You’re NEVER too old to learn new things. NEVER too old to become better. It’s OK to change.
Many people take pride in the fact that they will never change. Change means you’re evolving. If you evolve, you are growing from within and that is of utmost importance.
Without growth, You die.
I’m going to challenge you to do some things that you may not be doing….. perhaps you’ve NEVER done these “things”…. perhaps it’s been a long time ago…. I’ll ALWAYS be here to challenge you. I do the same to my athletes and I do the same to anyone I connect with on a coaching level, and by reading this blog, I see myself as your Coach.
Many think I’m too hard on them or too hard on others. Too harsh, tough and not forgiving enough. I simply see it as tough love and if I don’t tell you the truth I am cheating YOU and lying to myself. I lay the law down with my athletes and I truly see no other way.
These athletes MUST realize the opportunity they have and how the world CAN be their if they WANT it.
I tell the parents outright how pissed I am at them when they allow their child to quit a sports team because practice was too hard. I tell them how pissed I am when they allow their child to blame the coach for not starting. Whatever happened to responsibility? Why do we enable how soft people are getting…. America is SOFT. That is #TRUTH and it pisses me off.
Excuses SUCK and so do the people who use them…. got excuses?
YOU suck. Period.
Why are so many athletes quitting in sports…. quitting in life…. and why is it ALL allowed & accepted!?!?
A BIG reason I left teaching was because parents would blame teachers and attack teachers when their child wasn’t getting straight A’s.
I HATED how this “system” was contributing to The Pussification of America.
I refused to partake in the lies, excuses and bull shit so I left it ALL….. built my own world…. Underground Strength Nation.
Do I have excuses for things? Absolutely. I am NOT perfect but I RAGE against it when I allow Mr. Resistance to get the best of me and I fight back, tooth and nail, blood, sweat and tears.
When I catch those excuses I slap myself in the face and kick my own ass and do a complete 180. NO quitting, just brutal honesty with myself, you need to do the same for yourself if you want success.
When I saw 4 comments on THIS Kick Ass Blog I told Underground Strength Nation to check their pulse because that video was so f**ing inspiring that it fired me up how no one had words to evoke after such a video!
How are you NOT fired the HELL UP by intense videos!?!? Come on, Undergrounders…. Lead WITH me or get the Hell outta the way!!!
Some NEW things I am learning:
- Saying “sorry” more often and accepting my mistakes….
- Saying “I love you” more often to those who put up with my craziness and love me unconditionally. I am NOT an easy person to deal with and I imagine it’s tough being on the other side of the relationship with me….
- Nutrition consulting with my friend, Jason Ferruggia. My health has taken a priority like never before since late last winter after experiencing so much pain in my body due to abuse in training and average nutrition. I am pushing more and more for better nutrition and health from the inside out.
- Reaching out to people I’ve lost touch with through the years….
- Refocusing my business to the select few things that I can deliver best in. These areas of my business allow me to bring my best foot forward, giving you the best I’ve got makes YOU better. What makes YOU stronger makes US stronger. That is what Underground Strength Nation is ALL about.
Make NO mistake about it….. These changes have NOTHING to do with a new year or a resolution. They are driven by passion and what is important to my family and Underground Strength Nation. Period.
When I want something I F**King DO it, I don’t wait for dumb ass new year resolutions or any other shit like that. NOW is when I do everything I want. NOW…. not tomorrow or later, NOW.
I suggest you do the same. If you have demons, face them now. If you’ve been putting shit off, do it NOW. You MUST be honest with yourself, dig deep, look yourself in the mirror and look those you love in the eyes and tell them the TRUTH.
The world has enough liars, con-artists, bull shit artists, blame artists, excuse makers and enablers of the weak and lazy.
NOT in THIS House. Undergrounders are a RARE Breed. I know it and so do YOU.
Drop a comment and tell us how you’re going to change for the better. We’re an Army of Bad Mother F**kers, Be PROUD and stand TALL.

