It was June of 1989 when I began lifting weights in my brother's room. For a year, perhaps even 2 years, I was already intrigued with getting strong and building my body. I would read the bodybuilding books and magazines my brother had before I even began training. Unfortunately, those books were bodybuilding based. There were NO performance based training books available at the book stores. Unless I completely ignored them and only read what captured my attention. When I began coaching at a … [Read more...]

Old School Bodybuilding Book: Super High Intensity Bodybuilding, Ultimate Warrior & Old School Strength
It was the Winter of 1989....... I had asked my parents for a bunch of bodybuilding books that I had read multiple times already. How? I would sit on the floor at the B Dalton book store inside menlo park mall and read ALL of the books. But still, I was obsessed and had to have them all. Reading them a few times wasn't enough for me. The photos inside these books inspired me to train harder and get bigger. Little did I know or could I ever imagine that decades later, I would become … [Read more...]
Underground Strength Training from 1947 + the TOUGH Training of Mas Oyama
In the early 2000s when I began Underground Strength, it was truly "Underground". At the time, the "in thing" was training on one leg, on a bosu ball or physio ball. You had to use a medicine ball, rotating, half kneeling and doing what many today consider "circus tricks". That was when "functional training" became the buzz word along with the infamous "core training". Many of the "popular" Coaches laughed at me and made jokes. During an interview one day I remember saying, "I would put my … [Read more...]

5 x 5 Strength Training QnA
Where did the 5 x 5 program originate from? Well, it's been around for DECADES. To my knowledge, Reg Park started the 5 x 5 program. As 1 of the strongest bodybuilders ever, and, a man who could bench 500 lbs, I actually NEVER recall reading about 5 x 5 in my teen years. And I read EVERY bodybuilding magazine and a TON of bodybuilding books. I WISH I came across this program in my high school years. I was too busy doing pump up bull shyt. Although I DO recall a kid I used to lift with … [Read more...]
249: Steven Pressfield Interviews Zach on Writing, Creativity & The STRONG Life
STRONG Life Podcast ep. 249 is a wild ride for me. Steven Pressfield invited me on a zoom call to be interviewed for a off the cuff interview / conversation. That's right, Steven wanted to interview me. Holy hell! Yes, it's still surreal and it's a powerful reminder, you never know who is reading your stuff. Steve is an avid reader of my newsletter. It's a reminder that the GREATS all READ. And for those who tell me they're too busy to read or only want to consume information via Instagram … [Read more...]
247: Kurt Hester: Strength & Conditioning “Madman”
STRONG Life Podcast ep. 247 with Kurt Hester. WOW, what an awesome episode with Kurt who is in his late 50s (I always say he looks like he's 32) and crushing it as a Coach. I have a TON of respect for Kurt. He has been at the D1 level in the big schools, then went and opened his private facility for close to 20 years, then at almost 50 was hired at the D1 level and is building hammers. As a Coach, Kurt is improving every day and has had decades and decades of experience at both the … [Read more...]
Building Stronger, Tougher & Faster Athletes: Eventually, Athletes Need a Heavy Bar on their Back
Times have been changing for quite some time..... Strength training with the basics is just not "cool" anymore. "Experts" hate on squats and now we have high school kids who can barely squat bodyweight. And this COVID shutdown of gyms didn't help. When gyms were open, at least the kids were in there training. Now, parents are afraid to send kids to a gym and we have everyone locked down in a "safety bubble" You see, many athletes took it upon themselves to do NOTHING during the COVID … [Read more...]
