I now guard my bike with a deep rooted attachment that brings me back to the days of having my bike stolen. If anyone tried to steal it again, I would probably bring them close to death and have no remorse about it. It ain’t easy to let go of a few select things in life, my bike memories are certainly ONE of those things.

I was also an avid skateboarder. Not as die hard as my bike though, I felt FREE on my bike, able to travel anywhere I wanted with NO boundaries. Through backyards, trails, streets, down flights of stairs…..My skateboard was able to travel with me on family vacations, which kept me sane if I was bored.

If we were at the beach my parents would always take me to a surf and skate shop where I could buy some mike mcgill skull snakecool skate shirts and check the surfboards, which I always dreamed of doing. My first shirt was a Mike McGill shirt from Powell & Peralta. I owned that bad boy through college, that shirt was to tough to let go of :)

Then, early in 8th grade it seems like the passion for BMX, Freestyle and skateboarding disappeared somewhere, somehow. Bikes became less and less about self expression and more about a mode of travel. My skateboard collected dust in the garage.

Not sure what spurred on this removal but man, the itch came back and even when no one else was out there on a bike or board I would here and there take my Dyno out for a ride.

Enter my early 20s and I picked up my first ever Mountain Bike and began riding with friends at Cheesequake State Park.

Life got busier and there went my bike riding days.

It angered me as I looked back, time was lost and time is the ONLY thing you can’t get back. Lose money, no sweat, you can earn it back. Lose time or waste time, it’s gone…. forever.

I decided those days of passion were not to be lost ever again. I began bike riding again, I now have 3 different skateboards, 2 mountain bikes and 2 surf boards which I will learn to ride.

Just because you get older doesn’t mean you need to let go of childhood dreams and passion. I ALWAYS have immense respect for the coaches who attend my USC Cert AFTER being in a career for 20 years or more and STILL want to get after their passion of being a Strength Coach. They don’t need the money, they just wanna do what they love.

It sounds cliche to tell you that it doesn’t matter what anyone thinks about you but it’s the truth. At least it’s the truth in my world.

I do what feels right for me and my family, same goes for my business. Integrity is # 1. If you give me a headache or don’t meet my standards I cut you loose. Every day is about doing what I love with those most important to me and my family and friends.

I don’t follow the proper or most perfect business methods nor do I care to. I am happiest when I take care of my fans and clients knowing I am giving the best I got to make them happy and make their lives better.

I don’t feel comfortable amongst the norm in this industry and sometimes (actually often times) this “industry” seems like a bunch of con artists and bull shitters. The far and few left with integrity and quality info earn my respect, the back stabbers and bull shitters have been crossed from my list.

Passion. Time & Integrity.

With my love for the action sports and being outdoors I had dreams of living in California. I took a 2 week trip to Cali in my early 20s. I was CLOSE to having my parents send socks and underwear and starting over. I had an amazing job in NJ and LOVED it.

I thought I would NEVER be fully happy living in NJ, I felt Cali was IT.

Years and years later my wife took me to the Manasquan Beaches and town. I LOVED it. I saw kids AND adults riding beach cruiser bikes and skateboards, surf boards were on top of countless cars and the town was chill and non pretentious.

After every beach trip I would drive around and check the homes for sale. We put our home in Edison for sale in the down market when the recession was hitting us hardest, it was TIME to stop losing TIME and focus on passion and doing what would be best for the family.

We made it happen during a time of imperfection and uncertainty.

I don’t wanna ever look back and wish I did this or that. Instead, I just do it, I’m suggesting the same for you but then again, it’s your life, not mine :)

Now my kids can grow up in a place where it’s OK to be a kid no matter what your age, where the air is clean and the people have manners. I can look back on all my mistakes and know I did at least ONE right thing in my life.

Question for YOU: What passion have you let go of that you plan to reignite? Perhaps it’s not a hobby, perhaps it was a friend or someone you loved. Drop a comment, let’s see some action HERE. I’d love to see 100 comments, yep, 100 comments.

Peace

Not EVERY post on this Blog will be about lifting. I don’t think lifting is the end all be all, perhaps you’ve heard me use the phrase, ‘Kick Ass in Life AND Lifting’? If not, read the book HERE!

Here’s a bit of my day and how things are rolling for me lately…

I’ve had a slam packed day and normally I do more work, but today was different. Many ask me how I get so much done and still have so much passion and energy on top of such a hectic schedule.

Well, # 1, I focus on my passion, and that is my family, living life to the fullest and moving my body in any way, shape or form.

shut nyc z, jonny & gavin

My alarm was set for 5:30 AM but I woke at 6:30 instead. I went to bed after midnight so I wanted to get 6 hrs of sleep. Most days I am up before 6 AM, especially when the weather is nice out.

I like to get up early, not just because it’s quiet and allows me to get work done, but because I know many others do NOT wake early and I LIKE doing what others won’t do.