Training young athletes is my passion. I LOVE helping skinny, weak kids go from Boy to BEAST….. not just physically, but mentally as well.
But, I feel HORRIBLE for the athletes who are forced to train with a Coach who has NO clue as to WHAT the hell to do with regards to Safe AND Effective training. Some Coaches do NOT want to learn. They use their EGO to control the kids and force them into training in shitty conditions.
NOTE: For those who want to learn about training athletes, I HIGHLY recommend THIS Book.
These kids end up getting injured and perhaps even worst, they are unable to reach their true potential because they are NOT maximizing their ability to get stronger, more explosive and adding necessary muscle. I have PERSONALLY been there and done that, this is why you see me getting fired up when I get into the topic of training athletes.
I figured I would address a few tips for training high school athletes as I get these questions on a frequent basis. By no means is this a complete, exhaustive list, just a few tips……
1) Should an inexperienced high school lifter be doing power cleans, squats, benching & deads?
NO.
NOT even with a light weight, the coordination is simply NOT there….. yet. It takes TIME. Train for the long haul, not for today and tomorrow only.
Build up their coordination with VERY simple exercises that yield a fast return in strength and coordination. Movements such as push ups, pull ups, bodyweight squats & lunges, sled drags, light Kettlebell farmer walks, ab exercises, high handle trap bar deadlifts, grip exercises and tons of band pull aparts.
2) Should young athletes max out every month for 1 rep?
NO.
Instead of using only the 1 rep max as an indicator, why not see if they get stronger from month to month or week to week on specific movements, or as Dave Tate calls them, indiciators.
Once you begin testing 1 Rep Maxes with young athletes form goes out the window.
If you keep a training long or simply remember in your head what you did for Trap Bar Deads 3 weeks ago for 5 reps, see if you can get a lil’ stronger for your 3 – 5 rep set today. How many pull ups did you get last week or 2-3 weeks ago compared to today?
Every workout is an assessment and every week you are testing yourself to see if you’re stronger as a young athlete.
Strength is NOT always in number of reps or amount of weight. It could VERY well be a greater demonstration of body control or control over the weight.
For example, an athlete does 5 pull ups but his legs are swinging up on each rep and he squirms his way to the top. 2 weeks later he bangs out 5 TIGHT reps, abs and legs are rigid, upper body pulls in a straight line with NO wiggle room. THAT is a Legit increase in strength. The reps are the same, but each rep looks 20 x better, you dig?
Don’t forget, make these workouts FUN… not just the style of training, but the atmosphere AND environment must be FUN and Competitive…..
I was in a high school weight room when a Football team was testing their 1 rep max on squats. I could NOT believe what was going on in there and how anyone with half a brain couldn’t see from a mile away that this was some seriously dangerous stuff! The weights being used were waaaaaaay beyond their control and even the exercises selected were too advanced for these skinny kids.
NOTE: If you need to add a BIG Ass Pad to the bar when doing squats you need to get OFF the squat bar and focus on building your body up to handle a heavy bar across your back with OUT the BIG pad. Instead, build up your back, traps, legs, trunk / ab stability and entire body FIRST. EARN your way to the squat rack, that’s the bottom line!
This is also why I am NOT a fan of timed workouts.
I have found that NO matter how much you tell an athlete to stick to form and technique during a timed workout, the form goes to shit.
Shitty form = shitty results…. and soon enough, injury, especially if timed workouts are with added resistance.
Watch the video below, and even though only bodyweight training, watch how a timed workout alters the focus on technique and quality to a focus on racing others and achieving a better time.
As you can see….. even with repeated coaching and even threatening their life the form of these bodyweight exercises went OUT the window.
We deleted ALL times from this entire challenge at the gym & told the athletes that if technique is legit, NONE of it counts.
There are OTHER occasions where time can be implemented safely and effectively.
Here are a few of those times where we’ve experienced success doing so.
1) Running - You can’t half rep the runs! Race for 400 – 800 or 1600 meters! Race for 40 yd dash……
2) Underground Sandbag Challenge - The bag MUST touch the ground each and every rep and the bag must get ON top of your shoulder each and every rep.
3) Bench Press Your Bodyweight x Max Reps – Touch the chest every rep and lock out the arms every rep, leave 1 rep in tank for technique. This is cut and dry. The bar must touch the chest every rep, lock arms every rep.
As you can see, I am on the constant improvement of my training methods for my athletes.
On the flip side, adding competition to workouts fires these kids up, so you MUST find a way to incorporate competition within workouts but focus on technique. If technique wasn’t up to your standards (and you should push for HIGH standards) then it doesn’t count.
Should young athletes take their set to max effort or failure?
NO.
Even experienced lifters are learning more and more, optimal workouts WIN, NOT Maximal Workouts.
This Book is a PERFECT example.
Listen to Louie Simmons talking maximal training VS optimal training…. He encourages lifters to leave with energy in the tank. Athletes even more so should leave with energy in the tank because the reason behind their training regime is to improve their sports performance.
Check this freshman wrestler out, 14 years young. He started with us exactly 3 months ago, trains here 2 x week. He began weighing 105 lbs and got to 117 lbs, adding 1 lb a week for 12 weeks. He’ll wrestle at 113 lbs this season.
He attacks the basics:
- Kettlebell farmer walks
- Pull Ups / Push Ups / Handstand Push Ups
- Sleds
- Back Extensions / Swings
- 1 Arm DB Rows
- Dumbbell Benching
- Kettlebell / Dumbbell Clean & Press
- Trap Bar Deadlifts
As you can see, ATTACK the basics!
By the way…. beginner or NOT, you need to attack the basics for LIFE. The movements listed above are regulars in my workouts as well. Why? Because they are LEGIT for producing results. Period. End of Story. DO Them.
But… Here are a few CRITICAL elements of a training program for high school athletes in addition to performance improvement:
- Improve Mental Toughness
- Increase Self Confidence
- Teach Discipline / Commitment / Intensity / Passion
Remember, we want to train these young kids for LIFE both on AND off the competitive sports field. People nowadays are soft, always whining, crying, making excuses and overall, are mentally weak. F**K that, some of your workouts need to be hellish (once they are ready for them) so these athletes understand what it means to go through a battle and fight to come out on top.
QOD (Question of the Day): How did you train when you were a teenager? What do you WISH you knew back then that you know now?
Peace!

