Training for Performance – The Value of Calisthenics. Let’s dig into performance. Performance for sports and performance for life and work. Bodyweight training is a big component to improve your strength and muscular endurance for sports. In high school we see varsity athletes, both boys and girls who can NOT perform 1 proper push up. This is dangerous. The weaker an athlete is, the more likely he / she is to get injured. Weakness is a liability. … [Read more...]

7 Tips on Developing Superior Physical Conditioning + 19 Sample Underground Strength Workouts
I wrote about “Strong & Useless” in my Encyclopedia of Underground Strength & Conditioning. It’s when an athlete can move big weights on the barbell but can’t do basic bodyweight exercises such as lunges, pull ups, pushups, sprints, and jumps. I always say, Strong is Strong. This is why I don’t chase the 1 RM testing you see so often in high school weight rooms. The first athlete who demonstrated Strong & Useless to me held all the weight room records for his high school … [Read more...]

STRONG Life BONUS | Zach Gets Interviewed on The Hard Life Podcast
I had a GREAT time being interviewed on Doug Hershberger's Podcast, The Hard Life! We're in a world where the majority are busy making excuses, whining, complaining and blaming. People of ALL ages get offended by hard work. In fact, when you coach them through a tough workout, they perceive this as He doesn't like me. Or...... Don't you DARE tell an athlete that he cheated on the training. He will say, Everyone else did it. I have ZERO interest in being like "everyone … [Read more...]
Strength Coach Tips: Training Youth Athletes VS High School Athletes
I must admit, it breaks my heart when I see a “strength coach“ having a 12-year-old kid maxing out on the deadlift or maxing out on the back squat. I'm seeing kids who weigh under 100 lbs performing round back deadlifts, crashing onto a bench for a "box squat", benching while hip thrusting the heavens. This kind of dangerous training gives us ALL a bad name. Parents do NOT know the difference between the Coach who is training a young kid in the same manner of an adult powerlifter. In … [Read more...]
UNSTOPPABLE Mindset: In The Gym & In Life
It's awesome to see how strength training has exploded, very much thanks to the internet. On the flip side, I still struggle with being the most fired up guy in the room. At age 43, I should NOT have more fire than the 15 year olds. Those younger years are like bottling up the energy of a rocket ship, you can't let them go to waste, not for 1 day. The things I've seen on social media and heard about in globo gyms downright scares me. So in this article, I want to address attitude and … [Read more...]

This phrase has been misused and abused beyond recognition and it IS needed because kids are not outside playing. The local Basketball court in my town has been empty since I moved here 9 years ago. The Keto Diet Circa 1968
Recently I was gifted with yet another BIG box of old school magazines. Health & Strength, IronMan, Muscle Builder & Power..... These magazines are gold and it's amazing how I find information from 40-60 years ago that are sometimes brought forward today as if someone invented them. I honestly feel much of today's training is overly complex as is the nutrition. In turn, results are less even though information is more easily and readily available at the touch of a finger or via … [Read more...]
