Yesterday I made the one hour trek up north to my homeboy Joe D’s gym, and og what a gym it is,I’m in heaven there
It was our 2nd year competing in Joe D’s strongman contest, and this year we brought 1 high school athlete and 5 college athletes. Unfortunately, 2 were unable to attend due to injury and family vacation.
I had a wedding to attend yesterday and I was big time pressed for time, so, I also missed out on chowing down on more than a few burgers at The Goffle Grill, which I was really looking forward to doing while talking training with Joe D and his kick ass trainers, Johnny Imp and Jeff Carr.
Now, as you know, my passion is strength and success – they go hand in hand.
Being at Joe’s place is VERY motivating, and I am glad my athletes went up there with their A game!
You can’t help but be motivated when you see NFL athletes, top notch D 1 athletes and hungry high school kids gunning for the top.
Our top gun was Curls – now, as I have mentioned before, Curls is NOT some genetic freak as most would assume. The kid had not one inkling of athletic talent when he was younger. He was slow, weak and fatigues quickly. He was tagged first in all tag games.
But, when he began working out, he found his passion, and, he never strayed from following the recipe of success 100%.
He always worked hard and smart, he always ate big and clean. I did say ALWAYS, how many other athletes are out there crying about lack of progress yet they eat like a bird, lift like a bird, and skip workouts regularly. Come on, get with the program, half assin’ it won’t cut it.
Curls went out there and killed every event, and I do mean KILLED! He even had the best tire flip time, and that was when he flipped the tire UP hill, which really stacks the cards against you. Curls didn’t care, he was ready to rock the house and trained extra hard to do so.
Check out Curls, below, KILLING the log press event…
the gist of our program comes from two places:
The Underground Strength Kit and The Russian Lion Power Course
Now that Curls won the highly coveted DeFranco’s Strongman Contest I think he’ll be able to sleep better at night
The rest of Team Underground kicked some serious ass. Although none of them placed top 3, they out up some very impressive numbers in the sled sprint, the tire flip, farmer walk and the log clean and press.
The problem is, I FEAR my own athletes, ha ha, but then again, that is a good thing and it pushes me to keep getting stronger.
I gotta make sure that I represent as well.
Because if I don’t lead from the front, who the heck is gonna listen to me!?!
Kill it!

This morning I was drinking my morning shake, which I have 2 – 3 mornings out of the week, other days, I go with “real” food.
My wife asked me if I was going to work out today, I told her I would, after cranking out some computer work, I planned on hitting the backyard for some kettlebell training, and then she asked if the gym was open.
Indeed it was, but only for select few who were invited to train on Saturdays in preparation for Joe DeFranco’s strongman contest. Joe never invited outsiders into his competition except for our athletes, which was last year.
My wife encouraged me to meet up with the crew to train with them, little did she know what we were actually doing, and when I arrived today, I was ready for battle.
As the Coach, I am expected to lead from the front, I expect this from myself and my athletes expect this as well.
I know that my athletes have been trained in ways I wish I knew of, and now, many of them are stronger than me, bigger than me, leaner and meaner than me. Regardless, I will be ready for battle, with little sleep and no perfect anythings, it was “Go time.”
Our plans to train outside were quickly shuffled as the rain began to pour down with no let down in sight.
I quickly adapted and adjusted and set up our workout as such:
1) farmer walk dead lifts: 1 x 5, 1 x 3
2) 600 lb tire flip: x 3 reps (flip, run to other side, repeat, etc.)
3) log bar clean and press: 1 x 5, 1 x 30 seconds, 1 x 5 heaviest weight
4) double Kettlebell cleans w/88′s: 1 x 5 reps – my psyche shot me to 10 easy reps!
5) glute ham raise 1 x 12
6) 45 degree back XT w/60 lbs 1 x 12
I finished with some heavy arm work for biceps and triceps. Getting the guns stronger is more important than many people care to admit or understand.
Strong triceps will push up your log bar military press, the biceps endure a lot of strain when performing farmer walks and when wrestling with a tractor tire. All angles must be covered.
Heavy abdominal training will be included during the week.
Note the low number of sets. Less can be more, when less is enough. More is not always better. We aim to train with the minimal amount of volume giving the maximum return. Some thrive on more volume and they are given free reign to do so. Psychologically, some of these Gladiators need the extra volume.
This workout reminded me of the battles I encountered every workout when I was competing as a bodybuilder. My training partner was a wrestler, I was natural, he was not. Mentally, I refused to back down. I knew this would make up for my lack of physical advantages, and, although natural, my intensity would often times nauseate my training partner and others who trained with me.
As you can see, the mind will be your most powerful weapon.
Don’t ever lose your edge, engage yourself in activities that keep you leading from the front.
In Strength,
–Z–

This Saturday, our LIFT Strong fundraiser is going down.
The competition will be heated and anyone who doesn’t have the eye of the tiger is lunch meat for the rest, it’s that simple.
The training has been hard, but maybe not hard enough. You know I am ultra motivated after seeing DeFranco’s documentary and the recent video I published about “Living”.
There will be lots of spectators, remember, you’re also invited
The events will be: Read more on it’s going down!…

Wow, what a night Thursday was….
Sorry for the delay on this, I’ve been pretty wiped out
since Thursday night
Stay tuned though, because I will have some cool
trip footage of my times Thursday night to be posted here on the Blog
If you haven’t heard, last Spring and Summer a film crew was recording every second of action at Joe D’s place and it was churned out and whipped into an amazing documentary.
I’m tlaking about the stuff you’ve seen in Pumping Iron, except there is more training footage and more emotion behind this.
Yep, it’s a freakin’ classic already, I loved it.
It made me laugh, almost had me crying, gave me goosebumps and really hit home as to how big of a deal it is when we can touch and change people lives by the slightest bit from our information.

My Breakfast before the Storm:
4 whole eggs
4 egg shites
2 bananas
2 clementines
1 cup of coffee
I tend to alternate coffee and green tea through several week cycles. This is what my body is telling me and I go with it. I stray away from dairy products as much as possible except the eggs. I used to do the ol’ bodybuilder breakfast of 8 egg whites and one yolk, but after 7 or 8 years of the same thing, I decided to add more yolks to my breakfast and I feel stronger. And this did NOT have any adverse impact on cholesterol levels.
Throughout the day I’ll have several meals which are higher protein, lower carbs and I’ll also get one salad in somewhere during the day, as well as several pieces of fruit and TONS of water.
After breakfast I’ll be heading off to The Underground for a training session, a full body workout, much like what I prescribe in my Underground Strength Kit for my wrestlers.
The style of training I utilize with my combative athletes focuses on developing high levels of work capacity. Being strong is not good enough. Strength endurance, Power endurance and very high levels of stamina is what we develop through our workouts
What will you be doing on this fine Sunday?
In strength,
Zach