Soooo…. what REALLY goes down at The Underground Strength Gym? I am often asked….
I am a lucky guy, I won’t deny it.
I LOVE what I do and love it even more when I’m sweating bullets and my hands are covered in rust from old plates and dirt from 450 & 600 lb tractor tires.
As they say though, successful people make their own luck, but what is often forgotten is how they learned what they now know…..

My training, as I’ve stated so often before, comes from my heart & soul. I let my emotions & energy levels dictate what the workout will look and feel like.
But….. this is NOT how I program workouts for others or for my athletes…. I’m talking about how I train myself. Most of the time I simply go by feel, expressing how I feel through strength.
This is another SOUL Lifter workout. It begins with a set of max pull ups and then onto ladder drills of the Kettlebell Snatch, inspired by Pavel.
My self expression doesn’t always come from lifting, but, it almost always comes through movement. That might be skateboarding, mountain biking, running….
Question for YOU: How do your express yourself?
In Strength,

Wanna be explosive, athletic, agile, mobile and hostile?
Step 1: Get STRONG as Hell. Strength is your foundation, you hear this all the time, and I would say this is almost entirely true. I have seen lots of guys, strong as hell, but also have little speed. So what gives?
Power is a blend of strength and athleticism. It’s the OPTIMAL blend, because nothing is perfect and everything is flawed, you are trying to get the best balance possible. Only chasing greater strength will not help you reach your goals of speed / power.
I’ve seen guys who can bench 315, squat 405 and deadlift 495 yet they are sloooooow. Cab’t get fast if you’re always grinding away heavy loads, carrying excess body fat and dismissing the power of using bodyweight movements for explosive training.
Step 2: Train athletic movements. Jumping and running are the critical two that you want to use, in ALL their forms. We jump in MANY ways and I’ll detail them HERE.
Step 3: Obtain optimal lean body mass. Simply put, if you’re gonna eat like shit you’ll be a fat bastard….AND you’ll be slow. The stronger and more explosive you are in relation to your bodyweight, the more likely your body will move with speed and precision. This is why we often hear Coaches talking about training the nervous system, in their efforts to avoid adding excess muscle (adding body weight) which forces the body to work harder to move.
Instead they are trying to improve the body’s ability to fire the muscles while maintaining the same body weight or becoming lighter through burning fat / losing unnecessary pounds.
Final Note: If you’re weak and have NO muscle and NO strength, do NOT be a fad follower and think you can use plyometrics blindly and without a solid physical base as plyos are an advanced method of training. (most of which are confused with movements that are NOT plyometric in nature).
Get strong as hell first, when the technique is there, move the weight and / or your body as fast as possible to promote speed and power development, eventually, begin using jumps of various kids, throwing / releasing objects as well as sprints of various types.
Sure, this is a very general “heads up” on developing power, the full article will be up shortly at The Underground Inner Circle.
Peace

Above, is one of our high school wrestlers, Kyle Markovitch, pound for pound one of the strongest guys in our gym next to the infamous “Rosa”, shown below at 120 lbs throwing around 70 lb Kettlebells!
Right now, Kyle weighs just above 140 lbs, but he wrestled at 130 lbs this season and qualified for states, while winning the district and county title. He also plays Rugby, one of the most kick ass sports known to man kind!
At 135 lbs Kyle was benching 255 for 3 reps and can crank out convict conditioning exercises like a Bodyweight BEAST.
I actually gave Kyle a copy of Convict Conditioning as a gift, he has put it to good use and anyone who gets in his way knows what I’m talking about.
As you can see, what we do works.
We turn guys just like YOU into Bad MoFos.
But, you gotta be willing to take action.
Are you an action taker?
Food for thought.

PS: There’s over 1 hr of never seen before Underground Bodyweight Video footage awaiting you when you take action, as a FREE gift for simply test driving The Underground.