I like to be different and ahead of the pack. Being a conformist or part of the pack always made me feel out of place, ironically.

Fired up my only cup of coffee for the day and then I cranked a bit of work on the internets before my wife and kids woke up, then I make breakfast for the family.

Egg omelets, french toast, chocolate chip pancakes… you name it, I make it. Today was pancakes and egg omelets.

Then, it was off to tennis in the AM with my daughter and my son came to watch and run around like a wild boy does :) Afterwards, my son demanded a trip to the bagel deli, so we went! ha ha

The kid is GROWING, what can I say!

After brunch with Ethan, I did a lil’ work on the internets and then got some new wheels on my skateboard.

mike vallely elephantI’m doing LOTS of stuff that I used to do as a  kid and living by the beach is bringing me back to those good ol’ days of playing all day and night.

I drove 45 minutes north and spent time chatting with my homeboy, Jonny Hinds, inventor of The Power Wheel.

We spoke about a TON of stuff, as we always do:

- bodyweight training (we ALWAYS get fired up talking training)

- life

- business

- skate boarding

- NYC & life in the city of Chicago

- jiu jitsu training now vs BJJ in the past

- the importance of recovery

- Rickson Gracie

- The Bartendaz

….and planned a mini hang out for a few days now that I fly :)

We always end up chatting about our passions and bodyweight training always brings inspiration, so, check out some of the guys we we were talking about who inspired the heck out of us!!

I got up north and shopped for the final prizes for the http://LiftSTRONG2011.com benefit. From there, it was time for Toys R Us.

Then, I shopped for birthday gifts for Ethan, he turns 3 this Sunday! I am psyched and wanted to get him tons of awesome gifts. The reactions he has when opening presents and tearing off wrapping paper is priceless!!!

I also bought my daughter a gift, I can’t let her watch Ethan unwrap gifts without her getting a gift as well :)

I finished shopping and flew over to open The Underground and trained athletes from 4 – 6 pm. We tore it up with bodyweight, dumbbells and strongman training.

After 6 pm crew was done training, off I went, food shopping for Lift STRONG.

tire flip Wags

I bought 8 hamburgers and 50 hot dogs amongst other things. These Dudes better be
HUNGRY! I dropped the food off at my parents pad since they still live up north near my gym.

I had a nice home cooked meal from my Mom, chicken and brown rice, then drove home to crank some final work. I coulda called it a day but shit needs to get done and most peeps would quit, I ain’t most peeps.

I went through a lot of blog comments and answered them and was really humbled by all the kind words people are saying on the blog.

Is every day this hectic?

Heck NO.

My days are usually very carefully planned, by the hour, broken down. Organized and committed to getting things done! Today was a wild day and I also need them here and again to get away from work, work, work.

After 2 days of heavy lifting, this was a rest day. A well deserved rest day! Train hard = Rest Hard!

I got time to spend with my kids and that really matters most to me.  Time to hit the bed and get ready for a strong day tomorrow.

Question for YOU: What else do you want to see from me on my blog? Do you want me creating a specific product, training or non training? Please describe in the comments section, thanks!

Peace

My training, as I’ve stated so often before, comes from my heart & soul. I let my emotions & energy levels dictate what the workout will look and feel like.

But….. this is NOT how I program workouts for others or for my athletes…. I’m talking about how I train myself. Most of the time I simply go by feel, expressing how I feel through strength.

This is another SOUL Lifter workout. It begins with a set of max pull ups and then onto ladder drills of the Kettlebell Snatch, inspired by Pavel.

My self expression doesn’t always come from lifting, but, it almost always comes through movement. That might be skateboarding, mountain biking, running….

Question for YOU: How do your express yourself?

In Strength,

PS: I am getting more and MORE fired up as the USC Cert draws closer to Underground HQ. Sign up HERE for a life changing weekend, and NO, you don’t have to be a trainer or coach, you might simply be looking to experience a time and place to help you grow as a person.

No matter who you are or what you do, this weekend will change your life. Psyched to see you!

Just wanted to give you a quick update on the killa shizza that’s been getting dropped at The Underground Inner Circle. Or, skip reading this and crank a 30 day trial for one buck, click HERE to get busy.

- New Underground Movie of our athletes prepping for our Lift STRONG Fundraiser, training for wrestling, football and more. You’ll see how we combine plyometrics, jumps and powerlifting to ensure we are not only getting strong, but explosive AND athletic. You’ll also see how we use what I call “off set loading” to develop some SERIOUS strength, power and stabilty for athletics.

- Russian Wrestling Camp video footage 15 minutes in length showing uncut footage of how Russian Wrestlers train to become the longest standing dominant force in international wrestling. This video is what “sport specific training” is truly all about. Even if you don’t wrestle, this video will blow your mind regarding how we should ALL be training to develop animal type strength, speed, power & athleticism. This video itself is worth the membership investment alone.

