What a day..... What a night..... I left the house at 2:30 PM to drive to Philly to meet up with John Welbourn & Tex from Power Athlete HQ. The original plan was for the guys to finish their seminar at 4 PM but like any passionate coach, you can't stop the freight train of passion when you're on a roll. I believe things came to a close around 5:15 PM. From there, we headed to U Penn to meet up with Jim Steel, the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach. I had spoken with Jim many times … [Read more...]

5 Garage Gym Workouts For Strength, Size & Mental Toughness
I began training in my garage during my 5th year as a teacher. It was the Fall of 2002. Time was of the essence as I was balancing the following: A new teaching position at the Middle School Middle School Wrestling Coach BJJ Training Finishing my MA in Health Education Commuting 1 hour each way for Graduate School Adjunct Professor at Community College Training (Finding time to Train) I started my home gym equipment set up by picking up some odds and ends from … [Read more...]
Small Victories for Mental Toughness
"Just find an excuse to WIN." When I want to build my mental toughness a mere extra 1%, I don't view the big goal, I take it 1 small step at a time. If I'm running, just get to the next telephone pole.... If I'm hitting a set of 20 rep squats, just get to 8, then 10, then 12.... When I get to 20.... I do 1 more, a few more times. It all adds up and these small victories build upon themselves, building momentum and in turn, greater mental toughness. During a recent training session with 1 of … [Read more...]
Potential Is BS, Reality Is The TRUTH

I used to view the training and coaching we do at The Underground Strength Gym as the ultimate way to help athletes achieve their TRUE potential. Until I heard a Coach say this..... "I hate that word potential. It's such bull shit. The reality of what you DO is all that really counts. What you DO with your potential is the ultimate … [Read more...]

Why Bodybuilding Workouts Are GREAT For You
When I made the transition from my bodybuilding workouts I had a bad taste in my mouth. I was wrestling or competing / training in Grappling & BJJ and the 2 simply didn't blend. I was getting injured quite a lot and I wound up ditching a lot of bodybuilding work, mainly because I stopped training in a traditional gym environment and I was now training in my garage. No machines, no cables. Just free weights and odd objects. I began developing a different type of strength. Different than … [Read more...]
Why You Need To Get Punched In The Face
Sometimes you need a hardcore wake up call. A proverbial "punch in the face". Your coasting through life, your training is easy and you're not moving onward or upward, just standing still. The ultimate way to stress yourself out is to stand still. I learned this from Dan Sullivan of Strategic Coach (Give credit where credit is due). Training athletes day in and day out and trying to work with sport coaches I learn that no one wants to get out of their comfort zone. Excuses run rampant and … [Read more...]
