The other day I gathered 1 of my groups at The Underground Strength Gym after their warm up. I asked them Who has goals here? Who knows what they are training for and what they want to achieve? There were a few who knew EXACTLY what their goals were. A few understood that they would need to step up their commitment level to actually achieve those goals. And a few honestly had to tell themselves (and me) that they have NO clue what they're training for. I replied to the athletes with NO … [Read more...]
You Gotta Have PASSION! I Don’t Care What “Experts” Say!
I've seen some books out there and "experts" telling you NOT to follow your passion. They say it's Not what is always "best for business". SOME people CAN live without pursuing passion. They are fired up about the $$$ in their bank account first & foremost. They don't give a hoot if their following their passion. I get that. I understand. BUT, I will NEVER understand the lack of passion when it comes to being a Coach for ANY sport. You MUST have passion. If you don't believe in what you … [Read more...]
Keep Waiting & You Will NEVER “Get There”!
I remember my earliest training partners..... They were a few local guys a bit older than me and they would complain about one another behind each others back. Excuses were running rampant...... They would complain that they only could train with me. They NEEDED my motivation, they told me. But now I know. I KNOW much, much better, some 25 years later. Excuses Suck. NO Excuse is truly valid. The only thing you NEED to do is to be able to count on YOU. Punch your excuses in the face. And … [Read more...]
QnA: Daily Calisthenics, When to “Cut” & Defining STRENGTH
Original Photo & Story HERE This was a QnA session BUT heavily prefaced by an explanation of "What It Takes", an expansion of the recent "What It Takes" Blog Post..... I suggest you read that blog post because until you understand "What It Takes" the knowledge you acquire means nothing & will amount to nothing. The BIG missing link that is always swept under the rug is the emphasis on hard work, smart work, dedication, consistency & intensity model of training. I love these … [Read more...]
Why The World Would Be Different If I Never Wrestled
I wonder if the world would be different in my eyes if I never wrestled? My older brother told me "It's the most awesome sport!" I was in 8th grade at the time and he was a sophomore in high school. Of course, I wish my parents knew this to get us all involved in wrestling much earlier. My older brother started wrestling his sophomore year in high school and I began my freshman year. My younger brother began in 1st grade. Before I rant, I want to preface this and say that NOT all wrestlers … [Read more...]
Why That Short Cut Is Killing Your Success
This Blog Post is gonna get intense. Why so intense? Because I don't accept or encourage mediocrity. Mediocrity sucks. I can't stand it. Even more so, I get pissed off how passionate people get reprimanded, lose their jobs, etc while mediocre people and even worst than mediocre people get jobs and get accepted into society. I would rather be hated and get fired from any job then to settle for mediocrity. Success requires intensity, dedication, passion, commitment, durability … [Read more...]

Photo above with info HERE via my Instagram This QnA STRONG Life Podcast [Episode 77] is jam packed with information from various training questions to business and life questions. Please Bear with the initial audio as these were recorded from live Periscope Videos so the first 2 minutes is me getting my butt kicked by technology and trying not to explode the internet. There are some slight audio skips in this episode so next time I will get back to straight audio recording. Regardless, … [Read more...]
Blending Calisthenics with Strongman, Powerlifting & Olympic Weightlifting
My buddy and I used to hunt the area for the best playgrounds. We looked for parallel bars and pull up bars specifically. These were gems. Some schools removed their entire playground if one child fell and got injured. So this was not as easy to find as it sounds. The back of my truck usually had a sandbag, a few Kettlebells and maybe a sled or prowler. Those training sessions were powerful and effective. They were TOUGH. Now, being in my 40s, I find that more calisthenics and … [Read more...]
5 Common Training / Program Design Mistakes of Athletes & Coaches
In my recent discussion on training mistakes and program design with Josh Bryant we spoke honestly and openly about our own mistakes and what we see in others that are also commonplace. If you're reading this article it means you want to learn and that is KEY. That obviously brings me to Mistake # 1: You can NEVER STOP learning. You must learn by doing the work yourself be it in training and / or coaching. Learn through books, podcasts, seminars and more. If you are out there … [Read more...]
Are You a Hyena, A Jackal Or a LION?
It's been a whirlwind few weeks. The type of adversity that doesn't give a shit how much weight I can squat or deadlift. Living a STRONG Life transcends the weight on the bar. The STRONG Life transcends what "everyone else" thinks about you or even what they THINK they know about you. THAT is why you must be strong. Because life is a test, every single day. Take pride in being STRONG. This starts from within. Resiliency, Durability..... The ability to rebound...... I have gotten good … [Read more...]