- New Underground Strength Coaches added to our Expert Panel. Yep, we’ve added THREE new Coaches, ALL of whom have gone through The USC Certification, own their own warehouse gym and walk the talk. Ask these guys anything about training, nutrition and business. The forum is available 24-7 for you to take advantage of while connecting with like minded Undergrounders. NO egos or Assholes! BOOM!

- Underground Workout of the Month. As always, I break down the workout of the month for you via video and telling you exactly why and how we apply what we do at The Underground. You can take this workout and use it for yourself or your athletes. Program design is the magic, it’s where everything gets put together and allows you to get the maximum result from just the right amount of training. Optimal training is the focus rather than maximal training which often leads to injury and burn out.

There’s a TON more, every month, including regular forum posts with QnA, detailed workouts from my gym as well as other warehouse gyms, garages, basements and backyards around the world. Undergrounders around the world, sharing how they go and tear it up.

Click HERE for a 30 day test run for only one buck. BOOM!

kurt gregory strongman training

Meet Kurty G, a tri athlete, who deadlifts 455 on a straight bar, weighs 196 lbs, runs 1/2 marathons, competes in triathlons and coaches at The Underground.

Oh yea, he’s also competing in 2 weeks at our 4th annual Lift STRONG Fundraiser, you coming?

You should come and compete, or, come and watch, help support the cause, doing something that helps make a difference. I’d LOVE to see you there.

This training might seem odd, especially for an endurance athlete.

“They” said endurance athletes can’t train like this, and, so did many of the original “Guru” Strength Coaches. BooHoo

This style of training develops greater strength, speed, power, recovery ability and mental toughness, ALL of which are critical for endurance athletes.

Nobody’s gonna stop us….. Undergrounders REPRESENT!

Recap of Kurty’s day.

- 5 Mile Run in the morning

- 20 minute swim after the run

- burpees in girlfriend’s backyard

- Strongman workout at The Underground to prep for Lift STRONG

- Flag Football Game at night

He didn’t even look tired!

Looks like we’ve ALL got some workin’ to do.

Get busy with the right type of training, click HERE, weak minded cry babies click AWAY.

Peace!

sig klein kettlebells

Soul lifting.

Here we go, 2nd workout of the day. First workout involved dumbbell quick lifts, bodyweight training and plenty of soft tissue work and mobility. Sweatin’ was easy since it was almost 100 degrees.

Want a second workout but the experts cry a river and say, “NOOOOO!!!! Rest!!”

I do what I feel and I feel what I do. My advice to you… Know Thy Self. Live for the iron and Live to train. Harley Davidson would dig us, NO doubt.

I’ve been using LOTS of ladders lately with both Kettlebells & Bodyweight. I’m feeling AWESOME on these. Although my shoulder is a bit bothersome, things are on the mend and I am WAY better than the last few weeks.

I’m also back to running thanks to this course, mountain biking and of course, it’s time to hit the beach and soon enough the water will be warm enough to hop in and learn to surf!

Time to get this day rollin’. I’ll leave you with a few words and thoughts.

- To know thy self you must ALWAYS search deeper.

- Train often and train with variety, expose your weakness both physically and mentally.

- Get comfortable being UNcomfortable.

- You can train anywhere, any time, any place. Don’t discriminate against training – use the many effective methods and dig deep, you will find yourself and eventually, you just might “Know Thy Self.”

Peace.

PS: I’m unleashing 7 BadAss gifts HERE. It’s not like everything and everyone else. I unleash everything on the “other side”. Click HERE to dig in. Enjoy.

The question was asked: “What does it mean to be a “Strong Man”?

I took a shot at the question, just like training, we are ALL flawed, there is NO perfect, but ya gotta try to do do your best, plain and simple.

If you’ve got tips to add, drop a comment.

Looking forward to reading your thoughts!

dezso ban powerlifting

This scenario might anger many, but, it may also be a stone throw away from happening to you. Check out this e mail and see my thoughts below:

Zach,

Just wanted to send you an email to let you know how much I appreciate how many bodyweight resources you are giving us. We’ve spoken via email before, but to reiterate, I played 4 years of college football at a small D3 school in Chicago.

During my time there I developed chronic neck injuries that left me with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Luckily it’s not bad enough to inhibit any of my daily activities, and I am currently employed as a police officer.

The only symptoms I have left are stiffness in my neck, occasional numbness and tingling in my left arm, and weird spasming of my left pec for days after I bench press with a barbell (though oddly enough, not dumbells).

However, I noticed that loading my spine seemed to worsen the condition. Which means that, at least for the time being, my beloved deep barbell squats are out of the question. :-( For a time I was somewhat lost, with my knowledge of bodyweight exercises being limited to pushups (which I was doing with improper form), pull ups, and bodyweight squats.
