These minimalist workouts bring back memories of my years of influence from men like Mike Mentzer and Dorian Yates. When I was 18 and had just won the Young Mr. Israel Bodybuilding Contest (18 years & under) I came home to America and trained very low volume but high intensity. I trained every other day and took 2 days off after leg day. I was extremely inspired by seeing the rugged photos of Mike Mentzer and Dorian Yates. Even though I was natural and still am, I felt that the high … [Read more...]

How to Get Stronger & Build Muscle in Your 40s
At the time of this writing, my body is on the mend since my knee surgery and blood clot last March, 2021. My knee is not 100% and as we get older, if you have had an injury or a surgery in the past, I believe it is safer to DOUBLE the length of "recovery time" to ensure you don't rush through the full healing process. So if the Doc says 6 months, I do not believe that in 6 months you have the green light to go ALL out. Instead, take months 6 - 12 to rebuild to greater heights. Use … [Read more...]
Strength & Conditioning Thoughts: “Perfect” Training vs DOING THE WORK
Above: The Dumbbells at Diamond Gym. To get to the heaviest weights, you must do all the work to get them from the bottom! In sports, you can be a Coach or even a fan watching practice or competition and there will be stand out athletes. If you don't know that athlete, then you have NO clue how that athlete achieved his or her skill. he may have worked his ass off for it or, he might be gifted and lazy. But in the weight room, ahhhhhh, that's a different story. You can stand against the wall … [Read more...]
31 Life & Lifting Lessons from 31 Years in the Iron Game
Good ol' June of 1989. That's when it all started for me. Squatting in my older brother's room on our chrome, spin collar barbell set. I opened Arnold's Encyclopedia and saw a photo demonstrating proper squat technique. And 31 years later, I've learned a lot, experienced a lot and seen a LOT. These lessons and experiences span beyond the gym and weight room. I wrote whatever came to my heart. Enjoy.... … [Read more...]
202 | Underground Strength History, Building Hammers & Balancing That Strength Coach Lifestyle
STRONG Life Podcast ep. 202! This was a GREAT QnA episode where I dug deep and answered your questions with some awesome stories and in depth info. Here's just some of the questions I answered: - How do you start the conversation with an in person or online client that you know is not compliant with your program? - Dating back to the original Underground Garage-give us an example of a “basic” (anything but!) workout you would put those kids through. Love that stuff man! Keep it up … [Read more...]
“I’m too tired to train…..”
I've been getting a lot of emails from guys who are exhausted from LIFE. Work, family, work more, life stuff happening. I KNOW the feeling. But sorry, fellas, we are MEN, we MUST be STRONG. I guarantee you that any woman reading this agrees, and, she is probably saying the same for her own expectations. If you haven't been training for a while, I want you to do these 4 exercises, 3 x week: … [Read more...]
Minimalist Training, Social Media Posts for Likes vs Impact & Training to be Dangerous
In this live Instagram I chat about the following: Minimalist Training, Social Media Posts for Likes vs Impact & Training to be Dangerous. With my current hectic schedule it reminded me of my mid 20s when I went on a 2x week training program while going through grad school (1 hr commute each way), teaching full time, coaching wrestling and not wanting to give up my membership at Diamond Gym which was a 30 minute drive each way. Below are the topics I discuss. Enjoy the show...... … [Read more...]
Thoughts on Squats, Life & Lifting
I had recently come across a video that inspired me to share my thoughts on squats, life and lifting. I've been saying for countless years how the iron is the best therapy for me. Is it the same for you? I don't know, but I am quite confident that if you're in need of a boost, there isn't a whole lot that feels more invigorating and powerful than experiencing an awesome training session. With my hectic schedule, I am getting in a few 5:30 AM training sessions each week. This is much better … [Read more...]
5 Tips: How to Use Bodybuilding / Strength Machines to Build Size AND Strength
When I first began training in my early teens, I trained quite wrong, unfortunately. I used both machines and free weights, but I didn't go heavy on either. I did TONS of volume and it halted my strength gains. I was brain washed :( I read all the wrong information and the far and few between guys who actually WERE strong in the gym, you simply assumed that bodybuilding and powerlifting were 2 different worlds. I was told to feel & squeeze the muscle, the weight doesn't … [Read more...]
Golden Era Strength & Muscle Building Lessons from Irvin “Zabo” Koszewski
Nothing fires me up more than looking through my old bodybuilding books and magazines. The magazines from the 50s through the 70s are my favorite. These magazines had information on powerlifting, weightlifting, bodybuilding, nutrition and lifestyle. The Golden Era of Bodybuilding was MORE than what we see in today's bodybuilding world. Irvin “Zabo” Koszewski was one of my favorite bodybuilders from the early days of The Golden Era so I wanted to make a video on how he inspired me, how he … [Read more...]
